Food Bank Visit Congressman Pete King visits Long Island Cares Food Bank at its corporate office in Hauppauge. Long Island Cares was founded by the late singersongwriter Harry Chapin in 1980. Its goals are to improve food security for families and inform the general public about the causes and consequences of hunger on Long Island. Among other things Long Island Cares distributes more than 8,000,000 pounds of food via more than 590 food

pantries, soup kitchens, shelters, senior nutrition sites and day care centers throughout Nassau and Suffolk. Long Island Cares also provides nutritional meals for many needy children in various after-school programs and works closely with veterans organizations to assist needy veterans, including delivering groceries to homebound, disabled veterans. I recently had the opportunity to attend a journalism forum at The Paley Center for Media in Manhattan. Titled “The Future of Local News: Trust, Truth & The Bottom Line,” this summit brought together some of the best and the brightest in the industry to discuss what many have summarily dismissed as a dying field. I am happy to report that, after listening to several engaging panels touching on everything from politics to nonprofit upstarts to the pros and cons of social media in the information age, I came away with an even deeper sense of confidence that journalism is, in fact, here to stay. Sure, the fourth estate may have hit some bumps in the road of late; but, in essence, these

obstacles have only helped those truly reputable media outlets to gain a stronger foothold. Too much of anything is a bad thing; this is a commonly held opinion. But, to be able to harness this inﬂux of information and utilize it in such a way that is beneficial, well, that is a opportunity that should not be squandered. It may take time and research to discern what is truly valuable and accurate information, but why shouldn’t we devote that kind of effort to educating ourselves? It hardly seems a steep price to pay, in my estimation. The hope is that, as the sources of “news” multiply and morph, future generations will increasingly become experts at determining what

is reliable. Not to throw the phrase back in my day around too lightly but… back when I was in college, media was pretty much defined as print or broadcast; newspapers, magazines, television, radio. Social media was only just beginning to take off, and its potential as a legitimate source of news – breaking or otherwise – was as yet unanticipated. Fast forward to the present day, when your average elementary school student is “plugged in” to his/her own cell phone throughout the day. My, how times have changed. Regardless of whether we support this development, the fact is - it’s happening. Best to jump on board and learn to harness the power of the media. It’s here to stay.

Passion through Poetry graders. Several dozen students got on stage to share their poems, which were written on topics that evidenced their individual interests and passions. The presentation also included a video featuring Amityville students in “Just Read On,” a parody of the Aoki song “Just Hold On.” Following the poetry slam, students visited the library

and filled up bags with free books, many of which were donated by the Book Fairies. Dinner and rafﬂes followed in the cafeteria. The event was organized by librarian Lynn Cesiro with support from the Middle School Literacy Team, ELA teachers and administrators.

Babylon Town Supervisor Rich Schaffer recently attended a Copiague Chamber of Commerce meeting, where Madison Aquafredda, 9, was honored for her local civic engagement. Madison recently wrote a letter to Copiague Chamber

of Commerce president Sharon Fattoruso regarding the litter she had been seeing on the roadways and voiced her desire to get involved with her community. Sharon invited Madison to speak at the meeting about her civic concerns and stewardship.

Students and staff celebrated the written word at Edmund W. Miles Middle School in the Amityville Union Free School District, which hosted its fourth annual Poetry Slam and Literacy Night on May 1st. As guests arrived, they received booklets featuring 230 original poems written by seventh- through ninth-

Robinson, a Holocaust survivor, explained how her family was destroyed by the actions of the Nazis and how neighbors and strangers helped her family survive before they were ultimately sent to Auschwitz. The students spoke with Robinson following her lecture.
