Of Memories Made & Yet To Come By: Jamie Lynn Ryan As I get ready to head off to a dear friend’s graduation on this fine spring afternoon, I am reminded of a similarly lovely day 11 years ago when I donned a cap and gown to receive my BFA in Journalism from C.W. Post. The four years spent on that sprawling campus in Upper Brookville were full of fond memories… reading Leaves of Grass on the lawn in front of the Philosophy building, strolling through the Chipmunk Trail on the way to class, lounging on the Great Lawn with friends, studying in the Honors

Lounge, aimlessly wandering through the library’s book stacks... Being a commuter student, the challenge was always to assimilate into campus life, a task made much easier by my involvement in the Honors Program. Many a day was spent planning events, fundraising, working on our very own newsletter, The Athena, and networking with the best and the brightest administrators, professors and students. Perhaps the greatest benefit, though, was the lasting friendships made within the walls of that lounge, those forged on the first day of

Freshman Seminar that have endured until today, 15 years later. As a junior and senior, I was fortunate enough to serve as a Peer Mentor, leading my very own Freshman Seminar classes, and bearing witness to the next generation of blossoming friendships. Which brings me back to today, as one of those “first friends” prepares to accept a Masters Degree on the very same campus, under the big tent on the famed Great Lawn, and sets out to embark on the next stage of her career. What an exciting moment, what a memorable journey… one that, in so many ways, is just beginning.

Eagle Soars To First For the second consecutive year, Copiague Middle School’s newspaper, The Eagle, placed first in the American Scholastic Press Association’s Annual Review and Contest Award for scholastic newspapers and other publications. Ranked among intermediate schools nationwide, the Eagle newspaper received 940 out of a possible 1,000 point score for format, content, editing, creativity

and presentation. Under the advisement of Christine Barteldt, students work together to publish five papers during the school year. Featured articles in the newspaper include, club accomplishments, sports, surveys and other relevant topics middle school students and faculty members can appreciate. To commemorate their accomplishment, members of the newspaper received

an award certificate from the ASPA. While the Eagle newspaper welcomes content from all middle school students throughout the school year, the following students are active Eagle staff members: Kacey Bilardi, Ben Cascone, Amy Cruz, Eric Dixon, Colby Farraher, Robert Fernandez, Gregory Jean-Baptiste, Yana Mera, Chantece Rowe and Jezne Sosa.

Copiague Middle School eighth-graders Jackson Bright, Aleksandra Bugajczyk, Elizabeth Collado, Faith McCombs and Justine Taveras recently presented their math research at the Al Kalfus Long Island Math Fair competition. To compete in the Al Kalfus Long Island Math Fair, students were required to write a properly

cited eight to ten page math research paper on a topic of their choice and present their research in an oral presentation for a panel of judges. Beginning in October, students chose a math topic and gathered information using multiple sources. Students then took on the challenge of creating a poster board to represent and highlight the main concepts in their

research. Students and advisor Stephen Temme attended the Math Fair competition on April 24th at Hofstra University. Upon presenting their research, Jackson Bright’s “Math in Sports,” Aleksandra Bugajczky’s “Logic and Sudoku” and Elizabeth Collado’s “Theory of Relativity” received bronze medals.
