During its May 9th regular business meeting, the board of education and central administration showed a short video of fourth-graders in Maria Shanahan’s class at Susan E. Wiley Elementary School using their oneto-one laptops. Through the grant, the district was also able to purchase two new trombones, a tuba and a trumpet for students

in the music program. Two elementary studentmusicians were present at the meeting to accept and thank Kari Stirnweis, human resources director at SupplyHouse, for the new instruments. To show their gratitude, the board of education and Superintendent of Schools Dr. Kathleen Bannon presented Stirnweis with a plaque and an Unsung Hero Award.

Two-rrific Teamwork Working in pairs, students in Megan Moore and Kate Castellano’s fourth-grade class at Deauville Gardens West Elementary School in the Copiague School District taught first-graders in Samantha O’Neill and Brianna O’Connor’s class how to create, compare and contrast double bubble maps on ThinkPad Chromebooks. Prior to the lesson, fourth-graders worked with their teachers to create double bubble maps

of their own. During the process, they developed their skills using the computer program and learned to create short cuts using copy and paste. With their new knowledge, the fourthgraders paired up with a first-grader to help guide him or her through the process of making a double bubble map. Together, they completed a compare and contrast worksheet with information about themselves. The firstgraders learned how to

change the size of the circles, add lines and create a textbox. Once the assignments are complete, students will present their finished bubble map to their peers. “We showed the fourthgraders how to create the double bubble map first, which motivated them because they knew they would eventually be teaching it to someone else,” said Moore. “It also helped them to organize their thoughts to be able to teach the younger kids.”

Following months of hard work, ninth-grade students in Jules Goeke’s STEM Explorations class at Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School ﬂew their handmade wooden airplanes. Working in pairs, the ninth-graders constructed airplanes using balsa wood, glue and Saran

wrap. During the ﬂight experiment, students took turns launching their planes. Powered by the rubber bands, they used an electric rubber band winder to turn the propellers between 250-400 rotations. The airplanes soared through the air and suspended for approximately 10-15

seconds. As a new course offered at the high school, the STEM Explorations halfcredit class encourages students to explore the concepts of science, technology, engineering and math through projectbased learning.

Scientific Excellence Four science-minded students from Copiague Middle School were recognized by the Town of Babylon for placing among the top students who entered the Babylon Covantage EcoTech Scholarship Contest during a special award presentation held at Babylon Town Hall, on May 7th. Under the advisement of CMS science chairperson Dr. Daniel Leccese, students submitted an energy or environmentalbased science project, through which they carried out an experiment and wrote a detailed scientific paper explaining their procedure and conclusion.

Seventh-grader Sophia Bright placed second among all entrants and earned a $750 scholarship for her science research project, “Is a Geothermal Heating/Cooling System an Effective Alternative for Homeowners?” Additionally, seventhgrade student Dylan Bedell earned a $300 scholarship and finished in fourth place for his project, “Does a Solar Panel Produce More Electricity When Function Underwater or in Regular Conditions Above Water?” Eighth-grader Marvin Pineda’s project, “What are Economically Friendly and Efficient Solutions to Coastal Erosion” earned him sixth place and a prize

While the calendar may technically still say spring for almost another month, the approach of Memorial Day weekend signals summer on the horizon. As thousands of Long Islanders head to the beach to enjoy the sun, surf and sand, we reﬂect on the first five months of the year… how has your 2016 been so far? Is it headed in the right direction? Are there still goals left to attain? What

does the remainder of the year hold in store? Of course, we can only predict so much, direct our fate to a degree; but, with that, our actions – or inaction, as the case may be – are what set the precedence for how our days will unfold. A little positive momentum goes a long way in determining the course of weeks, months, even entire years. One small step in the right direction is all it takes to turn things around. And with that, spring is the perfect time to look forward, that season of rebirth and growth, of blossoming ﬂowers and greening grass, of eggs hatching and bunnies

frolicking, of pools opening and bathing suits and ﬂip ﬂops seeing the light of day. Speaking of, those late afternoons and early evenings of golden sunlight do wonders for the psyche – how nice to leave work and still have that sunset glow to drive home by. And so we turn the page on May, look ahead to June and all that summer beckons. We dust off the remnants of the past, and gaze forward into the great unknown, full of anticipation and promise and excitement in the hope that tomorrow will be a better day. Here’s to 2016 and molding it into something memorable!
