As I write this column, just two days from the summer solstice, I am inspired by several seasonal thoughts… Weather. That great natural occurrence that has the ability to singlehandedly cancel any plans you may have made, no matter how far in advance, with no regard for reservations, ticket purchases, how many people you may have coordinated with… When Mother Nature is compelled to bless us with a torrential thunderstorm, blizzard, blistering heat or any other, more serious, natural disaster, you can say goodbye to your beach day. Society. We seem to enjoy our solitude, even when we are among several thousand of our closest friends in a

stadium or concert arena. As I mentioned in a previous column, I have tickets to about seven upcoming performances over the next several months. In the three shows I have attended so far, it was amazing to look around at the audience and see the great majority on their cell phones, taking “selfies” with friends, surfing Facebook, Instagram… everything but actually listening to the music. Money well spent. Traffic. Long Island is known for its congestion. While summer may bring a bit of respite in the form of school being out of session and some taking their vacation time elsewhere, this is counteracted by those who migrate en masse to the beaches and parks and pools daily, clogging up every major

artery on the Island. Going back to the summer concert scene, if you plan to attend any shows this summer, you had best be prepared to wait, especially as you attempt to exit. Just imagine about 15 lanes merging into two onto Ocean Parkway. I don’t have to – I’ve experienced it more than my fair share already. It’s not pretty. Let’s hope this summer brings its fair share of sunshine (on weekends, preferably, for those of us who work for a living during the week). And if you happen to be in attendance at a concert in the coming weeks, try putting down the phone for a few minutes, focus on the stage and enjoy the moment. Oh, and try to chill getting out of the parking lot. You’re going to be there awhile.

O’Connell Copiague High School students were celebrated during the annual National Honor Society candle-lighting ceremony on June 4th. Forty-eight sophomores, juniors and seniors joined more than 45 present members into the Isabella M. Driscoll Chapter of the National Honor Society. During the ceremony, the society’s executive

board members spoke on the meaning of the four pillars - scholarship, leadership, service and character - that defines membership into the NHS. In addition to possessing these qualities traits, students must have a cumulative average of at least 90 percent. In front of family and friends, members of the Board of Education, Superintendent of Schools Charles A. Leunig, High School Principal Jeanette

Altruda and NHS coadvisors Rose Ann Fuss and Allison Weller, and high school English teacher and special guest speaker Meredith Coates extended their congratulations to the students on this honor and achievement. “Use your character, scholarship and leadership to serve the world around you,” said Coates. “This is how you make your story memorable. Conversation with members of the Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School Class of 2015 top 20, the Copiague School District Board of Education decided to hold a second informal get together with high school students.

Held on June 10th, the Board met with high school students actively involved in clubs and athletics to gather their opinions on a variety of matters, including the district’s facilities, academic and cocurricular programs and technology. The students also shared their overall

educational experience and offered suggestions on programs they would like to see offered at the high school. Due to the valuable opinions shared by the students, the Board plans to continue to hold the informal gatherings in the fall.

STARS FOR SOLDIERS - Throughout the month of May, Dr. Maria Salonia and staff members of South Bay Sports & Physical Therapy dedicated a wall in the lobby to honor veterans. The stars were each given a name of a veteran near and dear to patients’ and staff’s hearts. Councilwoman Jackie Gordon recently congratulated graduates of the Parent Leadership Initiative of the Town of Babylon at a commencement ceremony at Town Hall in Lindenhurst. The Parent Leadership

Suffolk County Legislator Kevin McCaffrey recently had the opportunity to attend the awards presentation at the 26th Annual BACCA Juried Art Show, which was held at the Old Town Hall. The event was widely attended not only by the participating artists, but by the greater community of art enthusiasts as well. This particular art exhibition involved a variety of mediums including oils, acrylics, portraits, mixed media, drawing, watercolors, and pastels. All of the pieces were elegantly displayed throughout the Old Town

Hall, providing a first rate viewing experience. Additionally, many of the artists and BACCA board members were on hand to answer questions and provide insightful interpretive guidance. “Babylon Village and the surrounding communities are truly chock-full of talented individuals,” said McCaffrey. “We are so lucky to live in a community that fully embraces everything that truly defines its people. It made perfect sense to hold this show in one of the most noteworthy historic buildings in the area, as these artists are building upon our local

history right before our eyes. I very much look forward to attending next year’s installment.” According to BACCA’s website, “BACCA provides local artists with a variety of opportunities to help them create, learn new techniques, and display their work. On the evening of June 8th, the sun was shining and so was the school spirit of the Amityville community as the Amityville Memorial High School hosted their annual district-wide Pride Day. The celebration kicked off with a performance from the Amityville Memorial High School Jazz Ensemble, under the direction of Brian Carter, as students and their families enjoyed a variety complimentary food and beverages. Fourth-grade teacher and returning Master of Ceremonies Marc Engler provided a few opening

remarks to welcome a field full of students, family, friends, faculty, staff and administration. Students from the Northeast Elementary School led guests in the reciting of the Pledge of Allegiance. They also performed songs of celebration to set the upbeat tone for the remainder of the evening during which students were recognized as Star Awards recipients, commending their achievements in music, art and academics. Celebrating music and dance, the high school step team made a surprise appearance and showcased

their various dance moves. The gathering continued with performances by the Park Avenue Memorial Elementary School, the Edmund W. Miles Middle School, the Amityville Memorial High School choruses and a Disney song medley performance by Northwest Elementary School students, directed by Roxanne Tannenbaum. On Sunday, June 7th, the Suffolk Sports Hall of Fame recognized the top senior male and female athletes from each high school in Suffolk County at the 15th Annual Dellecave Excellence Brunch. This year, Walter G. O Connell Copiague High School nominated Ihnacinse

Grady and Aaron McFadden for the Dellecave Award. Nominees were chosen on the basis of outstanding athletic ability as well as having displayed exceptional character and integrity. In addition to this honor, each award recipient is provided with a $1,000 scholarship.

The Dellecave Awards, named in honor of one of the founding fathers of the Suffolk County Hall of Fame, are presented by The Economic Opportunity Council of Suffolk, Inc. and the Butch Dellecave Foundation, Inc.

The Amityville boys spring track team captured both league and division championships during its incredible run this season. The Warriors wrapped

up their winning campaign at Comsewogue High School, where they competed against 16 other teams in the meet. Under the coaching of Reynolds

Hawkins and Jerry Pollock, the boys took the title by 53 points and went undefeated in league meets this year.

It was a fun-filled day at Northeast Elementary School on June 5th when fathers and male guardians arrived for a Father’s Day Pre-K celebration. The Brittney Walsh Memorial Fund recognized three graduating seniors from the Walter G. O’Connell High School. This year’s winners were: Chaukim Peters for Track, Gabrielle Clement for Soccer and Carlos Giaraffa for the Writing Component only. I picture my house nicely decorated and in my mind “just so.” But to tell the truth, it’s nowhere near; I still have miles to go. My counters and tables are cluttered, I should just put everything away; But some things have no place to go, so in the way they stay. I empty all the closets in an attempt to make it neat, But then I get real tired and I need to take a seat. All the dust has made me stuffy, and so I find it hard to work. I’ve decided it’s my family’s fault as I slowly go berserk.
