New York Blood Center Announces A Blood Emergency year since these groups had to cancel their blood drives due to COVID-19 and few have been able to resume these lifesaving events. NYBC currently has a 4 day supply of blood, which is well below what is needed by area hospitals. New York’s healthcare system requires 1,500

donations each day to treat patients ranging from trauma victims to newborn babies and their mothers to cancer patients. Donors with type O and type B blood are especially needed as NYBC currently has a 1-2 day supply of these blood types. “With thousands of New Yorkers getting

Contractors For Kids (CFK) is a non-profit organization, which was founded for the purpose of providing assistance to families in Long Island communities. Their goal is to assist children and their families overcome obstacles that have unfortunately changed or have impacted their lives through the sickness, injury or death of a child. They are committed to this cause and want to give hope and reassurance for the futures of Long Islanders. CFK was founded in 2005 by Kevin Harney and Alan Nahmias of Stalco Construction. Kevin and Alan, both long-time philanthropists, saw the growing need for financial assistance in our communities and knew that something more needed to be done. Through random acts of kindness, they were slowly changing the lives of others, however they thirsted to make more change so they decided to form this non-profit, Contractors For Kids. Their organization runs on donations only and is volunteer based, they have no employees. One family at a time, they make sure that the financial hardship brought on by sickness, injury or death does not destroy an already hurting family. Whether it is to pay a phone bill or a mortgage payment, they want to be there to help. Since 2005, CFK has given out more than 3 MILLION DOLLARS to help local Long Islanders. Here are some of the areas they’ve helped others financially: Rent, Mortgage Payments, Oil Deliveries, Utility Bills, Food, Transportation To & From Hospitals, Co-Payments, Medications & Funeral Expenses. So how do you qualify to get help? It’s quite simple. If you can prove that you are struggling financially because of the sickness, injury or death of a child, you live on Long Island (in Nassau or Suffolk County), and you have

filled out their Application For Assistance, they will get in touch with you to see how they can be of help! Want to help make a difference? You can do so by learning their mission, spreading awareness, referring families to CFK, distributing handouts/ electronic materials and representing CFK at health fairs, open enrollment or employee meetings. Additionally, on June 14th CFK will be holding their 15th Annual Golf Outing at Woodside Club in Muttontown. This will be a COVID-19 compliant event...all local guidelines will be adhered to! There will be boxed breakfast, beverage carts, a silent auction, raffles, prizes, barbeque and of course, golfing. If you would like to attend as an individual player, in a group of 4 players or you would like to sign-up as a sponsor, you can. However, space is limited. Copiague Middle School students in Stephen DiGiorgio’s robotics class participated in the Town of Babylon’s “Go Fly a Kite” contest at Cedar Beach on April 10. This year’s contest was themed “America the Beautiful.” Copiague Middle School students Rosina Wickham, Jonyka-Lee Whittingham, Amaya McFadden, Sophia Crouthamel, Genevia Roberts and Kristen Hassel decided to work together to take on the challenge. After a few brainstorming

sessions, the girls decided that they would create a kite that was inspired by Copiague School District’s mascot, the eagle. “Despite some early morning rain that caused some problems for the kite, the weather turned out to be beautiful and the girls were able to make some last minute adjustments to their kite to make it ready for flight,” Mr. DiGiorgio said. “When the judges were ready to evaluate our kite, the girls prepared for their first flight. The look

of joy and excitement on their faces when the kite soared effortlessly into the air made all of their hard work worth it.” Students used their STEAM skills to create the kites, which competed in categories such as most creative, most unusual and funniest design. The Copiague Middle School team was awarded a first place medal and an additional certificate for having the most creative kite design.

PSEG Long Island is preparing for the upcoming osprey breeding season by inspecting known nesting areas, performing maintenance on the osprey cams it installed last year, and cleaning out debris and garbage in the nests located near the cameras in Oyster Bay and Patchogue, N.Y. “On a recent cold, wintery day, crews visited the two osprey nests viewable via the PSEG Long Island osprey cam to clean and reinforce the cameras and remove debris from the nests,” said John O’Connell, vice president of Transmission and Distribution, PSEG Long Island. “We look forward to the return of the osprey pairs so we can all enjoy a glimpse of these majestic birds in their natural environment.” To view the work at the nest, visit https://youtu.be/ zFbNipM6ne0. In addition to raising funds for HKS, participants can compete to win a variety of prizes, including TD Bank and Nike gift cards in amounts ranging from $500 to $100.
