CELEBRATING A LOVE FOR MUSIC - In celebration of Music in Our Schools month in March, Ms. Davidson’s music students at Susan E. Wiley Elementary School in the Copiague School District celebrated their love of music. The fourth and fifth grade classes talked about what music means to them. Each student wrote on an individual music note about either their favorite instrument or how music makes them feel. The notes were hung outside the classroom throughout the month. In honor of Women’s History Month, Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School held its seventh annual Voice to Voice Empowerment session on March 25.  Though this year’s program was virtual, the powerful messages received during the session still resonated within the group.  Abigail Webb performed “The Star-Spangled Banner.” Walter G. O’Connell Assistant Principal Tamika Eason welcomed the attendees and offered opening remarks. “Use your voice in any space you occupy,” Ms. Eason said. “Challenge stereotypes and break barriers and glass ceilings.” Along with Voice to Voice members, the honorees from the past six years

were also welcomed during the virtual presentation. This year’s guest speaker honoree was Copiague School District’s Superintendent of Schools Dr. Kathleen Bannon. As the first female superintendent of Copiague School District, Dr. Bannon worked her way up the ranks to her position through hard work and perseverance. Dr. Bannon looked back on her childhood in the 1960s and spoke about the educational path that led her to her position today. She said setting goals and deadlines for herself, along with a strong work ethic, allowed her to be successful. Following Dr. Bannon’s presentation, students were placed into virtual

groups to generate questions to ask her during the question-andanswer  portion of the program. Each virtual cooperative group was facilitated by student leaders who have been members of  the Voice to Voice Women’s Empowerment Program for a number of years.  Following the questionand-answer portion, the students reestablished their groups to collaborate and reflect upon how Dr. Bannon’s journey resonated with them. The students recited poems and offered reflections on lessons learned from Dr. Bannon’s personal journey. To conclude the program, the audience affirmed their inner strength and power in unison.

Contractors For Kids (CFK) is a non-profit organization, which was founded for the purpose of providing assistance to families in Long Island communities. Their goal is to assist children and their families overcome obstacles that have unfortunately changed or have impacted their lives through the sickness, injury or death of a child. They are committed to this cause and want to give hope and reassurance for the futures of Long Islanders. CFK was founded in 2005 by Kevin Harney and Alan Nahmias of Stalco Construction. Kevin and Alan, both long-time philanthropists, saw the growing need for financial assistance in our communities and knew that something more needed to be done. Through random acts of kindness, they were slowly changing the lives of others, however they thirsted to make more change so they decided to form this non-profit, Contractors For Kids. Their organization runs on donations only and is volunteer based, they have no employees. One family at a time, they make sure that the financial hardship brought on by sickness, injury or death does not destroy an already hurting family. Whether it is to pay a phone bill or a mortgage payment, they want to be there to help. Since 2005, CFK has given out more than 3 MILLION DOLLARS to help local Long Islanders. Here are some of the areas they’ve helped others financially: Rent, Mortgage Payments, Oil Deliveries, Utility Bills, Food, Transportation To & From Hospitals, Co-Payments, Medications & Funeral Expenses. Contractors For Kids is local to the core. They know our Island well and they love to help locals. Their office is located in Holbrook and they have no plans of going anywhere. The

pandemic took its toll on CFK, as it did on many, but they stayed afloat and are thankful for the opportunity to continue to make a difference. Recently, CFK helped a 12 year old boy who suffered from a traumatic brain injury. He is now blind and he has a history of Wilm’s tumor and craniotomy, among many other complications. This little boy was put into the foster system and was adopted by the nurse that fostered him. CFK was able to provide them with a special chair to hold him, car payments and rent! Additionally, they assisted a 6 year old girl with Fibromatosis soft tissue sarcoma who lives in Holbrook. Due to intensive Chemo treatments, her mom had to stay home with her. CFK helped with several month’s mortgage payments, water and electric bills, as well as car payments to help keep this family afloat during difficult times! So how do you qualify to get help? It’s quite simple. If you can prove that you are struggling financially because of the sickness, injury or death of a child, you live on Long Island (in Nassau or Suffolk County), and you have filled out their Application For Assistance, they will get in touch with you to see how they can be of help! Want to help make a difference? You can do so by learning their mission, spreading awareness, referring families to CFK, distributing handouts/electronic materials and representing CFK at health fairs, open enrollment or employee meetings. SUFFOLK LEGISLATURE’S 2021 PAGE PROGRAM - As part of their summer internship last year, Suffolk County Legislature Pages helped Island Harvest deliver meals to families in need. Applications to join this year’s class of Pages are due May 7. Program participants work directly with legislators and their staff, while also establishing a mock legislature to debate legislation and discuss real issues facing the county. My staff and I have thoroughly enjoyed working with our Pages over the years, and I would strongly recommend those interested to contact their legislator and apply.” The Page Program was created by the Suffolk County Legislature Office of the Presiding Officer in 2015 to provide students with a rewarding and educational experience in local government. Several

former Pages return to serve as “Senior Pages” who help organize activities and guide the new class. Logan Mazer, of Coram, who served as a Page in last year’s class and was elected by his peers to serve as the Page Presiding Officer during the mock legislative meetings, described being in the program as an “invaluable experience.” “Despite the challenges posed by COVID-19, we were able to come together and experience some of the ins-and-outs of county government through hands-on experience,” Mazer said. “I highly encourage anyone who is interested in the policy process, government, or bettering their community to apply for this program. Suffolk County Legislature Presiding Officer Rob Calarco has announced that applications are being accepted for the 2021 Page Program. Approaching its seventh year, the legislature’s Page Program is an immersive summer internship program that gives college students the opportunity to learn about county government and public service. The 2021 program will run for 12 weeks, beginning with an orientation on May 21 and culminating in a graduation ceremony on Aug. 6. Nearly 30 students participated in last year’s program, which went fully remote as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. This year’s program will be remote as well, offering students the ability to participate virtually via Zoom. “This summer program has been designed to provide the guidance and training students need to become the next generation of leaders,” said Presiding Officer Calarco. “They will see firsthand what it is like to work in government and develop leadership skills that build confidence. Last year’s remote program was tremendously successful, and we look forward to once again providing a meaningful experience for our Pages.” Participants will connect with legislators, elected officials, and policymakers from throughout Suffolk County, participate in an online mock legislature, and attend weekly virtual workshops on leadership and personal development. Students will also be tasked with developing service projects that address one of the many issues presented by the COVID-19 pandemic. The application to join the 2021 class of Pages is due May 7. Helen Keller Services Hosts Virtual 5k Fundraiser Second Annual Helen’s 5k Run Walk. Ride. 2021 Goes Online https://events.elitefeats. com/hks21. “While we cannot be together in person this year, we invite you to join us virtually to be a part of this year’s fundraising campaign,” said Sue Ruzenski, CEO of HKS. “Whether it is indoors or outside in the fresh air while running, walking or riding the 5K, there are many ways to participate, support and stay connected.” Last year was the first year HKS could not have an in-person event in over 30 years. The 5k Run. Walk. Ride. seeks to Break Down Barriers to Independence, Build a More Inclusive Society and Bring Inner Capability Out. Participants register online and then record

their runs with a timer or smartphone app such as Strava. After the run, participants update their time on the website for credit. The Kiwanis Club of Lindenhurst officially launched it’s 2021 Hometown Heroes Banner Program in partnership with the Town of Babylon offering residents the opportunity to honor service men and women with a commemorative banner to be displayed in the hamlets of North Babylon, West Babylon, Deer Park, Wheatley Heights, North Amityville, Wyandanch and Copiague. First introduced in the Village of Lindenhurst, the program has now expanded throughout Babylon where banners will be displayed on decorative lamp posts from Memorial Day to Veterans Day. “We are extremely grateful to Babylon Supervisor Rich Shaffer and Beautification Director Viscel Moore for working with us to bring the Hometown Heroes Banner Program to all residents of the Town of Babylon”, said Kiwanis Committee Chair Ralph Somma. “Special thanks to “Navy Moms” Carolyn Mormino and Jeanine Walther for their perseverance in getting the Hometown Heroes program to the Town,” he added. Banners cost $200 and display a picture of the service member along with his or her name, branch and years of service. Participants can choose among one of three veterans’ organizations where a portion of the proceeds will be donated.
