Scanlon’s Traveling Salon is run by Eileen Scanlon, a fellow New Yorker whose mission is to cultivate a community based on kindness, respect and equality. Eileen has been a NYS Licensed Cosmetologist for over 30 years, however she has experience in many other industries as well. She has worked with corporate America, nonprofits, academia and local grassroots organizations. She is well-rounded and truly one of the kindest people I have ever met.

In 2010, Eileen began volunteering, offering free haircuts to people in need. Eileen felt so overjoyed by helping others look and feel beautiful for free while working within various types of socio economic communities, that she eventually began her very own traveling salon. With its catchy slogan, Where Style Comes To You, Scanlon’s Traveling Salon now serves an abundance of people across Long Island.

She also incorporates her love of social justice and advocacy into her business practice by using only vegan products. During these trying times when only essential businesses are operating, Eileen has shifted her focus to helping the homless community, a group she feels extremely passionate for. She has been bringing homeless individuals food, clothes, blankets, shoes, etc. to help them feel loved and cared for. Although she actively helps homless people throughout Long Island, she focuses a lot in East Meadow, a community she finds to have a large homeless population. “I’m one person trying desperately to make a difference,” says Eileen. “The ‘not in my backyard’ mentality needs to be a thing of the past!” Her clients, along with local restaurants have donated food, gently used clothes, blankets, shoes and more for her to distribute. The homeless community needs attention and assistance and together we can give them the help they need. One way we can start is by donating food, clothes, shoes, blankets, socks or any other important items to Eileen for her to distribute. She visits homeless individuals twice a day and any donations received will be handed out to those in need.

disasters like fires, floods, earthquakes, and tornados. Making sure your house is a secure and resilient structure is critical no matter where you live, as global warming has altered the climates and weather events of many

regions. Fortunately, thanks to advances in design and innovative materials, building a stronger, disaster-proof home is possible. An alternative to traditional wood-framing, Nudura insulated concrete forms are an excellent option many engineers and designers are turning to. The steelreinforced solid concrete cores range from four to 12 inches, providing far superior strength and safety compared to wood. Meanwhile the nontoxic, fire-retardant expanded polystyrene foam provides a fire protection rating of up to four hours. Homes built with these ICFs are proven to survive natural disasters — houses that faced Hurricane Michael in Florida and Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans are still standing. ICFs even offer wind resistance of up to 250 mph (402 kph), equivalent to an F4 tornado.

Homes that use ICF construction have other added benefits, including enhanced insulation for lower energy bills, a reduced carbon footprint, and improved ventilation for better indoor air quality and lower susceptibility to mold.

Red-winged blackbirds, yellowrumped warblers, American robins, and chipping sparrows are among the most commonly seen birds in North America. Making a backyard hospitable to birds can increase the chances for sightings and hearing their sweet songs. Installing a bird bath can be a step in the right direction. Bird baths can make yards more attractive to birds. Birds

require a supply of fresh, clean water for drinking and bathing. By setting up a bath, homeowners can attract not only seed-loving birds, but those that don’t eat seeds and wouldn’t normally congregate around feeders, indicates All About Birds. Experts surmise that birds may bathe to maintain their feathers. Not all bird baths are constructed in the same fashion. Many bird baths sold in stores are better suited for decoration than for serving as functional baths. Another way to ensure the bath will be used, is to keep it clean and maintained. Change the water every day or two. Rinse off the bath to remove droppings, bugs and other debris. Local nonprofit Girls on the Run Long Island will be holding its first Virtual 5K run for free on June 20, 2020 open to all who wish to participate. Traditionally a run held at Hofstra University to conclude the organization’s 10week program for girls, the Spring 5K became a virtual run in response to COVID-19 and social distancing regulations. With options to complete the 3.1 mile distance at “your place, your pace,” kids and adults alike are welcome to participate at no cost to them. By registering for the run at www.gotrlongisland. org/5k, participants will receive free downloadable goodies, such as a race bib to decorate and a finisher’s certificate. GOTR Long Island prize packs will also be raffled off, chosen from those who have registered, on June 20. Over the past few weeks, PSEG Long Island has been helping to energize our healthcare heroes by providing catered meals, snacks and sports drinks to local hospitals, nursing homes and healthcare facilities on the front lines of the coronavirus pandemic, including to the ER staff at Good Samaritan Hospital in West Islip. To date, more than 300 meals have been provided at a dozen facilities from the Hamptons to the Queens County line.
