Call for Artists The Art League of Long Island upcoming juried exhibition “It’s all about the… Light!” invites artists from Suffolk, Nassau, Brooklyn, and Queens to submit their works, in any medium, dealing with their interpretation of light. The exhibit will be on display in the Art League of Long Island’s gallery July 7th through August 5th. The deadline

to submit applications to exhibit is May 30th, 2018. The exhibition juror is Karen Levitov, Director and Curator, Paul W. Zuccaire Gallery, Staller Center for the Arts, Stony Brook University How do you interpret light in your work? The arrangement of darks and lights can create an atmosphere making the same scene

appear ominous or contemplative, violent or tranquil. Use of color can create radiant light or reﬂective light. Your work may explore the correlation of time and light: the ﬂat light of midday, the long shadows of late afternoon, the soft misty morning light, or the mysterious light of evening. Explore how the sources of light affect the subject and its

surroundings. Do you strive for the dramatic or theatrical chiaroscuro? Artificial light, natural light, reﬂective light all have their own qualities. Does your abstract work express a quality of light through your use of color, creating harmony or disharmony? Values of color create patterns of lights and darks. It’s all about the light. During lunch periods, SADD Club members sold a piece of tape for $1. Copiague Middle School Assistant Principal Michael Ferretti was chosen to be taped to the wall. been reflected upon with a degree of amusement in hindsight. At the time, however, well let’s just say there are moments when our entire eating experience seemed to be part of a rather lengthy segment of Candid Camera. There was the time, while up in Saratoga Springs one summer years ago, that our meal was interrupted by a rather persistent fly. Upon swatting said flying creature, he began a free-fall into what had been - up to that point - a rather enjoyable pasta entree of my mother’s. As she watched, horrified, the formerly agile winged critter began what appeared to be a slow dog paddle through the sauce. Both my father and I were in complete hysterics by this point. When the waiter stopped by the table to check on whether we were enjoying the meal, my mother pointed to the at this point - motionless fly and replied, “Well, I was enjoying it very much, but…” The waiter, without missing a beat, shrugged

sympathy for the ruined meal, no nothing. The customer is always right, indeed. Of course, there are times when the customer seems obliged to seat him/herself, place the order and perhaps even head back into the kitchen to cook it as well, such is the poor quality of service. On the other end of the spectrum, I’ve been witness to a waitress literally sweeping a plate out from under my friend’s poised fork, determining that she was, in fact, finished. As we sat, incredulous over this turn of events, we didn’t know whether to laugh or demand a refund. After about two hours of nursing our drinks and “contemplating” dessert, more appetizers, perhaps a breakfast course… we decided to take the check. Oddly enough, the waitress didn’t seem amused. Fast forward to this past Cinco de Mayo, a “holiday” I have never made a special point to celebrate

(different friend, same Candid Camera tendencies) decided to wait it out to dine in style at a genuine Mexican establishment on the busiest Saturday night of the year. After about an hour, we were seated. We ordered drinks, appetizers and entrees, all of which arrived in quick succession. Having already decided what we wanted for dessert, we patiently waited for the waiter to return. And waited…. And waited… Each time he passed our table, all attempts to make eye contact and ﬂag him down went unnoticed. We were, we determined, completely invisible. Nearly an hour later, a random waitress happened to glance our way. Can we order dessert from you? Certainly. Nearly another 30 minutes elapsed before our own waiter, the one who had seemingly abandoned our table, returned. Dessert? We looked at each other. We had now been in this venue for precisely four hours. Cheers, indeed.

Love My Parks NYS Senator Phil Boyle hosted his 6th annual “I Love My Park Day” event at five sites throughout the 4th Senate District this past Saturday, May 5th. Senator Boyle showed his support for all the work volunteers were accomplishing during the annual event that took place at Connetquot State Park, Heckscher State Park, Bayard Cutting

100 Years Young Dominican Village resident Yolanda Ghighone turns 100 years! Yolanda born May 2nd, 1918 in Manhattan, to Joseph & J o s e p h i n e Cantamessa. Her Family later moved to New Jersey. She met Joseph Ghignone at a dance and they wed April 26th, 1941.

They lived in Queens and later, Amityville. Yolanda worked at Bloomingdales for 25 years, retiring at 65. She enjoyed traveling with her husband and did volunteer work at Ozanum Hall and Booth Memorial Hospital. She was widowed after 63 years of marriage. Yolanda enjoys

reading and knitting. She celebrated her milestone with family & friends at a brunch at Dominican Village, where she lives. A resident since 2010 Yolanda attributes her longevity to happiness, laughter and love. Happy Birthday Yolanda and many more to come!
