Continued From 4 allowing them to find their voices and “talk to us” through the mystical, hidden language of images and symbols. DISRUPTION consists of wide ranging depictions of differing natural frequencies of life. Whether it is an internal neurological pathway or a winding path through the forest, the patterns on the paper display the artist’s personal reflection of their own connection to our worlds and the pathway to creativity. While the artwork is beautiful to look at it is important to recognize the depth of emotional release, intellectual learning and work skills development that took place over months of work with all our dedicated staff. It was their patience and unerring commitment to “stay the course” and believe that our artists could reach high to not only “see their healing image”, but also commit it to permanent form for all to share in their vision. Much has been written about the healing power of Mindfulness Based Art Therapy and the creative process of spiritual selfexpression, especially for individuals who may find it difficult to express their thoughts and feelings through spoken words alone. The images on view are a testament to this healing power, as our artists faced the challenge to “break through” familiar modes of expression and embrace feelings of trust, hope and peace, offering them an alternative to chaos, conflict and fear. This project in creativity has helped fortify the groundwork for our artists’ successful, ongoing contributions to our community through employment, volunteerism and cultural enhancement for us all. All are encouraged to view the works and perhaps purchase a piece. The proceeds of sales go towards supporting the artist and his/her program.

The Heart of the Matter “I became a journalist to come as close as possible to the heart of the world.” ~ Henry Luce As I sit here at 4 p.m. on Friday afternoon composing my thoughts for this column, one can’t help but reflect upon the latest in a long line of tragic shootings to touch the nation, this time at the headquarters of the Capital Gazette, an Annapolis newspaper founded in 1727. Among the five fatalities were veteran editors, writers and reporters, as well as a sales assistant to the staff. To think that a random act of violence on an otherwise average day could at once shatter so many lives is quite jarring. Of course, we as a society have become all too accustomed to dealing with tragedies of this sort; places that were once deemed to be “safe” can no longer be guaranteed so. Schools, churches, movie theaters . . . the list goes on and on. Year after year, these senseless acts have invaded our

societal comfort zone, making it increasingly difficult to look the other way. There is simply no rhyme or reason to the madness and where it may strike next. Of course, being of the journalism profession and working in an office much like the one brought to its knees last Thursday, this particular incident resonates on a slightly deeper level. The sentiment expressed by one Gazette reporter in the immediate aftermath of the shooting, “I can tell you this: we are putting out a damned newspaper tomorrow,” is one that rings true for nearly every publication through history that has been faced with a measure of adversity. From storms and natural disasters to power outages, union strikes and the like, journalism is one of the few industries that seldom “stops the presses” for any reason. Just a few years ago, many local community newspapers were faced with the prospect of not publishing in the

wake of Hurricane Sandy, as the majority of Long Island remained without power in the days and weeks following. But ultimately, the need to forge ahead, to provide readers with a lifeline to their surroundings, prevailed. As promised, the Capital Gazette came out with its Friday edition, the headline “5 Shot Dead at the Capital” splashed across the front cover. Simple. And yet so far from simple. Within the paper were written articles covering the attack and photos of the victims. But perhaps most poignant was the page normally reserved for opinions and editorials, which was left blank. In the white space were the words: Today, we are speechless. This page is intentionally left blank to commemorate the victims of Thursday’s shooting at our ofﬁce. What followed were the names of the five employees who were killed, one to a line. At the end of the day, there is really not much more to say.

Coastal Steward Long Island With coastal breezes, tons of sunshine and world-class beaches, Long Island is a wonderful place for beach-lovers to reside. However, we must remember to take care of our shoreline and preserve the natural beauty that surrounds us.

Coastal Steward Long Island is a local non-profit that is dedicated to restoring and preserving Long Island’s coastline through education, community action and raising public awareness. They hope to foster a caring connection between Long Island residents and their shoreline to create future generations of coastal stewards.

As a non-profit that operates 100% by volunteers, Coastal Steward Long Island feels they can never have enough people to volunteer. If you would like to help keep our island home to some of the most beautiful and top-rated beaches in America, then consider volunteering with CSLI! They take volunteers to help with beach cleanups, planting oysters, collecting relevant data, maintaining tanks, releasing into the harbor and office work.

Sheriff Errol D. Toulon, Jr. announced recently that he has chosen Kevin T. Catalina as Suffolk County’s new Undersheriff. Catalina, who is presently the Deputy Chief and Commanding Officer of the New York City Police Department’s (NYPD) Intelligence Bureau, Operational and Analytical Section, will assume the position at the Sheriff’s Office on August 1st. Among his responsibilities will be the Sheriff’s Office’s Gang Intelligence Unit, and oversight of the Deputy Sheriffs and Training Academy. Sheriff Toulon performed an extensive search for his new Undersheriff, and chose Kevin Catalina based on his highly successful career at the NYPD and for his expertise in anti-gang violence strategies, gang suppression and counterterrorism operations. In announcing the appointment, Sheriff Toulon stated, “During my six months in Office, I was searching for the very best talent to help me lead the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office into the future, and we are very fortunate that Kevin has accepted the position of Undersheriff. He is a resident of Long Island and knows our communities well, but he also brings a high level of expertise from the NYPD that will help drive innovation and reduce crime in Suffolk County.” Throughout his 26year career at the NYPD, Kevin Catalina held a range of positions related to counterterrorist operations and investigations, logistical planning and site security. As the Commanding Officer of the NYPD Gang Division from

2014-2016, he developed and implemented all gang investigative and suppression strategies utilized throughout the City of New York. He is recognized as a subjectmatter expert in gang violence and crime reduction strategies, and pioneered an initiative in the South Bronx that resulted in a 40% reduction in shooting incidents. “I'm both honored and excited to be joining Sheriff

Toulon’s team. During a long career with the NYPD, I've seen firsthand the ways in which gangs and drugs can ravage a community. I'm looking forward to implementing some of the successful strategies we used in NYC to help make Suffolk County an even safer place to live,” stated Catalina. Undersheriff Steven Kuehhas will remain at the Sheriff’s Office in his current capacity. “Steve Kuehhas is a consummate professional and a great asset to the organization,” stated Sheriff Toulon. Prior to joining the Sheriff’s Office in 2016, Kuehhas worked at the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office where he was responsible for overseeing all criminal prosecutions in Suffolk’s five East End towns. He is a well-known lecturer on policing and legal issues and an Adjunct Professor in Criminal Justice at Suffolk Community College. In 2015, he was awarded the SUNY Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Adjunct Teaching.

Military members stationed in the Middle East are subjected to some brutal conditions, but every once in a while something happens that puts a smile on their face and brings them some comfort. That’s exactly what happened to two airmen, who within days of each other were brought together with puppies in need of rescue. They rescued the dogs and

went on to create strong bonds with them. Now, the Guardians of Rescue are working to help the airmen bring the dogs back home to America with them for good. “They have created inseparable bonds with these dogs and can’t imagine leaving them behind in the Middle East as they come back home to the states,” Robert

Dustin Fulmer (originally from Omaha, NE) and Senior Airman Jordan Jensen (originally from Ludington, MI) will be reunited with the dogs when they return home from the Middle East.

In the midst of a bad sandstorm, the two men had come across a 4-foot wood stake sticking up out of the ground with a rope tied to it. They immediately thought it was another IED, but it ended up being a tiny puppy with a rope around its neck. The puppy lay in agony, with its ears having been cut off, likely with a dull knife. The dog was full of blood and flies

were surrounding it. With only hours left to live, Jensen scooped her up, knowing he could not leave her behind. He nursed him back to health, naming him Kral, and they quickly became inseparable. It was only days later when out on another mission that Fulmer found a litter of dying puppies that he tried

Greeted by school administrators, board of education members, family and friends, the 370 members of the Class of 2018 marched in to “Pomp and Circumstance” played by the concert band and directed by Eric Dobmeier. Each of us has a purpose in this world; each one of us is a puzzle piece of what we call humanity and the goal is to find where we fit as individuals. Saczawa talked about setting goals and working hard. “Some of you might still not be sure of what you want to happen in the future and all of these things are ok because it’s the journey that you will remember and not the destination,” she said. “However, during the journey, it is important that you have some sort of purpose. Without a purpose in life, people become lifeless and feel as if their life has no meaning. My parting advice to my class is to always set goals for yourself. Even if they are constantly changing, always have something to work toward and always try to improve yourself to ensure that you are growing as a person. Also, stay confident in yourself and know that you are capable of being great because everyone sitting in front of me can do

amazing things if they set their minds to it.” Walter G. Over the months that followed, they created strong bonds with them. Both of them faced a big challenge, knowing that they would not be comfortable leaving the beloved dogs behind when they went back to America. That’s when Guardians of

Rescue stepped in to help bring them back home, as they have done for other military members. The lengthy mission of bringing them back to the U.S. was begun in the middle of the night by former military personnel. The dogs are currently being held in the country of Jordan, where there has been a holy war against dogs since October 2017, as they wait for their flight to the U.S. “We know that everyone wants to see these dogs be brought back home and

Class Days Celebrated F i f t h - g r a d e r s throughout the Copiague School District celebrated the completion of their elementary school days during their respective Class Day ceremonies on June 15th and 18th at the Copiague Middle School. The students reflected on their academic accomplishments, memories and looked forward to when they enter Copiague Middle School in September. and Educational Improvement, principal’s awards, most improved awards, ELA/Math awards and the Joseph Ferriso Memorial Award. As each student was called to the stage for acknowledgment, the fifth-grade teachers and principals facilitated the presentation of diplomas. Student Success In an effort to recognize students for their artistic talent, character, academic successes, leadership and citizenship, Copiague School District held its Superintendent’s Art Gallery Inductees and Student Recognition Awards ceremony prior to the June 18th board of education meeting in the Copiague Middle School auditorium. District administrators, faculty and board of education members gathered with invited students and their guests to celebrate their successes. The Superintendent’s Art Gallery inductees and Fine Arts Festival crowd favorites – 34 pieces of art – were on display for the audience to enjoy. Now in its 22nd year, the Superintendent’s Art Gallery began when the Copiague art teachers

selected several pieces of student artwork to display. Through the years, the collection has grown to provide a showcase of student artwork in corridors and offices in each of the schools. Each of the framed pieces is identified by a brass plate noting the student-artist’s name, grade level and year the piece was completed. Crowd favorite art pieces – three in total this year from the elementary, middle school and high school – were also chosen by the Copiague community during the annual Fine Arts Festival. The crowd favorite artwork is professional framed, and each winner receives a $100 check courtesy of the Copiague Teacher’s Association. Chosen by the Copiague Board of Education, the Student Recognition

Awards highlight students for their outstanding achievements. They are presented twice a year to a small number of students for their special accomplishments. Thirtyfive students were honored during the ceremony, as board of education members read a brief description from teachers and principals on why the students were designated for the honor. “Publicly recognizing excellence is our way of celebrating some of the great successes of the Copiague schools’ programs and, at the same time, enabling us to showcase outstanding role models to our school community,” said Copiague School District Superintendent of Schools Dr. Kathleen Bannon.

Copiague Middle School’s eighth-graders celebrated their move to Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School during moving up ceremonies on June 21st in the auditorium. Surrounded by district administrators, board of education members, family and friends, the students proceeded into the ceremony to “Pomp and Circumstance” played by the select members of the Tri-M Music Honor Society. Copiague Middle School Assistant Principal Michael Ferretti, who served as the master of ceremonies, welcomed guests. Copiague School District Superintendent of Schools Dr. Kathleen Bannon offered words of encouragement as the students begin the next chapter in their academic careers. “When you moved up from the elementary school three years ago, I am sure you thought your time in middle school would not pass so quickly,” she said. “Your years in high school will probably

pass just as quickly. Because that time goes so quickly, we want to be sure that you take advantage of all the high school has to offer you. Your middle school teachers have prepared you well and the high school teachers are ready to take you to the next level. If you continue to put in the hard work and effort that you did in, you will be successful in high school.” Three class representatives – Terrance Mason, Adrianna Michal and Kuba Szulejko – addressed the class during each of the respective moving up ceremonies. “We are closing one chapter in our lives and opening a new one,” Szulejko said. “Copiague has done an amazing job preparing us for our future endeavors. This is not the end but merely a new beginning. High school will be filled with many obstacles and challenges, but we will overcome them.” Copiague Middle School Principal Andrew Lagnado addressed the

soon-to-be Class of 2022. “As you enter this next phase of your education, be sure to remember a few important things that will set all of you up for success. Stay involved in all of the positive things that are offered at our high school. There are so many wonderful academic and extracurricular opportunities for you to take advantage of. Try a new activity, a new sport, take an interesting elective; get out of your comfort zone a little bit and take a risk. Stay motivated, focused and goal-oriented. Go that extra mile because what you put into it will determine what you take from it.
