of Education adopted its proposed 2017-2018 budget, received an update on capital projects and celebrated the achievements of students and staff at its April 19 meeting. Three students from the piano lab class at Amityville Memorial High School shared their talents with the board, administrators and the public. Brian Portillo performed “Musette” by J.S. Bach while John Quinane performed movement I of First Sonatina by Lynn Freeman Olsen and Trevony Palmer played movements II and III. Edward Plaia, principal of Edmund W. Miles Middle School, gave a presentation on the robotics program. The school has purchased several Lego robotics kits and sent a team this year to the FIRST Robotics Competition. He explained
STEM challenges and by engaging in physical and digital creation, students develop 21st century skills. They also become better communicators and collaborators. Students Trey Donaldson and Danasia Ghomes gave a robotics demonstration. Mary Stephens, director of English as a New Language and World Languages, spoke about the services offered for bilingual and multilingual students. She detailed the teachers and support available at each school, changes in terminology, and how the ENL program relates to the goals of the district’s strategic plan. Ms. Stephens also shared writing created by English language learners and introduced the two students who recently participated in the Puerto Rican/Hispanic Youth

To celebrate Earth Day, students at Northwest Elementary School in the Amityville Union Free School District participated in literacy, science and art activities to learn how to make the planet a better place. First-graders in Kristina Komsic’s class used tracings of their hands and blue and green paper circles to create “I’ve Got
the Whole World in My Hands” posters. They also wrote sentences about what they can do to protect the planet. In Nancy Davi-Ortiz’s second-grade class, children learned about the life cycle of plants by sprouting lima beans. They placed their beans into mason jars, which are more environmentally friendly than plastic bags,
and added a paper towel and water. Once the beans sprout, they will plant them in small pots to bring home in time for Mother’s Day. The students also watched a video about the harmful effects of plastics, particularly on animals and marine life. After reading Dr. Seuss’ “The Lorax,” students in Kelli Geilman’s thirdgrade class made their own

The cafeteria at Deauville Gardens East Elementary School in the Copiague School District was transformed into a candlelit Parisian café and student-poets showed off their talents during the school’s poetry café on
April 25th. Dressed in their colored berets, students in grades 3-5 celebrated literacy night by reading both original and published poems of their choice to their families and peers in an open mic format. Each
student received a treat bag filled with a beret, sunglasses and an acrostic poetry book to take home. During the intermission, guests snacked on cookies and treats served by their teachers.

Me, I find particular solace in the schedules of daily life more so than most. My mornings, especially, tend to dictate the tone of the afternoon and evening. This is both good and bad, of course. A missed wake-up alarm, a favorite pair of jeans in the laundry, no more milk in the fridge… all can lead to being thrown off track and sent on your way in a state of disarray. Whereas, when things run like clockwork, the feeling tends to be more of the notion that nothing can stand in the way of productivity. Who knew the snooze button could hold so much power? In lieu of last week’s column

ruminating on the power of the almighty calendar and its tendency to dictate our schedules to the point that we no longer can differentiate those things we truly enjoy doing from those that are pure obligation, I received several kind letters from readers expressing their complete agreement that their lives, too, have been taken over by those tiny square boxes. One woman even went so far as to recommend a book, “Quiet Mind,” which suggests that we would all be better served by taking a moment to sit back and relax, to find an hour of peace in which to clear our minds of the clutter that accumulates over the course of day after day spent running from one task to the next. The idea is to eventually, over time, expand upon this hour and have its influence extend throughout the entire day. How nice that would be.
It all begins with one moment, whether it is rising early to see the sun come up over the Great South Bay, or taking the extra time to prepare a homemade breakfast during the rush of the week, or even driving the scenic route to work. Little things add up to big things, and big things become a way of living, day by day. There is ample benefit to be found in making that effort. It is not a perfect process, to be sure. There will still be those days when the snooze button seems the most viable option, when skipping breakfast and running out the door to sit in traffic is how you are destined to spend your morning. But that doesn’t have to dictate the tone of the entire day. Pop a CD in, turn up the volume, sit back and enjoy the ride. There are miles to go before you sleep.

Leakage of urine is not normal but is very common in women. In most cases the problem can be improved. There are a number of reasons why women may have problems with their bladder control but the two most prevalent types are stress incontinence and urge incontinence. Stress incontinence is when some loss of urine takes place at the same moment as the cough, laugh or exercise. It is related to the increased abdominal pressure which puts excess pressure on the bladder. It is common in women in the years after childbirth but may also be a problem for cigarette smokers, people with asthma and chronic constipation. It may also be hereditary. The repeated straining movement of the cough or pushing to have a bowel movement weakens the connective tissues. Treatment options include pelvic floor exercises to try and strengthen the muscles of the pelvic floor, biofeedback and surgery. When the leakage is substantial surgery is usually the best course of action. Surgery for stress incontinence has been greatly improved in the last few years with the development of slings. In the past, the surgery required abdominal incisions with a hospital stay and prolonged recovery. Today the procedures have become ambulatory with quick recovery and very good success rates. The sling refers to a piece of material

(the mesh) that is placed under the urethra to support it like a hammock. The purpose is to prevent the urethra from excess descent with the increased abdominal pressure. Mesh has been used successfully for a number of years internationally with approximately 80-90% satisfaction rates. Potential complications of mesh are well known. It needs to be thoroughly under the vaginal tissues so it does not erode into the vagina. Erosions have occurred even years after the placement of the sling. These problems are treatable. Women who suffer from embarrassing leakage need not suffer in silence. Great success and thousands of satisfied women have had their lives improved after surgical repair. The urge type incontinence refers to the inability to get to the toilet on time when the urge to void begins. There are many causes for this type of incontinence. It may vary from one incontinent episode a day to multiple accidents, daytime and nighttime frequency. The leakage tends to be of larger amounts as the bladder starts to empty despite trying to stop it. This type of leakage is not not treatable with surgery like the stress type. Decreasing the amount of coffee, tea, colas, alcohol and spicy food may help to some degree. Voiding more frequently, prior to the urge may prevent the accident. Medications are often used. The purpose of
the medication is to prevent the bladder from contracting too quickly to allow more time to get to the toilet. It may also decrease the frequency. Medications are not always helpful, and in many cases, the side effects may be troubling. When medications are not helpful or cannot be
tolerated, other options include Botox injections in the bladder and neuromodulation. It is important to know that the majority of women with urinary leakage problems may be helped if not cured. There is no reason to suffer in silence. Pharmacies have entire incontinence

WELLINGTON, Fla. (CBS12) — Grief counselors are at Emerald Cove Middle School on Monday to help students cope with the loss of a fellow student, according to district leaders. Jonathon Gonzalez, 13, died after crashing a dirt bike over the weekend. It happened Sunday afternoon near Oakberry Circle and Oak Hamlet Lane in Wellington. The dirt bike crashed into a canal, according to Palm Beach County Fire Rescue spokesman Albert Borroto. A medical helicopter took the boy to the hospital where he later died. Palm Beach County Schools says the counselors are being made available to both students and staff. The Gonzalez family set up a GoFundMe page (https://www.gofundme.com/our-beloved-jonathon-gonzalez) to help with the funeral expenses. Hundreds of students and friends showed up at a candlelight vigil at the Wellington Edge clubhouse. Mourners marched to the canal where the crash happened.
