Staff Recognized For Service earned recognition from the New York State School Boards Association for their participation in professional development opportunities and leadership workshops. President Carolyn Dodd received the Lifetime Achievement Award, Second Vice President Laura Pawlewicz and trustee Susan Benard Handler earned the Mastery Award and trustee Allie McDonough received the Excellence Award. First Vice President Juan Leon earned the Mastery Award earlier this year. Representatives from BBS Architects and Park East Construction provided their monthly construction update from the March 2016 facilities bond that was approved by voters. Progress continues on the addition to the high school, which remains on target for completion in August 2020. The window replacement is nearly complete at Edmund W. Miles Middle School. Classroom and bathroom renovations will take place this summer at Northwest and Northeast elementary schools along with other improvements. At the Park North Administration building, masonry repairs have finished, while work continues on the new ADAcompliant ramp and stairs for the back entrance.

SOCIAL STUDIES EDUCATOR HONORED - Amityville Memorial High School social studies teacher Margot Howard, center, was recognized by the Long Island Council for the Social Studies with the Robert P. Flinn Award. It is presented to a nontenured social studies teacher on Long Island who has demonstrated strong knowledge of social studies content and current issues, is effective and inspiring, and has the ability to convey the importance and vitality of social studies to students. Ms. Howard has taught at the high school for four years, including global history and Advanced Placement human geography. 11th ANNUAL ALUMNI BASKETBALL GAME - On May 31, 2019, the Copiague High School Boys’ Basketball Program and Copiague Booster Club hosted it’s 11th Annual Alumni Basketball game in the Walter G. O’Connell/Copiague High School Gymnasium which was run by the Boys’ Varsity Basketball Coach - Steve Rebholz. Graduates from as far back as 1969 and early as 2018 joined together to make two teams filled with Copiague pride and talent. All who attended were treated to a competitive contest filled with Copiague spirit which rivaled a professional game A halftime break included a very exciting 3 point shoot-out along with raffles so generously donated: Splish Splash, Adventureland, Ducks Tickets, and Red Lobster. It was a fantastic evening which brought friends, family, school, and the community together.

To kick off the summer and summer reading, Great Neck Road Elementary School in the Copiague School District held a tailgating themed book giveaway outside the school on June 12. Teachers decorated

different cars in different sports themes. Members of the student council were on hand to assist the younger students browse and choose their book selections. There were plenty of genres to choose from so each student could

pick the perfect fit for summer reading. Various organizations, including Supply House, the Great Neck Road ParentTeacher Association and community members, donated the books for the school.

A trio of orchestra ensembles from the Amityville Union Free School District received gold ratings at the New York State School Music Association’s Major Organization Assessment Festival. Earning the top honors were the Park Avenue Memorial Elementary School sixth grade

orchestra under the direction of Christine Klimek, the Edmund W. Miles Middle School orchestra conducted by Bianca Ferrante and the Amityville Memorial High School orchestra led by Ms. Ferrante. According to NYSSMA assessment guidelines, a gold rating is awarded to ensembles that

have demonstrated an “outstanding level of technical and artistic skill in each of the evaluated categories.” Those areas included tone, intonation, balance, technique, accuracy/execution, rhythm and interpretation. Each ensemble performed three pieces for the judges.

The Charity of the Month for June is: New Ground www.newground.org

New Ground is a non-profit organization that helps break the cycle of homelessness right here in Nassau and Suffolk counties by dealing with it’s underlying causes, rather than merely treating symptoms. New Ground empowers children, parents and Veterans to achieve their goals so that they can secure a brighter future for generations to come! This organization provides a portfolio of programming delivered by professionals, so that a set of services is customized in a unique way for each Veteran and family they serve. This way they can solve all of the underlying causes of their situation at the same time. They truly believe that this is how you break the cycle of homelessness! Since opening their doors in 1991, New Ground has seen over 80% of the families they have served “graduate” from their programs self sufficient and in permanent stable housing. This week I would like to share yet another success story. Please note: The name of the individual mentioned in this story has been changed for confidentiality purposes. A Long Island resident, Tina, found New Ground when she was facing eviction from her apartment and had nowhere to go with her two young sons. She had fallen behind on rent because of a significant decrease in her paycheck and she did not have the means to pay off this debt or to afford a new apartment. She moved into the Long Term Housing Program with New Ground, where she paid an affordable rent based on her income and began to receive all the intensive social work and education services necessary to help her turn things around. While in the program, Tina paid off significant debts on her credit report, increased her score by over 200 points, created a savings and secured better paying stable employment. However, her real focus was education. She agreed with New Ground that the way out of her cycle of poverty was a higher degree to ensure greater

income. Tina juggled work, school and raising two boys along with many other life responsibilities during her years with New Ground. She attended an Associate Degree program part time and finished in three years. She then immediately started a Bachelor Degree program, which she completed in three years. Following each accomplishment, she secured better paying employment and used her extra earnings to reach her financial goals. Upon completing the New Ground program and moving into a market rent apartment, she continued her education plan. This May she graduated with her Master Degree in Social Work and this summer she will become a homeowner! Tina stated, “I feel awesome, I feel accomplished. It has been a long journey. I’m just happy and overwhelmed. I love working with people and there is a big need for people to care for other people now. It’s what New Ground did for me, helping me to get where I am. Now it’s my turn to help someone else.” As you can see, New Ground is a huge help to the homeless community on Long Island and is there for those in need. They are currently in need of volunteers to help out in various areas of their organization. If you have a background in Education and wish to help tutor individuals out of their Levittown Main Office, the opportunity is available. You can also get involved with one of their Event Committees to help coordinate one of their upcoming special events, or with their Program Committee, which meets quarterly to review overall programs and services. Wiley Elementary School in the Copiague School District have been hard at work practicing their multiplication facts for the end of year competition held on June 14. After spending many months learning to recite the multiplication tables with ease, the five fastest and most accurate mathematicians went head to head against their classmates. Twenty students battled to be the quickest and most accurate and prizes were awarded to the top three finalists: Jai’den Pernell (first), Geovanny Espinal (second) and Alexander Almonte (third). Prior to joining the Dominican Village staff John worked for twenty-five years at the Helen Keller National Center in Kings Point as a bereavement specialist and later at Our Lady of Consolation Nursing Home Rehabilitation Center in

West Islip, NY serving persons with Alzheimer’s disease and dementia. While he is part of Dominican Village’s Wellness team John is a leader who listens, counsels and provides support. He implements new ideas and sets reasonable goals for his staff to meet, even surpass. He provides a calm and thoughtful way
