On Saturday morning, April 8th, 75 teams of students from 25 Catholic elementary schools across Long Island met at Holy Trinity High School for the Diocesan STEM Fair. The students, who had all qualified by being one of the stand-out exhibits in their school’s science fair, came to have their projects judged by a panel of teachers, Holy Trinity Honors Science students and some guest judges. So much of life is spent planning, filling in those square boxes on the calendar with appointments and meetings and lunch dates and movie outings. And yet, very little of that time is spent doing things we truly enjoy. Even certain social engagements seem to take on a sense of obligation, of fitting in “fun” simply so that we can check off “reconnecting with old friends” from the neverending to do list. To do, or not to do, that is the question. Sure, there are plenty of things we “have” to do, even if we sometimes lose sight of why. We have been trained, conditioned, to meet the expectations of a society that sees any type of downtime as a bad thing.

If you’re not doing something 24/7, surely you must be shirking some responsibility or another. But what if we simply choose to kick back and relax, to spend our time “doing” nothing – and just leave it at that, no explanation needed. Is that really such a bad thing? When was the last time you slept in, just because? When did you have an entire day with absolutely nothing planned, and no sense of guilt because of it? Leisure does not equal laziness. I recently had lunch with a friend, and this very topic came up, in the context of taking a step back and truly evaluating what it is we want to do – in life as a whole, over the next several

months, weeks, days… even five minutes. How much time is spent planning; yet, of that, very little - if any - is devoted to these questions. We simply forge on, blind to our desires. It’s funny, when you take a moment, the realization kicks in of how few things we do in our daily lives that truly make us happy. Sure, there will always be obligations of one sort or another; but we can frame those with other tasks that are slightly more fulfilling and productive over the long term. The key is figuring out what those are, sooner rather than later. Then you can pencil them in on the calendar.

On April 29th30th, firehouses across the State will open their doors to the public in an effort to increase membership in the volunteer fire service. Members of the public are invited to visit their local firehouses, where volunteer firefighters will be conducting tours of their facilities, demonstrating firefighting techniques, and allowing visitors to try on turnout gear. (the mesh) that is placed under the urethra to support it like a hammock. The purpose is to prevent the urethra from excess descent with the increased abdominal pressure. Mesh has been used successfully for a number of years internationally with approximately 80-90% satisfaction rates. Potential complications of mesh are well known. It needs to be thoroughly under the vaginal tissues so it does not erode into the vagina. Erosions have occurred even years after the placement of the sling. These problems are treatable. Women who suffer from embarrassing leakage need not suffer in silence. Great success and thousands of satisfied women have had their lives improved after surgical repair. The urge type incontinence refers to the inability to get to the toilet on time when the urge to void begins. There are many causes for this type of incontinence. It may vary from one incontinent episode a day to multiple accidents, daytime and nighttime frequency. The leakage tends to be of larger amounts as the bladder starts to empty despite trying to stop it. This type of leakage is not not treatable with surgery like the stress type. Decreasing the amount of coffee, tea, colas, alcohol and spicy food may help to some degree. Voiding more frequently, prior to the urge may prevent the accident. Medications are often used. The purpose of

Leakage of urine is not normal but is very common in women. In most cases the problem can be improved. There are a number of reasons why women may have problems with their bladder control but the two most prevalent types are stress incontinence and urge incontinence. Stress incontinence is when some loss of urine takes place at the same moment as the cough, laugh or exercise. Treatment options include pelvic floor exercises to try and strengthen the muscles of the pelvic floor, biofeedback and surgery. When the leakage is substantial surgery is usually the best course of action. Surgery for stress incontinence has been greatly improved in the last few years with the development of slings. In the past, the surgery required abdominal incisions with a hospital stay and prolonged recovery. Today the procedures have become ambulatory with quick recovery and very good success rates. The sling refers to a piece of material

Anti-Bullying Message A powerful story about the tragic consequences of bullying that has been told at schools across the nation made a lasting impression on students at Edmund W. Miles Middle School in the Amityville Union Free School District on April 18th. In an effort to raise awareness about bullying and cyberbullying, the school hosted “Ryan’s Story,” in which John Halligan chronicled the life of his son, the bullying he endured and his eventual suicide. The presentation began with a slideshow of pictures and videos of Ryan, followed by Halligan recounting the struggles

the young boy faced. Halligan went on to speak of the emotional toll that the death took on Ryan’s family and friends. He made comparisons to the technology used by teenagers then and now, noting that texting and social media has replaced instant messaging and chat rooms as ways for bullies to hide behind their screens. Bullies get their power from having an audience and Halligan said that those who act as bystanders are just as guilty. He said that students should use peer pressure as a positive tool by encouraging their friends to make good decisions and treat others

with respect and dignity. Halligan’s message was that “any ink blot could be turned into a butterfly,” meaning that it’s never too late for someone to become a good person. He expressed hope that anyone hearing his message who has bullied others would think twice about their actions and apologize to the people they have mistreated. “Being an upstander and sticking up for each other is a huge component of our anti-bullying program,” Principal Edward Plaia said. “We want our students to follow the golden rule treat people the way you want to be treated.”

Family Learning Spring was in the air at Northeast Elementary School in the Amityville Union Free School District, which held a pre-k family learning night on April 18th. Students joined with their parents, grandparents and siblings to celebrate author and illustrator Eric Carle, whose books relate well to other subjects like

math and science. At each station, children made crafts based on Carle’s different books such as paper caterpillars and butterflies for “The Very Hungry Caterpillar” or crab whistles for “A House for Hermit Crab.” All activities included projects that students could do at home. From

“The Tiny Seed” center, every child received a cup of dirt with a seed to grow their own sunflower. “What we hope they take away from this is activities that the parents can do with their children when they get home to continue to foster a love of learning,” said pre-K teacher Jacqueline Floyd.
