Suffolk Federal recently honored North Babylon High School students who completed the Suffolk Federal Scholars Program, a web-based education program which supports financial education at schools throughout Suffolk County. Suffolk Federal partners with EverFi, Inc. to bring this interactive financial management program to participating local high school students at no cost to the schools or taxpayers. The students received certificates during an exciting ceremony at the high school. “These students are our future generation. The more we can do to help them grow and prosper, the more our country will benefit,”

explained William J. O’Brien, Suffolk Federal’s President and CEO. “Suffolk Federal is proud to partner with EverFi to bring financial education to local students, to prepare each one of them for a sound financial future and to shine a light on the importance of financial literacy.” The 10-unit course includes over six hours of programming covering a variety of financial topics such as savings, investments, credit cards, and student loans and other critical financial literacy concepts. This past Memorial Day weekend, the Navy’s Blue Angels returned to the Island for their annual turn as one of the Jones Beach Air Show’s featured attractions. Even though it’s just a short drive down Ocean Parkway, my family and I have never managed to get out there to witness the spectacle up close and in person. Too much traffic, too many people, too much of a hassle… This year, though, I realized that the planes would be practicing right around the corner at Republic Airport during the week leading up to the show. And so, on Friday afternoon, a friend and I made a point of taking a ride down to the Airport Plaza shopping center to see if we could catch a glimpse. A glimpse? Try witnessing all six of the planes whizzing overhead and whoknows-what speed, close enough so that we could read the numbers on them! What a sight!

If only I had my camera, I thought. Well, after that close call, I decided to make it my mission to get a shot of them flying to or from the air show over the weekend, since I knew they would cross over my house on their flight down to the beach. Saturday afternoon, as I heard them approach, I ran out with my camera – only to catch the cloud of dust they had left in their wake. Okay, I thought, I’ll just wait here on the deck – listening to the simulcast on the radio – until I hear them wrapping up their routine. Then, all I have to do is aim my camera for the sky and I can’t miss them! Easier said than done. I saw them coming, all right. The problem was it’s a little hard to frame something moving at hundreds of miles an hour in your camera lens before it’s passed you by. I managed to snap one shot as they approached, which, after the camera’s natural delay, resulted in a rather fuzzy shot of the planes whizzing right out of the frame. There’s always tomorrow, I thought. The next morning, I drove

down to the local town beach and waited, poised for the approach. Sure enough, I saw the HC-130 slowly making its way south, a sure sign that the six Blue Angels were not far behind. And then… out of the clouds they came – all six, flying in perfect formation. And again, I was only able to get just one shot before I lost track of the formation. I followed their flight into the distance, where I was actually able to view most of the theatrics which followed, albeit from a great distance. I imagine it was much better up close, but hey – not a bad seat on my beach either! I must have stood there for a solid 30 minutes, watching the back and forth, up and down, looping motion of the jets, until at last, they began their return trip to Republic. This time, I got it. One...two… three shots as they came closer and closer – still a little blurred, but sharp against the clear blue sky. Finally! As they flew off into the distance, I heard one bystander mumble, “There they go – our tax dollars at work.” But she was smiling.

Golf Classic Set Some 190 golfers teed off to benefit the Good Samaritan Hospital Foundation during the 19th Annual Golf Classic and Tennis Tournament, held on May 16th, at the Glen Oaks Club in Old

Westbury. The event, which has been sponsored by Astoria Federal Savings Bank for the past 19 years, raised $265,000 for the hospital’s neurosciences and honored Kevin J. Mullins,

MD, FAANS, FACS, Chief of Neurosurgery and Director of Neurosurgical Services. Dr. Mullins is a board certified neurosurgeon and founder of Long Island Neurosurgical & Pain Specialists.

A tradition for almost 70 years, the Narrasketuck Yacht Club in Amityville will once again be offering junior sailing lessons this summer for kids from ages 9-17. Applications are now being accepted. Lessons run for two four-week sessions from Monday through Thursday of each week. Beginner lessons are offered in the morning; intermediate and advanced classes are offered in the afternoon. The first session begins on Monday, June 27th; the second session begins on Monday, July 25th. Yacht club membership is not required to participate. Students work with our certified instructors to learn sailing and sailboat racing skills in our fleet of training boats. In addition to instilling a love of the outdoors and introducing youngsters to a lifelong sport, sailing is fun, builds confidence, and teaches teamwork and leadership. As a culmination to their reading and writing unit, kindergarten students at Susan E. Wiley Elementary School in the Copiague School District celebrated the lifelong unity of the letters Q and U in a special wedding ceremony on May 25th. Throughout the school year, the students learned about the sounds that letters make together and that letters, such as Q and U, appear together in most words. To help the

kindergartners remember this helpful tip, they attended as guests to the wedding of Q and U. Dressed for the special occasion, girls arrived wearing dresses, while the boys wore suits. For the ceremony, each student colorfully decorated a Q and U headband and had popsicle sticks with paper cutouts of a dress and suit labeled with the letters Q and U. The large Q and U cutout letters, held by two

students, walked down the isle as ceremonial wedding music played. Assistant Principal Kristina Biamonte acted as the officiant for the wedding. The letters sealed their unity with a kiss and proceeded back down the isle. Following the wedding, kindergartners gathered in their classroom to enjoy wedding cake and drew pictures of the wedding gift they wanted to give Q and U.

Hatching Chicks First-grade students in Terri Alzmann’s class at Deauville Gardens West Elementary School in the Copiague School District learned about the life cycle of a chicken by observing the progression of an egg hatching into a chick. During the study unit,

the students discussed the elements that make up a chicken egg such as the shell, albumen, chalazae and membrane. The eggs were kept in an incubator in the classroom. As a class, they kept a 21-day countdown until the nine chicks hatched. During

that time, they observed the eggs and wrote in their “My Chick Journal,” taking notes and logging any changes in the eggs’ appearances. Once the chicks arrived, the children had the opportunity to hold and hand-feed them.

Flag Day is June 14th. A time to display and honor our Flag. With this in mind, I thought I would provide you with information about the use of the United States Flag during a funeral service. The following regulation is taken from the National Flag Foundation, the authoritative body for honoring, caring and displaying the American Flag: “The ceremony of draping the casket with a United States Flag is used to honor veterans, “patriotic citizens”. Upon further investigation I have learned that this has come to mean every citizen of the United States has the right to have his or her casket draped with the United States Flag. Thus firemen, policemen and everyday citizens who were not veterans may opt to have their casket flag draped. However, the family of the deceased who were not veterans must provide the flag and it must measure 9.5 feet by 5 feet. For veterans who have been honorably discharged from the military, the flag is provided by the Veterans Administration and secured by the funeral director. However, the family must be able to provide a copy of the veteran’s discharge papers for proof of service. This being done, and whenever possible, a military honor guard will be present at the committal service of the veteran to present the flag to the next of kin of the deceased. The rules for use of the flag during the wake and funeral service are as follows: 1. If the casket is closed, the entire casket maybe draped with the flag. 2. If the casket is half open, the foot end of the casket maybe draped with a properly folded flag. 3. If the family does not wish the casket to be draped with the flag, it must be properly folded and placed in the panel of the open casket. 4. The blue and stars are always to be placed over the head and left shoulder of the deceased when the casket is closed and a similar position when the casket is half open, and only the stars are to show when flag is properly folded and placed in the panel of an open casket. 5. Nothing is to set on top of the flag. Finally, if a flag is to be displayed during the funeral on a pole, it is always to be placed at the left of the casket. Golf Classic Set

The American Heart Association’s 7th annual Healing Heart 5K Run/ Walk was held on Sunday, May 15th, on the property of the beautiful Pugliese Vineyards in the heart of the Long Island wine country in Cutchogue. On the windy but sunny day, close to 500 runners, walkers and spectators came out to participate

in the much anticipated event. Before the race, American Heart Association Long Island Volunteer, Consuelo Vanderbilt Costin presented awards to the top local fundraiser, Mary Grady and the East End Cardiology Team for winning the Ralph Pugliese Most Spirited Team Award. After the race

KIWANIS MEETING - The Copiague Kiwanis recenty hosted its dinner meeting on May 24th, which was enhanced with Town Supervisor Rich Schaffer and New York State Kiwanis Governor Forbes Irvine. Providing Assistance

Veteran volunteers and community organizations were asked to provide assistance as a community service at the Seventh Annual Veterans Stand Down on May 20th at the Northport VA Medical Center. The Northport VAMC sponsored this biannual event to help homeless, and at risk for homelessness, Veterans in need of assistance. Seventy Three (73) Federal, State, County and local human services agencies were present to assist Veterans in need of health, employment, financial, housing, educational, and VA Benefits. In addition, a meal and hair cut station were available as well as two local food pantries (Island Harvest & Long Island Cares) and a clothing closet to all Veterans in attendance. Furthermore, 159 Veterans in need of assistance were helped by those in attendance.

Suffolk County Legislature Presiding Officer DuWayne Gregory commended Brigadier General Thomas J. Owens II for his tremendous accomplishments and dedicated service to the New York Air National Guard.

Owens had led the 106th Rescue Wing, a unit of the New York Air National Guard stationed at Francis S. Gabreski Airport in Westhampton, since 2009. He passed the baton in April and was promoted from colonel to brigadier general. He has been

named the new assistant adjutant general for air for the New York Air National Guard. The Presiding Officer presented Owens with a proclamation at the Legislature’s May 10 General Meeting in Riverhead.

“It is my honor to congratulate Thomas Owens and thank him for his service and leadership in protecting our citizens,” said Presiding Officer Gregory. “Suffolk County has been lucky to have him as a leader, and I know he will do great things in his new position at the New York Air National Guard’s headquarters.” The 106th Rescue Wing deploys worldwide to provide combat searchand-rescue coverage for U.S. and allied forces. Manned by more than 1,000 military and civilian personnel, the unit assists with disaster relief and other state emergencies at the direction of New York’s governor and has performed numerous

rescues of commercial fishermen and recreational boaters. Owens is a graduate of Cornell University, where he received a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering. He went on to receive a master’s, and in 1985 received his commission as a distinguished graduate of the Air National Guard Academy of Military Science. A command pilot with more than 3,900 flying hours, he has commanded at the squadron, group and wing levels. “I am sincerely appreciative to have had a leader of such a high caliber at the 106th Rescue Wing in Westhampton,” said 2nd District Legislator Bridget Fleming. “I wish
