n celebration of Earth Day, members of the Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School Student Organization of Unified Leaders Adopt-A-Highway Club, along with adviser Joseph Mannix, organized a group cleanup event. This year, the Copiague VFW Warren Keer Post 9482 will host its 65th Annual Memorial Day Parade in Copiague at 10 a.m. on Monday, May 30th. Memorial Day and red poppies are a solemn reminder of all the American lives that have been sacrificed in fighting for the freedom we are fortunate enough to enjoy today. All residents are encouraged to spend a few minutes on Monday, May 30th, as the parade kicks off at 10 a.m. at Dixon Avenue and Great Neck Road. It will proceed south on Great Neck Road, stopping at each war memorial to confer a public mark of respect. There are two war memorials; a renovated WWI memorial corner at Marconi blvd just north of the railroad overpass; and the WWII and current memorial at the corner of Scudder Avenue and Great Neck Road. It will also stop at the Great Neck Road Firehouse to confer a public mark of respect at the Copiague Firefighters Memorial. At the conclusion of the parade, a memorial ceremony will be held on the steps of the Great Neck Elementary School, with the Walter G O’Connell Copiague High School Madrigal Choir performing inspiring patriotic songs. Readers have been writing in lately, inquiring as to my whereabouts, my wellbeing, my latest exploits… So I’m here, as requested, to fill you all in on my comings and goings – well, as much as one can come and go in the confines of a one-gallon aquarium, but you know… The latest bit of exciting news – potentially, anyway – is my Human’s impending purchase of a friend for me! Yes, that’s right, Buddy the Betta will soon be accompanied by the likes of a small, colorful (but not too colorful), aquatic snail. I’m thinking purple, to

complement my gorgeous aqua fins. The best part is that, in addition to having a companion for those ohso-long days when my Human leaves me to my own devices, my new little friend can also serve as a portable vacuum cleaner of sorts. With my larger residence, the maintenance can be a bit much, and I do like immaculate living quarters. I’ve even picked out a name – “Squeegee.” Oh what fun we will have together, so long as he keeps those long tentacles off my delicate fins, of course... and away from my food… and off of my favorite bedtime leaf… and, well, we’ll see how it

goes. This could be shortlived. Other than that, life in the bowl is pretty much status quo. I’m going on 15 months old, still as vibrant and beautiful (and humble) as ever, and my Human has graduated to feeding me twice a day – small portions, but still, I’ll take what I can get. It’s a good life – especially when Grammy comes to visit and makes kissy-faces at me. ‘Til next time, this is Buddy, anxiously awaiting the arrival of my new googly-eyed roommate. Following a formal interview with members of the Japan Society, she was selected to participate in this unique study abroad experience. During the three-week summer program, Motley will stay with a host family in the Tokyo metropolitan area while attending high school. She will research and experience the Japanese history and culture through educational trips to historical sites throughout the island. She will build and expand networks with current leaders from various industries as well as with program alumni. “I am so excited to be pursing something I am very passionate about,” said Motley. Following graduation next year, she aspires to study journalism and linguistic anthropology at Stony Brook University.

Claudia Motley, a junior at Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School, was among 10 students from across the country to be selected for the 2016 Japan Society’s Junior Fellows Leadership Program study abroad experience in Japan. As a young girl, Motley lived in Japan for three years with her mother, who worked as an English teacher. Upon returning to New York, she realized her passion for traveling and was eager for the opportunity to one day return to the Asian country. Exploring her interest for the Japanese language and culture, Motley has attended the Stony Brook University pre-college Japanese program, a noncredit weekend Japanese language class for high school students, for the past two years. Last summer, she participated in the six-week Pre-College Summer Immersion in Korean Language and Culture program at Stony Brook University, where she earned four college credits.

Stamping Out Hunger Island Harvest Food Bank and the National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC) are again joining forces for the 24thannual Stamp Out Hunger campaign on Saturday, May 14th as part of the nation’s largest single-day food drive. Postal carriers throughout Nassau and Suffolk counties will collect nonperishable food items left by caring Long Islanders who want to be part of the solution in ending hunger in our communities. All food collected will benefit Island Harvest in providing supplemental food support to the more than 316,000 Long Islanders at risk of going hungry every day. Participation in the Stamp Out Hunger food drive is simple. Residents are asked to leave nonperishable food items such as canned goods, pasta, rice, boxed juices and shelf-stable milk (please, no glass items) next to their mailboxes before regularly scheduled mail delivery on Saturday, May 14, 2016. The postal

carriers will do the rest. Food donated will help replenish food supplies at Long Island’s food pantries, soup kitchens and other feeding programs served by Island Harvest. “The longstanding partnership we have forged with the NALC, the United States Postal Service, and our corporate partners is making a difference in providing much-needed food to the scores of men, women and children who often don’t know when their next meal will be,” said Randi Shubin Dresner, president and CEO of Island Harvest. “I’m confident that, as in years past, generous Long Islanders will answer the call and leave food donations next to their mailboxes on Saturday, May 14. When we lived in much simpler times, the immediate family decided who controlled the funeral service. The order of who controlled the funeral was the following: First and foremost it was the spouse who decided on the method of final disposition, cremation, burial, church service, etc. If there was no spouse, it was the children over 18 of the deceased who decided and usually they agreed with each other, if the individual was not married the parents made the decisions, if no parents the brothers and sisters and last on the list were aunts, uncles or cousins. If there weren’t any living relatives or executors of the will, the Public Administrator made the decision. The Law has changed, NYS Public Health Law 4201(2) provides for the designation in a written instrument of a person who shall control the disposition of the remains of a deceased person. Under Public Health Law 4201(3) the written instrument must be signed and dated by the decedent and the agent and properly witnessed. Now, understand I am not a lawyer, but my understanding of this law is that with the proper form, an individual can appoint someone other than his or her spouse to have control over their final disposition. For instance, a person who never divorced can appoint a significant other to control their final disposition. A person who lives with a domestic partner can appoint that person rather than his or her family to have control of the final disposition. A person who has married for a second time can appoint his or her children as agents for their funeral. If it is your intent to have someone other than your immediate next of kin to have control of your final disposition or if you want a specific child, parent or sibling to be in absolute control of your funeral-speak to an attorney and fill out the necessary paperwork. Then I would suggest taking it to an attorney for review. Keep in mind that giving someone control of your final disposition may very well include giving them financial obligation of paying for the funeral expenses.

The U.S. Navy Blue Angels will give the final performance of the show at approximately 2 p.m. The Royal Canadian Air Force Snowbirds will be making their 3rd performance at the Bethpage Air Show where they will perform over 50 different formations and maneuvers for fans. The last of the three jet teams to perform is the Breitling Jet Team, the world’s elite professional civilian jet aerobatics team, returning to Long Island for their second consecutive performance following a successful performance last year. The new United States Air Force F-35 Lightning II, the world’s most advanced multi-role fighter aircraft, will also perform at the Bethpage Air Show for the first time in its inaugural year its F-35 Heritage Flight performance. The F-35 Heritage Flight performance will feature the F-35 flying alongside WWII, Korean and Vietnam-era aircraft in a dynamic display of our nation’s air power history.
