Skylah McBean-Adams, a Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School junior, was selected to be one of 60 young women to participate in Running Start’s ninth annual Young Women’s Political Leadership Program held in Washington D.C. from July 6th through 12th. In February, McBeanAdams was encouraged by high school science chairperson Renee Locker to apply for the opportunity. With her leadership in the

community and ambition to succeed, McBean-Adams was a great candidate for the program. The Young Women’s Political Leadership Program focuses on the important issues facing young women today and gives participants the tools to run for office. Along with other participants, McBean-Adams will be instructed on a host of topics such as public speaking, networking, media training, and

campaign basics. Running Start is a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization, based in Washington, D.C., with a mission to give high school young women the encouragement, support, knowledge, and inspiration they need to be leaders in their schools and communities today, and be leaders on the national stage at a young age. “Skylah is a student who is committed to excellence,” said Mary Klein, director of guidance. “She is an ambitious and focused student who will continue to set high standards for herself and develop leadership skills to support her as she moves ahead in her life endeavors.” Photo courtesy of: Copiague Public School District

Honoring Superb Seniors the achievements and hard work of seniors throughout their academic careers in Copiague. During the evening, more than 60 academic and community scholarships were presented to deserving seniors. Additionally, students were honored with academic awards presented by faculty members, administrators and department directors and coordinators. “This evening is our

opportunity to celebrate the achievements of our graduating students,” said Principal Jeanette Altruda. “Each student with us this evening has been identified for executing traits of hard work, service and commitment in various areas of our school and community. Seniors, you have performed in a manner that allows us to continue our tradition of Copiague Pride.”

In honor of Flag Day, Deauville Gardens East Elementary School in the Copiague School District held a school-wide Flag Day assembly on June 15th. To kick off the presentation, members of the Copiague Fire Department presented the American flag as students recited the Pledge of Allegiance. Coordinated

by kindergarten teacher Natalia Brite, first-grade teacher Philomena Russo and second-grade teacher Ashley Marrazzo, students shared the history of the flag and what the stars and stripes represent. Additionally, one student from each grade was selected to read their essay about what the flag means to them. Tenasia Newsome, a

member of the New York Army National Guard and a cafeteria aide at Deauville Gardens East, explained the role she plays in serving the United States and answered students’ questions. As they proudly waved their American flags, kindergarten, firstand second-grade students led their third-, fourthand fifth-grade classmates in singing patriotic songs.

Building Knowledge Third-grade students at Deauville Gardens West Elementary School in the Copiague School District used their critical thinking skills to participate in Bricks4kidz, a hands-on

educational program that allows students to build with Lego bricks while fostering creativity and problem-solving abilities. In conjunction to their lesson about the Wright

A panel of judges evaluated the students’ performance on specific criteria including tone, intonation, balance, technique, accuracy/ execution, diction, rhythm precision, interpretation and discipline. To prepare for these performances, the Madrigals participated in a choral festival at the PAC Center at Walt Whitman High School in March. At the festival, students worked with Colin Britt, composer of “Afternoon On a Hill.” “The students loved the experience!” said Occhiogrosso. At the NYSSMA Festival, the Madrigals showcased their musical abilities in the highest level 6 division and received Gold for their performance. In Westfield, MA, the students participated in the Music in the Parks Competition where they won first place in their division and the Best Overall High School Chorus. In addition, Copiague student Steven Szabo received an award for the Best Student Accompanist.

Ode To The E Train By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Let me begin by saying that I absolutely love New York City. And by New York City, I mean Manhattan. None of this five boroughs nonsense. The City is one borough, in my estimation. Traveling to it, well that’s another animal entirely. Trains are all well and good, when they’re running on time. Or aren’t derailed by some vague “track condition” west of Jamaica. At rush hour. Of course, this particular scenario occurred during the one time – literally, one and only time – I attempted to commute into Manhattan during the evening rush. Everything was on or close to schedule, until it wasn’t. And then came the crackling,

completely unintelligible announcement over the train’s PA system, mumbling something about “apologize for the inconvenience” and “all passengers must disembark.” My friend and I looked at each other incredulously. This is why we don’t commute to work in the city, seemed to be the simultaneous thought. As we made our way to the exit, passing row upon row of oblivious passengers who apparently hadn’t heard – or comprehended – the command to exit, the mass confusion was evident. Now what? Where do we go? What do we do? Subway. Ugh. Here’s the thing. I am perfectly capable of picking a train line, determining which stop to get off at, which platform to wait on… but

subways? Subways require a special skillset. So many letters and numbers and crisscrossing routes. So much congestion. Almost zero chance to sit, or even lean against, a stationary object. Misery. Pure misery. And so the trek began, from one line (an “express” that made about 12 stops) to another, crammed in like sardines. Oh, the joys of commuting during rush hour. Let’s cross that one off the bucket list. {For those inquiring readers wishing to know the status of Buddy, my betta fish, I am happy to report that he recently celebrated his four-month birthday and is still swimming maniacal laps around his bowl.}

For the 19th consecutive year, the Copiague School District honored students’ artwork at a special ceremony prior to the June Board of Education meeting. Nominated by their art teacher and selected by Superintendent of Schools Charles A. Leunig, 25 students were chosen to have their artwork featured in the Superintendent’s Art Gallery. The pieces selected were framed and identified by a brass plate noting the student artist’s name, grade level, and year the piece was completed and will be showcased throughout the district. To commemorate their artistic achievement, students received a framed certificate presented by Leunig.

In addition, the artwork of Alice Sztabinski from Susan E. Wiley Elementary School, Copiague Middle School student Prince McKnight and Walter G. O’Connell High School student Nicolette Giordano were featured in the 2015 Fine Arts Festival, held during the district’s annual budget vote and board trustee election, and voted Crowd Favorite by the Copiague community. For this honor, the three students each received their framed art piece as well as a $100 check from the Copiague Teachers Association. Aaron McFadden, a Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School student-athlete, traveled with his coach George Schroeder to the University of Albany where he competed in the New York State Public High School Athletic Association’s championships in Track and Field on June 12th and 13th. As a result, McFadden placed first in the

110-meter hurdles with a new career time of 00:14.231. McFadden’s new career time is ranked No. 1 in Suffolk County and No. 3 in New York State and qualified him for the All-Long Island track and field team. McFadden also placed second in the NYS Federation Championships, which includes all track and field student-athletes in the state.

Keaton. Schatz later gave up the Hollywood life in order to enlist into World War II, where he kept his acting past a secret. Schatz was awarded a Purple Heart after being hit with shrapnel from a kamikaze attack on the USS Sigsbee.
