an express courier service headquartered in Springfield Gardens, learned about Friends of Karen when one of her employees saw hundreds of people wearing the team shirts out on the course of the Long Island Marathon in 2011. Together they decided to motivate employees to sign up to help raise funds and awareness for Friends of Karen and for the past three years many of their employees trained together to do the 10K event. “Each year, post-event, there was not only a sense of accomplishment in helping the families of Friends of Karen but a significant positive shift in how our staff were relating to one another.” This year, soon after the employees starting mapping out their training course, one of them shared that

A genuine camaraderie among employees, morale-boosting and team building are some of the terms heard from representatives of several companies who have joined the annual Walk-Run for Friends of Karen at the Long Island Marathon. This year’s events, 5K Walk-Run on Saturday, May 2nd, at Mitchel Athletic Complex in Uniondale, and 10K, half and full marathons scheduled for Sunday, May 3rd, at Eisenhower Park in East Meadow, will again be filled with the enthusiasm of hundreds of Friends of Karen supporters – among the thousands of Marathon participants – being able to help families who turn to the tri-state organization for assistance when a child is diagnosed with cancer or another life-threatening illness. “The harsh winter weather this year presented Long Islanders experiencing hunger with many challenges, including pay loss due to the weather, making it an even more difficult time to put food on the table,” explained Dresner. “This, coupled with the usual springtime need for food following the depletion of our holiday donations, makes this year’s Stamp Out Hunger food drive essential.” Since the inception of Stamp Out Hunger in 1992, over 1.3 billion pounds of food have been collected by letter carriers in the United States. Locally, last year Long Islanders donated more than 326,000 pounds of food and this year, Island Harvest expects a similar amount to be collected by letter carriers on 2,219 carrier routes across Long Island. “The most trusted federal employees, U.S. Postal Service letter carriers are routinely involved in many

May 9th. Here’s how it works. Long Islanders are being asked to set out non-perishable food by their mailboxes on May 9th, which will then be picked up by their letter carriers while delivering the day’s mail. The letter carriers will then deliver their collected food to an Island Harvest “Stamp Out Hunger” warehouse – where an army of volunteers will sort food, to be distributed immediately to Island Harvest’s network of 570 member agencies, including food pantries and soup kitchens throughout Long Island. “While the letter carriers do all of the day’s heavy lifting, Stamp Out Hunger makes donating easy. All people have to do is leave their donation by their mailbox,” asserts Randi Shubin Dresner, President & CEO, Island Harvest. “Our goal is for every family to donate something, and let their letter carriers do the rest. It’s that simple.”

Shelter’s cats and dogs. On February 28th, Little Shelter was asked to bring two dogs to the Smithtown branch as an added attraction to the collection that was being taken. You guessed it, Betty and Wilma were the dogs in attendance, and those girls know how to work a crowd! In fact, Betty and Wilma had recently participated in a dog fashion show where they were a big hit and a crowd favorite. The TFCU event turned out to be a special day for these two senior dogs, for it was at this event that Betty and Wilma met their new family. One of TFCU’s wonderful patrons saw these girls in the branch and there was an instant connection. After the event, the family visited Wilma and Betty at Little Shelter and decided to adopt them! What a wonderful ending for both the family and for these great dogs.

When we lived in much simpler times, the immediate family decided who controlled the funeral service. The order of who controlled the funeral was the following: First and foremost, it was the spouse who decided on the method of final disposition, cremation, burial, church service, etc. If there was no spouse, it was the children over 18 of the deceased who decided and usually they agreed with each other. If the individual was not married, the parents made the decisions. If no parents, the brothers and sisters. And last on the list were aunts, uncles or cousins. If there weren’t any living relatives or executors of the will, the Public Administrator made the decision. The Law has changed, NYS Public Health Law 4201(2) provides for the designation in a written instrument of a person who shall control the disposition of the remains of a deceased person. Under Public Health Law 4201(3) the written instrument must be signed and dated by the decendent and the agent and properly witnessed. Now, understand I am not a lawyer, but my understanding of this law is that with the proper form, an individual can appoint someone other than his or her spouse to have control over their final disposition. For instance, a person who never divorced can appoint a significant other to control their final disposition. A person who lives with a domestic partner can appoint that person rather than his or her family to have control of the final disposition. A person who has married for a second time can appoint his or her children as agents for their funeral. If it is your intent to have someone other than your immediate next of kin to have control of your final disposition or if you want a specific child, parent or sibling to be in absolute control of your funeral speak to an attorney and fill out the necessary paperwork. You can visit the website www.health.state.ny.us/ professionals/funeraldirectors/dispositionremains.htm and get more information and download the form. Then I would suggest taking it to an attorney for review. Keep in mind that giving someone control of your final disposition may very well include giving them financial obligation of paying for the funeral expenses.

Joseph was an alter server at Our Lady of the Assumption Church in Copiague, a member of the Metropolitan Youth Orchestra and took part in numerous athletic teams. After graduating high school, Joseph attended Hofstra University, where he was a walk on member of the school’s Division I Lacrosse team. A scholarship was created in Joseph’s memory to award students in our area who have the same passion

for making a difference in the community as Joseph did. The Joseph A. Ferriso, who lost his life in a car accident this past January at the age of 19.
