Humanitarian Efforts College on May 3rd. Each student was recognized with a citation from an elected official and a certificate from the Jewish Community Relations Council of Long Island. The students listened to the story of survival from a Holocaust survivor, Elizabeth Heyn, whom they were able to meet after the ceremony. All three students are active members of various community clubs

and activities in the high school. Collado is a member of the One Mind Club, Tree Huggers, Global Ambassadors and BUTY (Bringing Unity Through Youth Club). Espinoza has played a key role in the successful implementation of two of the school’s newest clubs: the Public Relations Club and Global Ambassadors. Rolle is a member of Key Club and One Mind Club.

Construction is expected to continue through December 2019. Once the addition is open, the existing gymnasium will be converted into a music suite, and other upgrades to the original building will take place. Once all work is complete, the ninth grade will move to the high school. The timeline for the addition to Northwest Elementary School has been advanced so the project will be completed at the same time as the high school expansion. The plan is to have an expedited review with the State Education Department this summer and award bids by January 2019, with the hope of starting construction a

few months later. Capital improvements to Park Avenue will begin this summer, which includes air conditioning the auditorium and cafeteria. The replacement of windows at Edmund W. Miles Middle School will begin in August and be completed by December. In another presentation, Dr. Lois Etzel, the assistant superintendent for curriculum and instruction, presented recommendations from the nine subcommittees of the district’s Curriculum Advisory Council. The board of education adopted three new initiatives. Next year, a cursive writing program will be added for students in first through third grades, then be expanded to fourth grade the following year and fifth grade a year after. Oldies but Goodies used to enact each Memorial Day, and then again at Labor Day. Both veterans themselves, they had held on to their service uniforms and, ill-fitting as they were, would dig them out and don bits and pieces of them each year to take part in the annual “flag raising” in my grandfather’s backyard. For as long as I can remember, there stood a flagpole at one end of the lush green lawn, and from that pole hung Old Glory, proudly waving in the wind, for the entire summer. My grandfather and uncle would unfurl this flag each May and, with a mix of reverence and humor as they paraded in their snug jackets and trousers, would carefully raise it – and then, salute proudly. Come September, this same succession of events would take place in reverse, and the flag would be carefully stored away for another season. As a child, I can’t say I truly understood what was going on, nor did I appreciate the significance of the ordeal. Sure, there was a bit of tongue-in-

This week, I thought I’d throw it back to a classic from the archives, a column which received quite a bit of positive feedback leading up to last year’s Memorial Day. Reﬂecting on past traditions always tends to get the creative juices ﬂowing, so to speak, and memories of family gatherings are no exception… There are many Memorial Day weekend traditions that people enjoy. Most of them tend to involve barbecues and beaches, bathing suits and sunbathing. Few take the time to truly appreciate the meaning of the holiday itself. I’ve written in the past of attending the annual service which takes place at Calverton National Cemetery, a mere two hours of the weekend designated to pay respects to those who have come before us and sacrificed so much for this nation. Thankfully, there are pictures from a few of these ceremonies… along with the memories to last a lifetime. Last summer, as my grandparents’ house stood empty for the first time in 56 years, a “For Sale” sign staked on the front lawn, the family gathered one late spring afternoon to begin the process of going through belongings. The ceremonies of days gone by a distant memory at this point, a somewhat tattered flag still hung from the pole. Inspired, the “children” decided to raise a brand new flag, one last time, in honor of my grandfather, and all the wonderful summers spent in that backyard. As for the old flag, the last one my grandfather had hung, I kept it. And each time I drive by the old house, now filled with a new couple just beginning their lives, I look to see if the old flagpole still stands. It does, and the flag remains.

kindergarten through sixth grade will benefit from a STEAM enrichment program, focusing on science, technology, engineering, the arts and math. A puberty awareness program is being added at Park Avenue through the physical education department. There will be separate classes for girls and boys. Next year, the program will be offered to fifth- and sixth-grade students, then will be a fifth-grade program each subsequent year.

Volunteers are trained to help seniors living in nursing homes or assisted living facilities understand their rights and help them advocate for themselves. Lastly, volunteers are needed for their Health Insurance Counseling Program. Volunteers inform seniors about Medicare and healthcare options to achieve a higher quality of life. Lisa Gatti is the CEO & Founder of PalO-Mine Equestrian, Inc., a comprehensive therapeutic equine program that uses horses to facilitate growth, learning and healing for individuals with disabilities and for other vulnerable populations. Through persistence, hard work and a passion to serve others, Lisa opened Pal-O-Mine in 1995 as a 501(C)(3) non-profit. Pal-O-Mine grew from having two programs, eight horses and 80 students per week to 11 programs, 25 horses and 400 students per week - and they continue to grow today! Individuals of all ages are welcome to take part in the programs they offer. They operate with five full-time employees, 35 independent contractors and 80 volunteers a week. Their riding instructors have experience with the following diagnoses: Autism Spectrum Disorders, Anxiety Disorders, Sensory Processing Disorder, Attention Deficit Disorder, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Neurological Disorders, Cerebral Palsy, Traumatic Brain Injury, Multiple Sclerosis, Down Syndrome, Spina Bifida, Genetic Disorders and Emotional Disturbances. Every day, they have a different school drop off children at their location to benefit from their organization; they also offer group programs, individual lessons, corporate workshops and a program

Her public and large scale sculptures have been exhibited through the Patchogue Arts Council PAC MAC Festival (2014, 2015) Patchogue Arts on Terry Festival (2016) and National Endowment for the Arts grant for “Arts Engagement in American Communities” with Dowling College; Sculptural Interactions at Idle Hour (2015). Giacummos’ professional experiences range from arts education, higher

education, curriculum building, curatorial work, museum management, gallery management, exhibition direction, non-profit building, arts activism, fundraising and international program development for artists and students. that helped achieve the designation. The school created a kindness rock garden in the fall, and everyone in the school was invited to paint a rock with an inspirational message. A Black History Month student celebration in February emphasized the appreciation of diversity through song, dance, poetry and artwork. Recently, students created trees of respect in the cafeteria. They wrote messages on paper leaves about ways they can show respect and foster kindness within the school such as “Smile to make someone’s day,” “Congratulate people on their achievements” and “Say thank you!” The school participates in Olweus Bully Prevention, a research-based program that is designed to improve peer relations and make schools safer. It includes schoolwide rules and consequences, classroom level meetings

to build community, individual interventions for students who bully or are bullied along with parental involvement, and community efforts to increase support of antibullying messages and strategies. All students also signed a Resolution of Respect. Six students are members of the No Place for Hate committee including seventh-graders Nataly Carbajal and Samantha Molino, eighthgraders Kayla Marrero and Gianely McCatty and ninth-graders Vanessa Garcia and Amber Palmer. They were chosen for their exemplary character and embodying the values of a No Place for Hate school. They will attend the AntiDefamation League’s No Place for Hate Recognition Ceremony on May 25th at the Sheraton Hotel in Manhattan.

Essential Functions: • Respond to requests for technical assistance by telephone and other channels. • Provide technical expertise to security professionals in the areas of installation, troubleshooting, upgrade and optimization of security hardware and software products. • Determine the best solution for each inquiry, issue or request by applying and / or adapting existing knowledge and best practices. • Utilize existing support tools, techniques and methodology. • Participate in the capture of new knowledge and solutions. • Document and track each customer interaction from initial contact through closure. Required Qualifications and Skills: • Experience in alarm systems, security products, locking products, access control or video. • Some experience in help desk, technical support, customer service or telephone support is desirable. • Good computer literacy, including MS Windows-based systems and basic networking experience (i.e. understanding of routers, switches, TCP/IP, etc.) • Extremely detail oriented, possess a high sense of urgency and demonstrate world class follow through skills. • Customer service oriented, ‘people person’ with great communication skills (verbal and written). • ‘Team Player’ with ability to work both individually and collaboratively. • Able to work on site within the hours of 8:30 AM to 8:00 PM, Monday through Friday (full 8.5 hour shifts). • Fluency in Spanish is a plus, although not required.
