Hospital How Memorial Day And Veterans Association Day Differ From Each Other Offers Scholarship The Nassau-Suffolk Hospital Council (NSHC) announces a $2,000 scholarship for college juniors/seniors or post graduate students who are studying Journalism, Marketing/ Communications, or Healthcare Administration. (The scholarship is not for clinical-based study.) The Ann Marie Brown Memorial Scholarship honors the late Ann Marie Brown, who served as vice president for government and public relations for the Hospital Council from 1983 to 1993. The scholarship is administered by the Hospital Council’s Communications Committee. Filing deadline is June 15, 2020. Memorial Day weekend as the unofficial start of summer, the weekend should not be celebrated without also pausing to reﬂect on and recognize the military personnel who lost their lives in defense of freedom and the American way of life. Veterans Day is celebrated annually on November 11 and recognizes all men and women who have served in the military. Veterans Day coincides with Remembrance Day, which is a celebrated by the Commonwealth of

Nations, an association of 53 member states with connections to the British Empire. Though Veterans Day and Remembrance Day are each celebrated on November 11, the latter recognizes armed forces members who died in the line of duty, making it more similar to Memorial Day than Veterans Day. It’s not uncommon for people to recognize fallen soldiers on Veterans Day, but many use the holiday to express their appreciation to existing veterans.

The Charity of The Month for May is: Guardians of Rescue will still go out and put themselves at risk to get food for their pets. However, Paws of War will at times arrive at their homes with no warning, knock on their door and tell them that they have some items to drop off for them. “You always see that tear in their eye” says Robert. “That someone actually cares enough to come to their home and bring them something is very special.” A lot of these veterans suffered for many years, all of which now have lifelong disabilities due to their service to our country. Paws of War feels that at the very least they can bring them pet food to give them a helping hand during these tough times. Additionally, Paws of War has partnered with Cambridge Catering, who is providing hot cooked meals free of charge to our veterans. Hank, a Smithtown resident and veteran, was someone that Paws of War helped. When they arrived at his home, they noticed a his two very proud flags were destroyed. They handed off the pet food and trays of hot food that Cambridge Catering has provided, but they didn’t stop there. They then went to the hardware store and purchased everything to fix and replace his flags. Guardians of Rescue and Paws of War can both use your support so they can continue to help others. Guardians of Rescue is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. Their mission is to facilitate and foster programs and activities that further the unique benefits of interaction between people and animals. We are all aware of the toll that this pandemic is having on people, yet the impacts are being felt beyond humans. Animals are also being impacted in numerous ways by this situation. Guardians of Rescue has been dealing with the Covid Crisis in many different ways, such as helping people feed their pets and taking on the responsibility to care for homeless animals. They have even stepped out of their realm of helping animals to assist seniors during these trying times. They are overwhelmed by the amount of assistance needed and their phones are ringing non-stop. So many people have had their employment impacted by the virus, therefore donations have been down. This makes it difficult for them to continue feeding the animals, building doghouses, taking in new rescues and trying to cover all their expenses. “The pandemic has created a host of problem for the animals,” says Robert Misseri, President of this organization. “I hope that we can make it through this difficult time, so that we can continue to help the animals in need.” Robert is also the President of Paws of War, another non-profit right here on Long Island. This organization trains and places shelter dogs to serve and provide independence to our U.S. military veterans that suffer from the emotional effects of war. In turn, each veteran can experience the therapeutic and unconditional love only a companion animal can bring. Throughout this pandemic, they have been tending to the most at risk veterans. They find that their older senior veterans typically are very prideful and refuse to ask for any handouts. Many live alone and

The American Cancer Society’s cadre of 1.5 million dedicated volunteers are not only helping fight cancer but using their skills in unique ways to help those affected by Coronavirus. Nathan Levinton is a career counselor for the National Guard. His passion for music has led to a part time job as a DJ, to which he regularly volunteers to play music in support of American Cancer Society events such as Making Strides Against Breast Cancer and Relay For Life. These days, the Medford resident has a new way of giving back to the community through his hobby as a 3D printer. When the COVID-19 crisis began and with supplies in demand, Nathan decided to utilize his resources to create face shields for medical professionals and first responders. The response has been so great that he is finding it hard to keep up. He’s already donated 170 face shields and 150 mask extenders plus has another 6-dozen ready for use in Suffolk county. He’s working alone and

in tandem with a Long Island wide network of creators who are making supplies for our first responders. “Nathan is a volunteer hero in my mind,” says Brittany Lawton, a community development manager at the Society. “When Gov. Cuomo asked for ingenuity, Nathan took the lead in helping others. His talent motivates walkers at Jones Beach each October during Making Strides Against Breast Cancer, and today his talent and his commitment to service is keeping others safe. “The American Cancer Society strives to create a culture of gratitude for all volunteers,” says Marie Cimaglia, Director of Community Development on Long Island and NYC. “This National Volunteer Week, we take an extra moment to express gratitude to each and every volunteer who has joined our mission, and the mission to help us through this pandemic,” she said. Cimaglia continues by saying that during this difficult time, cancer won’t stop; and neither

will we. “Despite cancelled events, the cancer-fighting work of the Society continues,” she said. As the COVID-19 crisis grows larger every day, cancer patients – many of whom already have compromised immune systems - are more vulnerable than ever. The public is asked to stay informed during this crisis at cancer.org/coronavirus. Donations are being accepted at cancer.org/ rapidresponse. • On June 14, 1777, the Second Continental Congress proposed and passed the Flag Act of 1777. This resolution was designed to facilitate the creation of an official flag for a nation that was aiming to earn its independence from Great Britain. Memorial Day is celebrated each May to commemorate the people who died in service of the United States of America. Even though barbecues and visions of the upcoming summer weather may command much of the attention come Memorial Day weekend, the holiday really serves as a remembrance for those military members who paid the ultimate sacrifice for their country, as well as the personnel who continue to protect and serve today. Jonsey when the starving puppy was eating burnt trash outside of his camp. He took the puppy in, fed him, and the whole unit fell in love with him, which brought them joy. He named him Jonsey, and the dog grew to feel like a part of his family. Now that he will be heading back to the United States, he can’t bear to leave him behind. Stray dogs in Afghanistan have a very rough life and often times are subjected to cruelty. Desperate to bring him back home with him to live out his life and be a part of his larger family, he turned to Paws of War for assistance. The organization has a program in place that helps service members bring their dog home after being deployed to the Middle East. Being deployed to Afghanistan can be dangerous and stressful for our service members. Some of these service members rescue stray dogs and befriend them. When it’s time to head back to the United States, the last thing they can think of is leaving the dog behind to fend for itself. One soldier, Sgt. Dominick, is desperate to bring his dog, Jonsey, back home with him. “After these dogs are rescued, they develop a special bond with our service members. These dogs will not leave their side and become very attached and loyal,” explains Dori Scofield co-founder of Paws of War. “There’s no way they can leave them, so we do everything we can to help them bring the dog home with them. National Grid is warning customers to beware of a new phone scam where imposters are demanding immediate bill payment and threatening service disconnection. This latest scam, which is targeting customers already facing hardships due to COVID-19, involves callers who pretend to be National Grid representatives. They tell customers that unless payment is made within 30 minutes, their power will be shut off. The customer is then directed to call “the direct billing department to make a payment and avoid power disconnection.” The scammers use sophisticated phone systems that display National Grid on the customer’s caller ID. Additionally, the phone number customers are instructed to call closely resembles the company’s recorded messaging and phone prompt directions. These elements make it difficult to differentiate an actual National Grid call

Families Who Have A Loved One In A Nursing Home Need To Ask These Six (6) Questions Now!

The NYS Department of Health (DOH) strongly encourages nursing homes and other adult care facilities to implement communication protocols for both residents and their families during the COVID-19 pandemic including when the facility learns of a suspected or confirmed case of COVID-19. According to Governor Cuomo’s office, at least 1,064 New Yorkers have died in nursing home facilities since the onset of this Pandemic. Asking the right question and establishing effective communication is extremely important to the well-being of your loved one residing in a long-term care facility. After consultation with leading experts on nursing homes, assisted living facilities and other

long-term care facilities, AARP urges families with loved ones in nursing homes to ask these six key questions of nursing home administrators and staff. 1. Has anyone in the nursing home tested positive for COVID-19? • The NYS DOH recommends that longterm care facilities report this information; however, it is not a requirement so families must ask this question specifically. 2. What is the nursing home doing to prevent infections? • How are nursing home staff, residents and others being screened for COVID-19, especially when they leave and reenter the home? • What precautions are being required of residents, including

covering of noses and mouths when staff is in the room, and how is the nursing home helping them to comply? • Is the nursing home assigning special staff or units for the care of residents who have tested positive for Covid-19? 3. Does nursing home staff have the personal protective equipment (PPE) – such as masks, face shields, gowns, gloves—that they need to stay safe, and keep their patients safe? • Have nursing home staff been given specific training on how to use this PPE? • If not enough PPE is available, what is the plan to obtain personal protective equipment? 4. What is the nursing home doing to help residents stay connected

with their families or other loved ones during this time? • Does the nursing home help residents call their loved ones by phone or video call? • Will the nursing home set up a regular schedule for you to speak with your loved one? 5. What is the plan for the nursing home to communicate important information to both residents and families on a regular basis? • Will the nursing home be contacting you by phone or email, and when? 6. It's always the right time of year for fresh apple pie

ertain foods are synonymous with particular holidays or times of year. For example, few people can imagine celebrating Valentine’s Day without ample supplies of chocolate on hand. And what summer barbecue is complete without grilled hot dogs and hamburgers? While these foods and others are must-haves during certain times of the year, that doesn’t mean they cannot be enjoyed whenever a craving arises. Apples, and particularly apple pie, are a staple of many holiday season celebrations. But apple pie is just as delicious in March, April, May, etc., as it is during the weeks between Thanksgiving and Christmas. That’s especially true when the apples are fresh. Whether yours is a seasonal or non-seasonal craving for apple pie, be sure to satisfy it with this recipe for “French Apple Pie” from Mollie Cox Bryan’s “Mrs. Rowe’s Little Book of Southern Pies” (Ten Speed Press). FRENCH APPLE PIE

apples (preferably a tart variety)

1 recipe Plain Pie Pastry (see below)

Makes one 9-inch pie

RAISIN FILLING

1⁄4 1⁄2

cup raisins

1⁄2

teaspoon lemon juice

ICING

11⁄2

teaspoons all-purpose flour

1⁄4

11⁄2

tablespoons water

cup light corn syrup teaspoons sugar

DIRECTIONS To make the raisin filling, combine the raisins, water and lemon juice in a heavy saucepan over medium heat. Bring to a boil, then lower the heat to medium-low and cook, stirring occasionally until the raisins are plump, about 15 minutes.

Separately, combine the corn syrup, flour and sugar and mix well, then add to the raisins and continue cooking, stirring occasionally, until thick and syrupy, about 10 minutes. Remove from the heat and cool until the mixture is just warm, about 10 to 15 minutes. Preheat the oven to 400 F. Line a 9-inch pie plate with 1 rolled-out crust.

PLAIN PIE PASTRY Makes two 9-inch pie crusts cups all-purpose flour teaspoon salt cup vegetable shortening to 7 tablespoons cold milk

teaspoon ground cinnamon teaspoon ground nutmeg

teaspoons cornstarch

cup confectioners’ sugar

tablespoon butter, softened

tablespoons water

Peel the apples, cut them into thin wedges, and put them in a large bowl. Separately, combine the sugars, cinnamon, nutmeg, and cornstarch, then add to the apples and gently stir until evenly mixed.

Spread the apple mixture in the crust in an even layer, then spread the raisin filling evenly over the apples. Brush the rim of the crust with water, cover with the second rolled-out crust, seal and flute or crimp the edges, and cut a steam vent in the center. Bake for 40 to 50 minutes, until golden brown. Cool on a wire rack for 1 to 2 hours, until completely cool.

To make the icing, combine the sugar and water and mix well. Add the butter and mix until smooth. Brush over the top of the cooled pie before serving.

Sift the flour and salt into a bowl. Cut in the shortening with a pastry blender until it is the size of small peas. Sprinkle 1 tablespoon of the milk over part of the flour mixture. Gently toss with a fork and push to the side of the bowl. Sprinkle another tablespoon of milk over another dry part, toss with a fork and push to the side of the bowl. Repeat with the remaining milk until all of the flour mixture is moistened. Press the dough together to form 2 equal balls, then flatten into disks. Roll out the crusts right away, or wrap the dough tightly, smoothing out any little wrinkles or air pockets and refrigerate for up to 2 weeks. On a lightly floured surface, roll out each ball to a thickness of 1⁄8 inch. Use a light touch and handle the dough as little as possible.
