During their meeting on April 7th, club members used markers, colored pencils and stickers to decorate key chains that had a symbol of a “stop hand.” On the key chains, they wrote messages to discourage high school students from texting and driving and drinking and driving. Once the key chains were laminated, they were attached to a letter from the club, advising the recipient to be safe, make good choices and know that they are viewed as a role model. Coordinated by SADD Club advisers Lissette Persico and Adrienne Mahoney as well as members of the prom committee, high school students will receive a letter and keychain when they purchase their ticket for prom. Some club members will have the opportunity to handdeliver their key chains to an older sibling or family member who attends the high school.

Baskets Toward Health Copiague Middle School students demonstrated their commitment toward leading a heart-healthy lifestyle when they participated in the school’s annual “Hoops for Heart” event. Hoops for Heart is a national fundraising program sponsored jointly by the Society of Health and Physical Educators of America and the American Heart Association.

Through the program, students raise funds for the AHA while participating in activities that promote physical fitness. During their physical education classes, students hit the courts to practice their dribbling and shooting skills as well as completed a basketballthemed obstacle course. To signify their participation, they wrote their name on a dog sticker and placed it

on the bulletin board titled “The Heart Healthy Pack.” The goal of the event was to increase awareness about heart disease and related illnesses, as well as raise money for research, prevention and education programs. Through their collective efforts, the students raised nearly $5,000 for the American Heart BASKETS TOWARD HEALTH - Copiague Middle School students participated in Association. the school’s Hoops for Heart fundraiser event with all proceeds going to the American Heart Association. Learn to Draw with Art Teacher Amy begins on Tuesday, May 3rd, from 4:15 to 5:15 p.m. and will run for five weeks. The cost of this class is $63 and includes all supplies. Children are instructed using a step-by-step approach to drawing. They will learn to draw various subject matter, including portraits, landscapes, still life, animals and master art works. Random Rambles By: Jamie Lynn Ryan It’s been a rough year. Less than four months in and, well, I know many people who are already looking for a do-over. Sure, every period of time has its ups and downs, highs and lows. But honestly, since the moment the ball dropped in Times Square this past New Year’s Eve, it seems that everything began falling right along with it. At least it’s Spring. There is something uplifting about sunshine-filled afternoons and ﬂower blossoms that does bring a smile to the face, however ﬂeeting it may be. And of course, those sunworshippers among us have to be looking forward to

summer and beach outings and barbeques. But until then… It’s April. April 15th, to be exact, as I write these words. Tax Day (although, technically speaking, we were graced with a few extra days tacked on to the filing deadline this year). The Easter Bunny has come and gone. Baseball diamonds are abuzz with activity. Pretty soon, school will be out of session and the parks and pools will be ﬂooded with families having fun. And so it goes. From dawn until dusk, one season into the next, day after day, week after week, month after month; until, before you know it, a decade has passed in the blink of an eye. In just a couple of

weeks, I will be celebrating my 11th year as editor and columnist at this very paper. How much has changed in that span of time… The best thing we can do – the only thing, really – is to embrace each day, with all its nuances, and appreciate whatever it may bring into our respective lives. The list of things beyond our control is endless; the key to happiness lies in how we react to them, what we learn from them, and how we use them to better ourselves as individuals. I’m no philosopher, but that much I’ve picked up in my 33 years roaming this planet. Here’s wishing everyone a brighter tomorrow… and the day after… and the day after…

The Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence, Inc. (LICADD) was awarded a $5,000 grant from the Richard & Mary Morrison Foundation for the Building Unique Dynamic and Diverse Youth (BUDDY) program. The highly successful BUDDY (Building Unique, Dynamic, and Diverse Youth) Mentoring Program was established in 2009 with $150,000 in competitive federal grant funding from the Administration for Children and Families, BUDDY addresses the critical needs of the most vulnerable members of our community, children whose parents have been incarcerated due to substance abuse. Members of the Gemini Youth Orchestra Concert Winds were welcomed recently to the March General Meeting of the Suffolk County Legislature. Under the direction of Valerie Jones, the Concert Winds Ensemble performed our National Anthem and Trumpet Voluntary to open the meeting. The Gemini Youth Orchestras is composed of 250 musicians from across Long Island, who perform in ensembles including the Concert Winds, Philharmonia, String Orchestra, Repertory and Youth Symphony. The concert will be held at the United

Suffolk County Legislature Presiding Officer DuWayne Gregory attended the annual Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) New York Metro Law Enforcement Recognition Luncheon held Thursday, April 7th, at the Crest Hollow County Club. “It was an honor and a pleasure to be invited to MADD’s annual luncheon honoring the dedicated police officers who are in the front lines of the battle against drunk driving,” said Presiding Officer Gregory. “I was especially glad to see Suffolk County Police, Suffolk Sheriffs

but grown BUDDY into a robust program that has to date, successfully matched 75 at-risk children with screened/ trained adult mentors. Enrollment in the program has quadrupled over the last three year with 61% of matches recommitting to a second year in the program. LICADD’s BUDDY Mentoring Program provides children with a positive adultchild relationship on a stable and predictable basis. The BUDDY Program’s goals are to enhance the protective factors in children of parents incarcerated by helping them to create predictable and attached relationships with one or more adults; promote and facilitate participation by underserved youth in educational and cultural activities that enhance their academic, cultural and social

competency skills, build self-esteem and develop self-confidence. These activities provide opportunities for our children to learn respect for diverse cultures, avoid unsafe and destructive behaviors including gang participation, bullying and experimentation with drugs and alcohol and to ensure that young people’s risk factors are identified and addressed promptly through direct service provision and/ or referrals to ancillary services. This program further facilitates the delivery of a wide range of support services to at-risk children of incarcerated parents helping to break the multi-generational cycle incarceration frequently fueled by addiction. “We are so grateful to the Richard & Mary Morrison Foundation for supporting this important program. LICADD will continue

to work with partner agencies to bring about increased support for these most vulnerable children.” says Executive Director Steve Chassman. For over 60 years, LICADD has successfully delivered evidence-based programs designed to prevent and treat substance abuse and addiction. LICADD offers crisis intervention, screenings, brief interventions, referrals to treatment and several family education workshops to help Long Islanders struggling with the effects of addiction.
