Members of the Copiague Builders Club at the Copiague Middle School worked together with their school and local community to collect shoes for those in need. The club partnered with Give Your Sole, a nonprofit agency that provides men, women and children with

moderately worn sneakers, shoes, boots and footwear. The organization then teams up with local rescue missions and shelters in New York City to distribute the shoes. The club collected 775 pairs of shoes since starting its initiative in January. Students sorted the shoes,

tied them together and bagged them for transport. Builders Club adviser Maria Ostrofsky said the club has been organizing the shoe collection for 19 years and hopes to reach 10,000 pairs donated next year.

New Ground is a non-profit organization that helps to break the cycle of homelessness right here in Nassau and Suffolk counties. Since opening their doors in 1991, New Ground has seen over 80% of the families they have served “graduate” from their programs self sufficient and in permanent stable housing. New Ground empowers children, parents and Veterans to achieve their goals so that they can secure a brighter future for generations to come!

Organics Today Farm is a small organic farm is East Islip, which grows non GMO organic produce that you can trust! Their farmstand is open to the public every day with fresh picked organic produce! Their owner Mike runs various programs for the community such as Pregnant Drives, Field Trips, Volunteer Opportunities, Gardening Classes and Bee-Keeping Classes! Their Work For Food program is also another way the community can become involved with the farm. This program allows people to volunteer their time and contribute as few or as many hours as desired, in replace for a bundle of fresh organic food! There are many duties that can be performed on the farm and Organics Today Farm is accepting new volunteers at the moment! There are plenty of success stories of people who benefited from their services. One in particular I’d like to spotlight is Nina’s. Nina was a single mother with one son. They both had a chronic illness that significantly impacted their health. She had struggled in the past to establish a life for her family because of the unpredictable nature of their health. All New Ground families and Veterans require a unique approach and plan of action, but this was considerably greater for Nina. She needed supports put in place to ensure her family’s future despite the ongoing need for unexpected lengthy breaks from employment.

Memories Revisited Shortly before 10:30 a.m. on June 6, yellow school buses pulled up in the driveway of Northwest Elementary School, but it wasn’t young children who stepped off. Instead, it was the 241 members of Amityville Memorial High School’s senior class. The soon-to-be graduates visited all of their former schools during the senior walk, an annual tradition to celebrate the impending milestone. Led by Assistant Principal Brian Suckle and Dean of Students John Cardone, the Class of 2019 walked through the first, second and third

grade hallways in order, as the elementary students lined the halls to cheer them on. Many made signs congratulating the seniors who were clad in their red caps and gowns. Pomp and Circumstance played over the speakers. The scene was repeated as the seniors moved on to Northeast Elementary School — where they began their educational careers in pre-K or kindergarten — then to Park Avenue Memorial Elementary School and Edmund W. Miles Middle School. Seniors exchanged hugs with former teachers,

who beamed with pride in seeing past students all grown up, having achieved so much and ready to accomplish so much more. Northeast kindergarten teacher Dyan Aversa said this year’s senior class included students she had during her first year teaching kindergarten in Amityville. Pre-K teacher Lisa Carey pulled her son, James Carey, out of the line of graduates to give him a big hug in front of a poster she hung up filled with pictures from his childhood.

One of the growing problems with cremation is what to do with the cremated remains (ashes) after the cremation has taken place. The Catholic Church simply states that the cremated remains of the person should be treated the same as the body. Ashes should be placed in an urn and interred in a family cemetery plot or placed in an above ground niche. Each cemetery has its own set of rules regarding cremated remains. One will say that the cremated remains constitute the equivalent of a body. Thus interring ashes in some cemeteries are equivalent in interring a casket. Some cemeteries allow three interments of ashes in each gravesite. Some cemeteries insist on an urn or cement urn vault for cremated remains. Cemeteries in this area have very liberal rules concerning the interment of cremated remains. Each cemetery has a different set of rules and you should check with your cemetery regarding their rules and regulations. The Westhampton Presbyterian Church has a memorial garden where cremated remains can be interred and name of the deceased can be placed on the monument in the garden. St. Mark’s Episcopal Church has above ground niches behind the church also in memorial garden. Calverton national Cemetery provides above ground niches for ashes. Long Island National Cemetery uses small graves which are too near a tree or road to inter a full size casket for interring ashes. Providing both parties agree to be cremated. If only the husband wants to be cremated, and the wife does not, then the ashes are interred in a full size grave so that the wife can be buried at a later date. Many people opt to have their ashes spread in the ocean. The law is that the ashes must be spread at a distance of three miles from the shoreline. The reality is there are more ashes on shorelines than there are in any cemetery. Some people like to keep their loved ones ashes home with them. There is special jewelry that has been designed so that some of the ashes can be kept in a pendant or key chain or in a ring so that they are always near. Funeral homes are only required to hold ashes for two years. After that time and after proper notification funeral homes are allowed to inter the ashes in marked graves. However, I have had people come back to me after 20 years and say that Mom has passed and now they need Dads ashes so they can be buried together. My reason for writing this column is to make you aware of the fact that something has to be done with the ashes after the cremation takes place. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to call us at any time.

Both solutions can keep the house lights on, appliances working and, in the event of a weatherrelated power outage or other emergency, will keep the home the safest place to ride out the storm. Understanding the differences and capabilities between these two options makes selecting the best backup power plan much easier. Portable generators: An instant but temporary backup power supply Portable gasoline generators are available at just about any home improvement retailer and work well as a quick

solution to roll out during an outage. Additionally, Generac advises on portable generator safety: These units need to be taken outside and kept 25 feet away from an opening to the home to keep carbon monoxide fumes outside. the Generac Guardian plumbs into the home’s existing natural gas or propane line, turning on automatically when utility power fails. These generators are installed just outside the house like an airconditioning unit. They can be set to exercise weekly and can even send the homeowner updates using a service like Mobile Link™ about its successful exercise, change in status or low battery, as well as maintenance reminders or fault alerts. Unlike portable generators, home standby generators need to be professionally installed and sized to fit the home, so homeowners should allow for an installation process.
