The evening, sponsored by the Booster Club, was filled with praise for members of the track, baseball, softball and lacrosse teams for their commitment to teamwork, school and themselves. The Saga of Squeegee By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Beautiful turquoise betta seeking small, non-disruptive companion to cohabitate within fully equipped tank. Must be able to vacuum gravel and plant surfaces; windows a plus. So, some of you may be wondering how my new pal Squeegee the Snail fared. In short, not well. His stay was brief – less than a week, in fact – and quite unsuccessful. While I may have played a role in his untimely demise, I must say he didn’t seem very lively upon arrival. No matter how many times I tried to greet him {read: head-butted his shell repeatedly}, he never seemed to want to come out and play.

While disappointing, it wasn’t until my Human began depositing small “cookies” (algae wafers) into the tank for Squeegee to consume that my irritation set in. Why should this bizarre-looking golden shell of a creature have an even better menu to choose from than me? Here I was, forced to suck down my bland betta pellets, while HE had a giant wafer to inhale. Well, of course I couldn’t handle such a slight, and so, as soon as my Human would leave the room, I would knock Squeegee upside down and drag his cookie to the other side of the tank, where I would happily munch away at it. I think my Human was upset by this, as she kept muttering something about “crumbs” and what a mess I was making.

students began the process of hand sewing blankets during their club meetings. After months of hard work, they created and donated a dozen blankets to Mike’s Tykes, an organization that distributed the blankets to animal rescue shelters. For the LIFACS Challenge, the students completed an application and submitted photographs of their finished blankets as well as the thank you letter they received from the Mike’s Tykes organization. As the grand prize winner, the club earned a $100 cash prize which they put towards a pizza party and donated the remaining

funds to the Copiague Middle School Builders Club, a community servicebased student club that contributed the money to a charitable cause. “I am not only proud of their hard work, but I am proud of the fact that they chose to donate the rest of the money,” said Barteldt. “It is a selﬂess act.” The district congratulates the following club members: Robert Fernandez, Darlene Ferreira, Mgim Gousse, Tatiana Meneses, Henry Raber, Jordan Reich, Marianny Santana, Natalie Santos, Angelica Tomczky and Tiandra Wint.

Painting Like Pollock A select group of 35 Susan E. Wiley Elementary School students in the Copiague School District participated in an arts-ineducation program that allowed them to explore art through visual examples and a hands-on project, led by children’s art book author and painter Joyce Raimondo. Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone and other officials announced Tuesday that the county’s half marathon has been designated as international and national championships for the intellectually disabled. The Catholic Health Services Suffolk County Marathon, Half Marathon and newly added 5K will take place October 30th, starting and ending in the village of Patchogue. “We are pleased that our race will serve as an opportunity for all athletes to demonstrate their skills,” County Executive Bellone said. “An intellectual disability should never be a barrier to those wanting to enjoy participating in sports. We are thrilled that we will serve as a host to these two championships.”

The International Sports Federation for Persons with Intellectual Disability, known as INAS, has sanctioned the Suffolk Half Marathon as an international championship, and Athletes Without Limits has designated the race as its first-ever national championship. Barry Holman, chairman of the board for Athletes Without Limits, said, “Athletes Without Limits and INAS are honored and excited to award the Suffolk County Half Marathon the US National Championship for athletes with an intellectual disability. We know the Suffolk County government and community are going to put on a fantastic event that will showcase the drive, talents and achievements of runners with an intellectual

disability from the US and internationally.’’ Dr. Catherine Caronia, Chair of Pediatrics, and Dr. Sarita Duchatelier, Director of Pediatric Neurology, both at Good Samaritan Hospital, praised the opportunity for intellectually disabled athletes to fully participate in the event. “We see the strength in children with special needs and to whom the words “I can’t” don’t exist,” Dr. Caronia said. “At Good Samaritan Health and Medical Center we care for many children with chronic needs including those who have chronic illnesses and often are labeled as medically fragile or medically complex. For these children, as is true for all children, the ability to participate and succeed is inspiring. The ability

to lose the ‘I can’t’ from their vocabulary and turning into “I can” allows them to reach heights that they or their families otherwise would never have thought possible.
