Town of Babylon Deputy Supervisor Tony Martinez recently announced the winners of the 2017 Babylon Covantage EcoTech scholarships at the Town’s annual Earth Day Celebration, where 11th grader Brittany Faustin of Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School was awarded the top prize of $1,000 in scholarship money. Brittany’s project examined the effectiveness of the antibacterial activity of silver nanoparticles on the growth of Aspergillus niger, commonly known as black mold. She was commended by Deputy Supervisor Martinez, as well as other elected officials and representatives including Councilwoman Jackie Gordon, Councilman Tom Donnelly, Suffolk County Presiding Officer DuWayne Gregory, and Town Special Assistant Terence McSweeney. In addition, Deputy Supervisor Martinez presented a Special Recognition Award to Renee Locker, Science Department Chair at Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School, for overseeing the highest number of project submissions and highest percentage of winning projects. The Babylon Covantage EcoTech scholarship contest is a public/private partnership between the Town and Covanta Energy, which operates the energy-from-waste facility in West Babylon. The program is designed to encourage students who are studying environmental science to explore areas related to renewable energy sources, greenhouse gas reduction, alternative building materials, or any other means to mitigate climate

Memorial Day weekend is upon us and, just like that, the unofficial start to summer beckons. Swimsuits will be unearthed from the back of closets, beach passes affixed to car windows, and bags packed with sunscreen and towels as the great majority of Long Islanders head to one of our local beaches to celebrate the season. For the last seven or so years, I have been attending the Jones Beach Air Show, taking in the breathtaking aerodynamics of the U.S. Navy Blue Angels and the U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds on alternate years. It doesn’t matter how many shows – and pre-show arrivals – I have witnessed; it just never gets old. There is something incredible about witnessing these planes in flight, soaring against the sky in perfect formation.
Of course, Memorial Day weekend is only the beginning, and the hope is that there will be plenty more beautiful beach weekends to enjoy throughout the next several months, although, doesn’t it seem as though the nicest days are reserved for those spent inside the office staring at a computer screen? There is just no predicting Mother Nature, so best to take advantage of whatever rays of sunshine you can as soon as they begin to peek through. Speaking of unpredictable weather, I currently have tickets to about seven or eight concerts at the Jones Beach Theatre this year; fingers crossed that at least a few will be enjoyed under a clear summer sky, sans torrential downpour, lightning storm or any other inclement conditions. While none of my shows have ever been cancelled, there have

been several that pushed the boundaries. Just last summer, in fact, I found myself pondering just how “waterproof,” in fact, my phone was, and whether it was advisable to continue videoing the performance in front of me as sheets of rain streamed down around me. {The answers, in case you were wondering, were: A) not quite as waterproof as expected, and B) not so advisable.} So, enjoy your weekend, whatever it is you choose to do to usher in the summer season. Although the calendar indicates there’s still one month to go, the collective mindset seems to say there’s no need to wait. So slather on that sunscreen, grab your beach bag and dig your toes into the sand as the ocean caresses your feet. Just keep an eye on the sky for any storm clouds approaching.

Thanks for Moms Smiles from ear to ear could be found on the faces of prekindergarten students at Northeast Elementary School in the Amityville Union Free School District and
their mothers who came together on May twelfth. The school hosted its annual Mother’s Day Tea, which began with the students performing songs for their special
guests including “Mommy, Mommy, I Love You Mommy,” “You’re My Mom,” “If I Had a Little Red Box,” “L.O.V.E.” and “Skidamarink.” Children and their mothers then
shared iced tea, juice and cookies at tables draped in colorful cloths. The students dressed up for the occasion with the boys in shirts and ties and girls in dresses. They
presented handmade gifts to their mothers such as drawings, picture frames, flower crafts, cards and necklaces. Said teacher Barbara Perez, “It was a beautiful day

Preventing Bullying with Art Two students from Park Avenue Memorial Elementary School in the Amityville Union Free School District were recognized by Child Abuse Prevention Services for their efforts to fight bullying through art. Fourth-graders Tiffany
Asbell and Hilary Escobar Mejia took part in the CAPS bullying prevention poster contest, and were both awarded honorable mention. The theme of Tiffany’s poster was “Be sure to taste your words before you spit them out,” and the slogan for Hilary’s
piece was “Stop the bullying. Let’s be friends.” The students created the posters after participating in anti-bullying workshop at the school, presented by CAPS, as part of Park Avenue’s character education program.
