Nope, You Don’t Have Writer’s Block. Nope. The secret that myself, and many others who write for a living know, is that no writing actually takes place at the computer (or with a pen and notebook for that matter). Writing is simply... thought married with emotion. If you’re having a thought and there is a strong emotion behind it, you are writing. This stands to reason, since you are the screenwriter, director and producer of your life. When you are walking through a museum exhibit, you are writing. When you are listening to a beautiful piece of music that moves you, you are writing. When you are sharing a hearty laugh with someone, you are writing. When you are attempting to work through heartbreak, disappointment, trauma, anger, frustration or even love... my friends, you are writing. Putting pen to paper or fingers to keyboard is not writing - that is the act of transcribing. By the time you sit down to “write,” it should already be written. In fact, I refuse to ever write my Living Well column in the actual column format. I insist on
writing it somewhere else. I do not want my headshot and my column’s logo staring back at me. Too much pressure. No thanks! I transfer my words over to my actual column once I have written down my thoughts. Lastly, here is my biggest trade secret I have to share when it comes to writing; some of my most engaging written words were actually created by talking to myself, out loud. Yes, your community newspaper’s columnist is a bit of a loony bird. I talk to myself - it’s how I write. And let me tell you, some of my most profound realizations about myself and about life have come from this stream of consciousness self-talk. Some of it is gibberish, but inevitably, some pearls come out. Shocked as anyone else, I run over to the nearest computer or notepad and get them down before they evaporate into thin air. Inspired thought is like a rare and elusive butterfly. You’re so awed by their beauty and divinity and before you know it, they’ve flown away. Capturing those moments is the art of writing.

We’ve all watched the scene in the movie where the frustrated writer is sitting at his computer, sighing and running his fingers through his hair as words fail to flow from his fingertips onto the screen. FASHION EXPERIENCE - Students in Louise Curci’s fashion class at Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School spent three days in New York City getting acquainted with the fashion industry. The students competed in a design competition at Mood Fabrics, home of Project Runway and did a personal styling session at Topshop in Chelsea. They visited a material maker and studied how garments are cut and styled from sketch to completion. They also participated in a marketing seminar at a Vans boutique shop in Soho. Identity Theft Prevention Tips
(NAPSI)-A recent online survey by Toluna/ Greenfield Online, Inc. found that while most consumers try to protect their identity, many admitted to risky behavior that could put them at risk for ID theft. To help educate and protect consumers, world-renowned fraud prevention expert Frank Abagnale offers these tips: • Shop smart: Limit the credit cards you carry. •Keep receipts and check your statements: Examine every charge on your statement before paying. Your receipts provide a great crossreference check and guard against suspicious activity. You have 30 days from the date of your statement to notify your financial institution of any discrepancies; otherwise, you can be liable for any purchases. • Protect your computer when online shopping: Make sure your security patch and anti-virus software are updated regularly. Consider technology to protect against potential viruses. • Watch where you shop online: Look for the lock icon on the site’s browser status bar, a sign that that site is safe. If you have never heard of a website before, see if it has security precautions in place and isn’t a fake site set up by identity thieves. •Don’t write checks: Give cash or gift cards. The information on a check—name, signature, address—can be used to steal identity. •Strengthen passwords: Use passwords with at least eight characters, including a combination of letters, numbers and symbols that are easy for you to remember but difficult for predators to guess. • Watch your wallet: Be careful at parties, restaurants, fitness clubs, shopping carts and your car. • Don’t take the bait

Evening Devoted to Science

Science was all around the circular-shaped cafeteria on April 11 as Edmund W. Miles Middle School in the Amityville Union Free School District hosted its annual science fair. Students shared information about their projects with teachers, administrators, board of education trustees, family members and other visitors. Each seventh grader completed an experiment following the scientific method, and had to create a poster board presentation outlining the process and results. Science Chairwoman Natasha Lim said that the goal was to have students gain an understanding of the different steps of the
scientific method through a hands-on project, as well as collect their own data and determine whether it proved or disproved their hypotheses. There were a wide variety of topics as students explored scientific concepts such as air flow, electricity, gravity and pressure. Several students completed experiments analyzing food and other household products, while others conducted surveys and performed statistical analysis. No science fair would be complete without a volcano, and there was also a slime-making station. Students in the STEAM classes, an elective for seventh, eighth and ninth graders that focuses on
science, technology, engineering, the arts and math, displayed projects they have been working on throughout the year including boats, bridges, catapults, hydrogen cars and paper rollercoasters. Science research students also presented their projects, including their creation of ecosystems for betta splendens and leopard geckos, research on the vaping epidemic is schools and its nanoscribe 3D printing of a scaffold for dentinogenesis. Medals At Math Fair Copiague Middle School math research students competed in the Long Island Math Fair on April 12 at Hofstra University. Under the direction of Copiague Middle School math teacher Stephen Temme, the students wrote an eight-page math research paper on a math topic of their choice. Once the paper was accepted,
they took the challenge of translating their written paper to an oral presentation. Students were required to explain their paper and show their mastery of the mathematical concepts they learned before two judges. They competed against other seventh and eighth grade students from across Long Island.
The district congratulates the following Copiague Middle School students: Samantha Huynh (eighth grade, silver medal); Giselle Peralta (seventh grade, silver medal); Jonathan Singh (seventh grade, bronze medal); and Alice Sztabinski (eighth grade, gold medal).

The Charity of the Month for May is: Bikers Against Child Abuse (BACA)

Bikers Against Child Abuse is a 501(C)(3) non-profit organization. BACA formed with the intent to create a safer environment for abused children. They exist as a body of bikers to empower children not to feel afraid of the world in which they live. They stand ready to lend support to their wounded friends by involving them with an established, united organization. BACA works in conjunction with local and state officials who are already in place to protect children. BACA receives calls on their helpline (631-408-8218), which is taken by the Chapter Child Liaison. This member contacts the family and an initial visit is organized to meet the guardian and child at their home or another location. Following this visit, two BACA members are assigned as “Primaries” to the child who remain available for contact 24/7/365. A ride is then organized for the members of the Chapter to meet the child. This is when a ceremony is performed to take the child into the BACA family, which is where the empowerment begins. BACA supports each child according to their individual needs. Some services available for the child and their family include a physical presence at the home (24/7 if needed), visiting the child at school, escorting the child to and from court, and they even maintain a therapy fund for children needing assistance.

If you are interested in becoming a BACA member you must meet certain requirements. Some of them are that you have regular access to a motorcycle, are 18 years or older, can pass an NCIC fingerprint check, can attend monthly meetings and Chapter events and that you have a desire to help abused children. If you meet the basic criteria, you can eventually become a “Cleared Supporter”, which is when you are assigned a Patched Member as your “Sponsor”. This member guides you through extensive training, which goes on for a minimum of at least one year before you can be considered eligible to become a full Patched Member. Reading Is Interactive Technology created new opportunities for second graders to improve their reading skills at Northwest Elementary School in the Amityville Union Free School District. Teachers Jenny Smith and Kerrin Faulkner recently worked on three reading objectives with their students — fluency, retelling a longer story and identifying literary language. Each child had to pick one of the those goals to explore further with a technology-based project.

For fluency, a group of students participated in a reader’s theater activity. They recited the “Three Little Pigs” in front of a green screen. After their performance was recorded, a background and graphics were added that reflected the story. Another group of students used Flipgrid, a video sharing platform, to retell parts of stories they were reading. Other students in the class were able to watch and create video responses. Children identified literary language and
author’s purpose in different books and poems. They documented their discoveries on sticky notes and created a large poster display, in addition to recording their thoughts in short videos using iPods. Several of the sticky notes on the poster were marked as “auras” which, when scanned with a smart phone camera, would bring up the videos. The project was created using HP Reveal, an app that adds visual interactivity to printed content.

The motto “Reduce, Reuse, Recycle” was the inspiration behind Earth Day projects at Northeast Elementary School in the Amityville Union Free School District. Students were charged with use old materials to create new products. Children in pre-K and kindergarten classes
expressed their creativity in many different ways, making artwork, games, household items and school supplies. Students made butterflies from use coffee filters and clothes pins, pencil cases from cereal boxes and a birdfeeder from a milk carton. A pre-K class created
