Medical Challenge A team of students from Amityville Memorial High School earned a monetary prize in Northwell Health’s 2019 Spark! Challenge. For the third consecutive year, students were invited by Northwell to explore careers in the STEM and medical fields. Amityville students were given a unique

opportunity to preview clinical and nonclinical career paths in the hospital through practical and engaging encounters with professionals in the field. One group visited the department of radiation medicine in which they learned about radiation treatments. The second group of students

explored a variety of career scenarios and simulations in infection control, material management, environment services, finance, accounting and project management. In April, students had to present their findings to a panel of top executives from Northwell Health. At the competition,

The Long Island B.A.C.A. Chapter had their 100 Mile Ride Event on Saturday, May 18, 2019. Thousands of B.A.C.A. members from around the world participated in this event in various countries and states on the same day! They raised awareness of child abuse and of the services they provide for abused children all over the world.

If you are interested in becoming a B.A.C.A. member you must meet certain requirements. Some requirements are that you have a desire to help abused children, you have regular access to a motorcycle, you are 18 years or older, you can pass an NCIC fingerprint check and you can attend monthly meetings and Chapter events (their meetings are held the second Sunday of every month at the American Legion Hall in Bohemia at 9:00AM unless it’s a holiday).

‘Doctors’ Nurse Teddy Bears In an effort to alleviate the fear of hospitals and doctors, kindergartners got hands-on as they played the role of caregivers during a teddy bear clinic on May 7. Representatives from Good Samaritan Hospital in West Islip visited with students at Great Neck Road Elementary School in the Copiague School District to teach them about seatbelt, helmet and

bike safety and how to care for injuries by practicing on their own stuffed animals from home. The class learned about the importance of injury prevention and how to keep safe in the car. Using an egg, the students had a chance to see what could happen during sporting and other activities if they don’t wear a helmet. During the hands-

on portion of the educational program, the kindergartners became the doctor as they took care of their stuffed animals. After they applied bandages to their wounds and aftercare instructions to their stuffed friends, the students nursed them back to health with plenty of hugs.

National Circus Project Fifth grade students of Alleghany Avenue Elementary School in the Lindenhurst Union Free School District recently took part in the National Circus Project’s Circus Week as an extension of the school’s physical education program.

National Circus Project professionals, Bert Blague and Keith Leaf, worked with the students throughout the week and prepared them for a culminating performance in which they would demonstrate the skills taught. The fifth

graders practiced circus skills such as walking on stilts, spinning plates and frames, and juggling diablos and devil sticks. They were able to fine tune their hand-eye coordination and motor skills while having fun.

Teachers Awards The 43rd annual Teachers’ Association of Lindenhurst awards ceremony was held on May 20 at Lindenhurst High School. Teachers selected one student from each grade level in every school for recognition. Nominees were selected based upon their levels of responsibility, leadership and citizenship as well as their enthusiasm for education and the academic efforts. The audience enjoyed a show by the Lindenhurst

performing group Odyssey and watched a video in which students shared what they believe is the “body part that helps build a good person,” whether a helping hand or a kind heart. The video reflected the theme, “Building Education From the Ground Up.” The members of the Lindenhurst Buildings and Grounds department were this year’s recipients of “The Friends of Education Award.” The department was recognized for their

outstanding contributions to the students of the district. The Geraldine Cuneo Scholarship was awarded to Rebecka Verzeni-Placa; the Teachers’ Association of Lindenhurst Scholarship was bestowed upon Olivia Schwab; the Joseph Pozowicz Scholarship was given to Jacqueline Rattigan; and the John Cannestraro Scholarship was awarded to Felipe Rodas.

Running It Foward Suffolk Federal’s Senior Vice President of Information Technology and extreme distance marathon runner Eva Casale heightened awareness and raised over $30,000 in support of veterans. Eva completed seven marathons, with extra stops amounting to more than 192 miles, over the course of seven days. Each day’s marathon focused on honoring local servicemen killed in action and was linked to the communities they called home. In total, the team made more than 139 stops and delivered over 300 flowers at Points of Honor throughout Long Island. The Team ended this year’s journey at the Copiague Fire Department.

“This was a heartfelt running tour of over 192

miles which enabled me to utilize my passion for running to bring Long Islanders together to support programs and services for veterans and to acknowledge how much ‘Every Veteran is Appreciated,’” explained Casale. “We were excited that our journey concluded in May during National Military Appreciation Month to further support the mission of honoring and acknowledging those who have made the ultimate sacrifice to defend our country and to ensure that we never forget.” Suffolk Federal once again supported Eva’s mission by serving as lead sponsor, a commitment which further strengthens the Suffolk Federal mission to support Long

Island’s residents and local veterans. During the Closing Ceremony, Suffolk Federal presented Eva with a check for $15,000 and officially announced that the Suffolk Federal branches raised an additional $4,700. “It is an honor to support Eva with her efforts to raise funds and awareness for the brave men and women who have served our country and have sacrificed so much to defend our freedom. At Suffolk Federal, we feel that it is our responsibility to show the same dedication and commitment to our veterans and their families that they have shown to serving our country,” explained Ralph D. Spencer Jr., Suffolk Federal’s President & CEO who is also a United States Air Force Veteran.

Science Students Success Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School celebrated the many successes of its science research students during the fifth annual science symposium held in the school’s cafeteria on May 16. Invited guests, district administrators, board of education members, Town of Babylon officials and local members of the science community gathered at the symposium to recognize the students’ accomplishments. “[Almost 10 years ago], we had the idea we should have a science research program; we knew we had science students walking through our halls who could achieve great things in science,” said Copiague School District Superintendent of Schools Dr. Kathleen Bannon. “We had a germ of an idea to start the science research program; that

was nurtured by [science research teachers] Mrs. Locker and Dr. Lecesse. They took that idea and grew it into what you see today.” Research students – from the introduction to research, independent and advanced research classes – had the opportunity to showcase their project during a poster presentation walk before and after the symposium, allowing attendees an opportunity to speak with the students about their projects. Thirteen science research students presented a brief overview of 10 different projects to the audience, many of which have garnered notable awards throughout the school year. “The research and recognition you receive at competitive events speaks to the quality

and timeliness of your projects,” said Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School Principal Joseph Agosta. “Your successes also speak to the support and guidance you receive from your mentors both at the Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School and the variety of institutions with which you collaborate. We celebrate the scientific knowledge of our outstanding students today. These intellectual powerhouses have demonstrated that they can recognize problems, understand experimental methods, organize and interpret data, understand how data relates to the solution of a problem, plan experiments and test hypotheses and make generalizations and assumptions. These are the students that will change the world.”

MUSEUM TOUR - Copiague Middle School’s eighth grade studio art class visited the Brooklyn Museum on May 15 with art teachers Travis White and Maria Ostrofsky. The students experienced the Inside the Artist’s Studio tour, where they discussed and analyzed a number of works of art. The museum’s educator spoke to the class about the works viewed and the students answered questions with creative responses. They CONCERT HALL 2 - Madeline Shingleton, a seventh grader at Edmund W.
