National School Board Visit

Little Champion Three year-old Thomas Mannina of Copiague entered his first Taequando competition (The 2017 UCTA Festival, at the Mitchel field athletic complex) this past Saturday and took home a first place trophy and a second place medal! Thomas started Taequando about a month ago and has excelled.

He goes twice a week to “Ultimate Champion Taequando” in Copiague, and his instructor is Master Han. In addition to meeting new friends and getting a good workout, Taequando teaches him good manners, discipline, concentration, focus, hard work, courage and self-defense.

One Tap shoes laced and ready to go. Costume hung on the doorknob with care. Steps on constant replay in my head {flap, flap, flap, shuffle hop…} all in preparation for the big night, my return to the dance recital stage after a five-year hiatus. Cue the butterflies. I have had a love/ hate relationship with performing for the majority of my twenty years at the studio. On the one hand, there is nothing quite comparable to that moment when the lights come up, the music begins to play and the rush of the moment engulfs you to the point that you simply perform – no overthinking what step comes next, am I smiling too much,

not enough; are my arms graceful, my hands “jazzy”… Of course, there is also that other scenario, that one that plays out in your subconscious the night before – the one where all the carefully rehearsed choreography evaporates from your memory at the most inopportune moment; generally when you happen to be front and center, spotlight squarely on you, smile frozen as you desperately try to ad lib something, anything. I would say I’ve had my share of each extreme through the years. It began with my very first recital at the tender age of six when I flew onstage mid-song, arms flailing, as I tried to catch up with my classmates as

we performed “Somewhere Out There” in our lemon yellow tutus. It ended, some twenty-plus years later, in a “big girl” tutu of silvery sparkle, dancing to “Wizards of Winter,” only this time I made it out for the entire performance. As I write these words, the stage is set – pun intended – for my grand finale tomorrow evening. Two numbers to perform over two acts, including, appropriately enough, the grand finale to “One” from A Chorus Line. One more time in the spotlight, one last night to shine… at least that’s the plan, anyway. Coming Next Week: Curtain Call

Annual Senior Walk An Amityville Memorial High School tradition continued on June 8th when the soon-to-be graduates visited each school in the district. The students filled five buses which traveled from building to building for the annual Senior Walk. Clad in their caps and gowns and with “Pomp and Circumstance” blaring over the public address

systems, the seniors walked through the halls of their former elementary schools and middle school, which were lined with today’s students. Many stopped to high-five the admiring youngsters or hug their former teachers. “I heard over and over again from the students that the Senior Walk was a ‘walk down memory lane,’” said Acting Principal

Dr. Lois Etzel. “For the younger students, it was very motivating for them to see the seniors in their caps and gowns parading through the halls.” The Senior Walk capped off a week of celebratory activities including senior awards, Senior Athlete College Celebration Day and sports awards.

Technology Makes Math Fun Third-graders used technology to improve their math and analytical skills at Northwest Elementary School in the Amityville Union Free School District. Students in Lori Heavey’s class surveyed their classmates’

“favorites” and used Google Slides to present their results. Each child had to pick a topic, such as favorite color, food, pet or sport, create four options and get responses from their peers. They used Google Slides on

Biotechnologies

As part of their final exam, Advanced Placement biology students at Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School were tasked with researching and presenting on different current biotechnologies. In addition to a PowerPoint presentation,

students used virtual reality zSpace computers to design images of different technologies. After the design phase was complete, students printed models of their images using a 3-D printer. Some of the 3-D items generated included a heart,

DNA strands, kidneys, a nose and teeth, which are all representative of biotechnologies such as cloning, heart transplants, tissue engineering, embryonic and adult stem cell research.

On Saturday, June 10th, members of the Town of Babylon community and Boy Scout Troop 284 came together to dedicate a recently-constructed gazebo in memory of Eagle Scout Joseph Ferriso, who tragically lost his life in a car accident in 2015. Ferriso, who grew up in Copiague, was a sophomore at Hofstra University where he played on the men’s NCAA Division I lacrosse team. He was previously a student-athlete at Kellenberg Memorial High School. Nick Hernandez,

of Troop 284, organized the construction and dedication of the gazebo for his own Eagle Scout project. Town of Babylon Supervisor Rich Schaffer delivered opening remarks and a special prayer was led by Rev. Dariusz Koszyk of Our Lady of the Assumption Church in Copiague. Words of memoriam were also delivered by Supervisor Schaffer, Joseph’s father Al Ferriso, Troop 284 Scoutmaster Daniel Jacobsen, Eagle Mentor

Gazebo Dedication Michael Greb, Eagle Scout and friend of Joseph Erik Sattler, and Eagle Scout Nick Hernandez. At the end of the ceremony, Joseph’s family, including his father Al, mother Debbie, and sister Amy, joined with Eagle Scout Nick Hernandez to cut a ribbon and reveal a plaque bearing the words “In Loving Memory of Joseph A. Ferriso, Eagle Scout, Troop 284, Copiague,” along with a photo of Joseph and the Boy Scouts Organization seal.

Three educators from Edmund W. Miles Middle School in the Amityville Union Free School District were honored at Teacher Appreciation Awards Night hosted by Suffolk County Legislature Presiding Officer DuWayne Gregory. The honorees were ninthgrade guidance counselor Kerry Kearney, social studies chairwoman and

ninth-grade teacher Jaclyn O’Hagan and eighth-grade special education teacher Renee Silone. They were recognized for working above and beyond what is required, collaborating with colleagues to improve student achievement, inspiring students to become lifelong learners and for making a positive impact on education.

“These educators have extraordinary relationships with our students, and our students really look up to them,” said Principal Edward Plaia. “Their expectations are high, they make no excuses and are always willing to learn and grow themselves. They epitomize excellence.”

Inspiration for Students Author Peter Catalanotto visited Park Avenue Memorial Elementary School in the Amityville Union Free School District on June 13th to share his expertise as both a writer and illustrator. Mr. Catalanotto spoke to students about how he generates ideas for stories. When he first became a professional writer, he remembered advice from his elementary school teachers: write about something you know about or care about. That led to

his first book, “Dylan’s Day Out,” inspired by his dog. “Writing is about exploring ideas and finding your best idea,” he said in telling students that brainstorming is an integral part of the process. He talked about how he was an illustrator for other authors before publishing his own books. Students excitedly watched as Mr. Catalanotto drew a face, demonstrating and explaining the steps he takes to create detailed facial features.

The author’s visit was sponsored by the Amityville Parent Teacher Council and organized by library media specialist Timothy Quinn. The goal was to get students excited about reading before summer break, and staff from the Amityville Public Library also visited to talk about summer reading programs for children and teens. The school also hosted a book fair in the days prior to Mr. Catalanotto’s visit.

At its May 19th, Convention, a motion was made and approved to dissolve the Long Island Federation of Women’s Clubs, Inc. (LIFWC) after 124 years.
