Fine Arts Honor Society Induction

Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School recognized its finest musicians and artists during the third annual Fine Arts Honor Society Induction on May 22nd. Fourteen students were inducted into the Tri-M Music Honor Society and 14 students were inducted into the National Art Honor Society in front of administrators, board of education members, friends and family. Jennifer Pierre-Louis, Copiague School District director of fine arts and Tri-M Honor Society adviser, offered opening remarks about the hard work and dedication of the student-musicians who were nominated for induction to both their school and community. Five points of distinction – scholar, character, leadership, cooperation and service – must be possessed by these students in order to

A Detector Dog Presentation

Poetry Café After writing poems for six weeks, second-graders at Northwest Elementary School in the Amityville Union Free School District were given a forum to share their work. Teacher Franca Adams welcomed parents to the Adams Family Poetry Café on May 12th. To simulate

a real-life poetry reading, the room was illuminated with battery-powered candles and guests were encouraged to snap their fingers instead of applauding. After a group poetry reading, children came up one by one to read a piece. Ms. Adams said that each

student wrote about two dozen poems during the poetry unit using various techniques. Everyone selected a favorite piece to share at the poetry café with topics ranging from watermelons to dogs to monster trucks.

Making Memories with Mom Kindergartners at Great Neck Road Elementary School in the Copiague School District recognized the special ladies in their lives with a Mother’s Day celebration on May 11st. Handcrafted bags

decorated with messages of love were filled with photo albums showcasing their first year in school. Paper bouquets of flowers and messages about their special person were presented to each of the

attendees. After enjoying snacks together, the kindergartners showcased their vocal skills with three different songs about Mother’s Day.

Science Symposium Celebrating the notable accomplishments of the science students at Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School, the Copiague School District held its third annual 20162017 science research symposium on May 18th. District administrators, board of education members, representatives from the Town of Babylon, members of the science department and invited guests gathered to recognize the hard work, determination and perseverance of the students currently enrolled in the independent science research program, the advanced science research program and the introduction to science research program. “You have all worked a tremendous amount of hours with teachers who have fostered your love of science enough

to do this work outside of the classroom,” said Copiague School District Superintendent of Schools Dr. Kathleen Bannon. “Congratulations to all of the recognition you have brought to yourselves and your school for your dedication and perseverance.” Seven Copiague science research students presented a brief overview of their projects, many of which have garnered numerous awards throughout the school year. Projects were on display for a poster presentation walk following the ceremony, giving attendees an opportunity to speak with the students firsthand about their research. Each student in the program was presented a certificate by Walter G. O’Connell Copiague science chairperson Renee Locker in recognition of

their accomplishments this school year. Raising the Flag There are many Memorial Day weekend traditions that people enjoy. Most of them tend to involve barbecues and beaches, bathing suits and sunbathing. Few take the time to truly appreciate the meaning of the holiday itself. I’ve written in the past of attending the annual service which takes place at Calverton National Cemetery, a mere two hours taken out of the weekend to pay respects to those who have come before us and sacrificed so much for this nation. This brought to mind another, perhaps less traditional, “ceremony” which my grandfather and great uncle used to enact each Memorial Day, and then again at Labor Day. Both veterans themselves, they had held on to their service uniforms and, ill-fitting as they were, would dig them out and don bits and pieces of them each year to take part in

the annual “flag raising” in my grandfather’s backyard. For as long as I can remember, there stood a flagpole at one end of the lush green lawn, and from that pole hung Old Glory, proudly waving in the wind, for the entire summer. My grandfather and uncle would unfurl this flag each May and, with a mix of reverence and humor as they paraded in their snug jackets and trousers, would carefully raise it – and then, salute proudly. Come September, this same succession of events would take place in reverse, and the flag would be carefully put away for another season. As a child, I can’t say I truly understood what was going on, nor did I appreciate the significance of the ordeal. Sure, there was a bit of tonguein-cheek humor to go along with the solemnity; but make no mistake; they took it all very seriously. Thankfully, there are

pictures from a few of these ceremonies… along with the memories to last a lifetime. Last summer, as my grandparents’ house stood empty for the first time in 56 years, a “For Sale” sign staked on the front lawn, the family gathered one late spring afternoon to begin the process of going through belongings. The ceremonies of days gone by a distant memory at this point, a somewhat tattered flag still hung from the pole. Inspired, the “children” decided to raise a brand new flag, one last time, in honor of my grandfather, and all the wonderful summers spent in that backyard. As for the old flag, the last one my grandfather had hung, I kept it. And each time I drive by the old house, now filled with a new couple starting their lives, I look to see if the old flagpole still stands. It does, and the flag remains.

Teachers at Park Avenue Memorial Elementary School have not only embraced the Amityville Union Free School District’s new initiatives in literacy instruction and technology, but are using the programs together to provide students with engaging learning experiences. Fifth-grade teachers Amy Stein and Paul Grasso are using Google Classroom and Chromebooks to support Reader’s and Writer’s Workshop through Columbia University Teachers College. The literacy program, implemented in the elementary schools and middle school, offers a more personalized approached to reading and writing instruction. Ms. Stein and Mr. Grasso recently taught a unit on immigration, which is part of the United States history-focused fifth-grade social studies curriculum. The teachers used Google Classroom to share videos and documents about Ellis Island, Angel Island and Mexican immigration with students, who were able to view these using the class set of Chromebooks. Through Writer’s Workshop, students completed several writing assignments using evidence from these materials to support their arguments or by
