Matter of Fact Fourth- and fifth-grade students at Deauville Gardens East Elementary School in the Copiague School District recently participated in a handson science enrichment program that allowed them to explore matter and its relationship to temperature.

During the program, science instructor Brian Wallrapp used dry ice to demonstrate its effect on a coin and spoon and students observed the dry ice reacting with water. Wallrapp also showed the students how various minerals found in the sun react to heat. The young

scientists wore light refracting glasses and were able to see rays of light reflecting off objects in the classroom. “The students were amazed by the experiments,” said fourthgrade teacher Jennifer Kelly.

Alive and Well I recently read an article in the latest issue of Editor & Publisher magazine which touched on the apparent surge in the success of community newspapers over the last several years, a direct counterpoint to the oftpeddled theory that “print is dead.” The majority of credit for these weeklies’ steady success seems to point to their unique ability to provide extremely localized content that, quite simply, cannot be found anywhere else. Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School senior and accomplished soccer player Asante Carroll will compete on the Division I soccer team at Niagara University this fall after solidifying his commitment by signing a letter of intent. “He has great speed and

My goal is to build and support consistency using technology across the district to ensure our students are graduating our high school with the technology skills needed to be successful in life, and in their future endeavors.”

Powering Creativity Third-grade students at Deauville Gardens West Elementary School in the Copiague School District recently received a visit from representatives from Bricks 4 Kidz, a hands-on educational program that allows students to build with Lego bricks while

fostering creativity, critical thinking and problemsolving skills. During the lesson, students learned about the Wright brothers and their goal to build the first powered aircraft. With that inspirational story in mind, third-graders

worked collaboratively and followed step-by-step instructions to create their own motorized model airplane. “The students were so engaged and loved building their model airplanes,” said third-grade teacher Christine Orlando.

Thirty students from Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School were inducted into the Isabella M. Driscoll Chapter of the National Honor Society during a candlelighting ceremony on June 2nd. NHS advisers Clare Nugent and Allison Weller began the ceremony by explaining the significance of the society as well as the high level of achievement the students demonstrated to be inducted. At its special business meeting on May 9th, the Copiague School District Board of Education appointed James McCabe as the coordinator of guidance and appointed Kelly Urraro to the position of director of technology. McCabe and Urraro will respectively assume their duties on July 1st, 2016. McCabe brings to his new role a wealth of knowledge and experience in administrative leadership and school counseling. He began his education at Marist College where he received a Bachelor of Arts in psychology, followed by a Master of Education in school counseling from Hofstra University.
