POPular Performance It was a night to remember as Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School hosted it’s annual POPS Concert on April 20th. Kicking off the show was the Madrigal Choir, directed by Gina Occhiogrosso, with an a cappella performance of Pentatonix’s “Sing,” followed by director Eric Dobmeier and the concert band performance of the thrilling arrangement “Fantasy of Flight” by John Williams. Throughout the highenergy show, audience members were treated to individual and group

Hope For Youth is hosting its Annual Run For Hope 5K in Heckscher State Park on May 14th beginning at 9 a.m. Proceeds from the run support Hope For Youth’s mission of facilitating positive change in youth and families on Long Island through residential, out-patient and preventive services. Last year, the event was attended by over 200 participants who walked, jogged, and ran to help bring awareness to the agency mission and the programs offered to families in need. Rosie Rosemarie Kupencow – “Rosie,” as I always affectionately called her – was the very first friend I made when I started working here at South Bay’s Neighbor Newspapers, just about 11 years ago. The resident proofreader, she introduced herself to me right away, and made sure I felt welcome in this new, unfamiliar setting, showing me the ins and outs of the newspaper she had come to call home for close to a decade at that point. In addition to being hired as an editorial assistant, I was brought on to help Rose, my new friend, with some of the weekly proofreading duties. Armed with her magnifying glass and a stash of green pens – “only green,” she would say, “NEVER make corrections with anything else” – she quickly took me under her wing, and we became close companions, often taking breaks together outside in whatever patches of sun we could find, and occasionally heading out for lunch outings at Nathan’s, one of our favorite destinations. She would always order the fish and chips from Arthur Treacher’s, then laugh hysterically as I looked on in horror, marveling at why someone would go to Nathan’s for anything other than a hotdog. After a short time, we realized that not only had I attended high school with her daughter, Jennifer, but we now lived just a few short blocks away from each other, and we began to carpool frequently to and from work. On one memorable return trip, during a rather heavy rainstorm, I infamously “drowned” my car during an ill-fated attempt to navigate down

her flooded street, despite her repeated warnings that it probably wasn’t going to end well. She never did let me live that one down, deservedly so. But that was Rose, always dispensing advice – some solicited, some not so much – and serving as the unofficial “work mother” to many of the younger employees. In that capacity, a coworker and I took her along as a “chaperone” of sorts on my very first trip to Adventureland not so many years ago. As we made our way from one ride to another, taking care not to miss any, the air was filled with the sounds of screaming – not ours, but of our beloved Rosie, yelling, “Get me OFF this thing!!!” and “Why did I let you two talk me into this???” I don’t think I have ever laughed so hysterically in my life. Needless to say, that was our first and last trip to any amusement park. But the memories, well, those last a lifetime. (As does the framed photo of the three of us plummeting over “Adventure Falls” at the moment of impact, a priceless reminder of all the fun that was had that day.) Just last week, Rose lost her battle with cancer, leaving a giant void here at South Bay – and in my heart. Her selfless determination to continue on over the past year was a perfect example of the type of person she was, always putting others first while forging ahead. What an incredible person, one that is dearly missed by so many. I’ll miss her sitting in the “friend” chair on the other side of my desk, coming to chat about life and work and family and friends and everything in between.

I’ll miss our goodnatured teasing back and forth... her imitations of my ballet positions... her self-deprecating analysis of her “fashion” sense – “don’t have a hair clip, use a paper clip!”... our phone conversations – in spite of her staunch refusal to ever get a cell phone, and her insistence on keeping important phone numbers on a crumbled piece of paper in her pocketbook… just seeing her smiling face every day at the office. But mostly, I’ll miss my special friend. This past December, in celebration of her birthday, Rose and I went out to dinner. She may not have been feeling like her old self, but it was truly like old times. For over three hours, we sat and talked, just the two of us, reminiscing about the highlights and lowlights of our decade working together, chatting about the latest happenings in our lives… and we laughed, hysterically, about many of the same stories recounted here – and countless others, some not suitable for publication in a family newspaper! We could have continued talking for three more hours, easily; it seemed that neither of us wanted that night, that moment, to end. I will always treasure it. How lucky I was to have her in my life – there to guide the way as I began this new chapter all those years ago… and there to see me through the journey every step of the way since. Rose, you will never be forgotten – not by me, and not by those who had the wonderful pleasure of knowing you, of loving you, of having you touch their lives. May you be at peace now.

A new computer lab for formerly homeless Veterans was recently opened at the John J. Lynch Veterans Place Shelter in Yaphank, thanks to the generosity of the Retired Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) of Suffolk. The computers will be used to help Veterans residing at the shelter to search for and secure employment. “This opens up a whole new world for our Veterans at the John J. Lynch Shelter,” commented Wilkens Young, Director of Suffolk County United Veterans, which runs the shelter. “They can now enroll in online vocational and educational training programs, search for employment, prepare resumes, and submit job applications. We are grateful to RSVP Suffolk for this very generous and much-needed donation.” RSVP Suffolk, an allvolunteer organization, refurbishes donated computers and provides them at no-cost to community groups – with a special focus on Veterans organizations – that could not otherwise afford them through their ‘Computer Connections Program.’” SCUV operates the computer lab – equipped by RSVP with five computer workstations, a printer, and a copier –

seven days a week from 9 a.m. through 9 p.m. RSVP will also be providing training to help Veterans improve their computer skills. Suffolk County United Veterans is a project of the not-for-profit Association for Mental Health and Wellness, a behavioral healthcare organization headquartered in

National Finalists Students Jada Angel, Christopher Canenguez, Gabriela Genao, Josephine Jean-Baptiste, Zuri Milliner, Marvin Pineda Lobo, Blanca Reyes and Abel Rivera along with science chairperson Dr. Daniel Leccese of Copiague Middle School in Copiague, have been named national finalists in the inaugural Bright Schools Competition™. The competition is a collaborative effort of the National Sleep Foundation and the National Science Teachers Association that encourages students in grades 6-8 to explore the correlation between light and sleep and how it influences student health and performance. The Copiague seventh-grade team and eighth-grade team are among 50 national finalist teams, chosen among 170 teams, made up of nearly 550 students from 63 schools. On May 2nd, 2016, first-, second- and third-place national winning teams will be announced. The complete list of the national finalists can be found at http://brightschoolscompetition.org/. Copiague seventh-grade team’s winning project is titled “Pasta and Sleep.” Copiague eighth-grade team’s winning project is titled “Sleep and Stress.” “The National Sleep Foundation is encouraged to see so many students interested in how light directly affects their sleep and academic performance,” said David Cloud, CEO of the National Sleep Foundation. “We congratulate

the finalists on their innovative ideas and thoughtful projects. These students, teachers and parents will help bring about change in the way institutions view lighting and overall health.” Under the mentorship of an adult coach/teacher, teams of two to four students identify, investigate, and research an issue related to light and sleep as it pertains

to their community and/or young adolescents. Using scientific inquiry or engineering design concepts teams develop a prototype, create an awareness campaign, or write a research proposal for the competition. Each team then submits a written report detailing their project along with a three-minute video showcasing

their investigation. Projects are evaluated on the basis of several criteria, including scientific accuracy, innovativeness, and potential impact. “Congratulations to all of the national finalists who competed in the competition this year,” said NSTA Executive Director Dr. David Evans. “We are extremely impressed with the quality of work and innovative ideas these students have exhibited as they explored science and found ways to benefit their communities and society as a whole.” All students who enter the competition will receive a certificate of participation. Students on the first-place national winning team will each receive a cash prize of $5,000; second-place students will receive $2,500; and third-place students will receive $1,500. The coach/teacher of the first-place team will also receive a prize package, including Vernier Middle School Probeware, an all-expense paid trip to an NSTA conference, and membership to NSTA.
