Installation Dinner Suffolk County Legislature Presiding Officer DuWayne Gregory joined the Amityville Fire Department this weekend at its 113th annual Installation Dinner and Awards Ceremony. The event, held on Saturday, April 7th at the Amityville Fire Department’s headquarters, celebrated

Presiding Officer Gregory assisted in the swearing-in of incoming officers and presented a proclamation to retiring Chief Jeffrey T. Erath to thank him for over 40 years of service to the Amityville community. “On behalf of the residents of Suffolk

County, I would like to thank Jeffrey Erath for nearly half a decade of service to the Amityville Fire Department,” said Presiding Officer Gregory. “The sacrifices made by the brave men and women who volunteer to put their lives on the line for our protection and safety on a daily basis are truly worthy of recognition.”

Hoping to raise awareness, the student council at Deauville Gardens West Elementary School in the Copiague School District participated in the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s Pennies for Patients fundraising program from March 8th-29th. In total,

the student council raised $1,124.92. The student council, made up of third- through fifth-graders and advised by Christine Orlando, placed collection boxes in each of the classrooms and made a special visit to each class to talk about the importance of donating to the cause.

The students made afternoon announcements to motivate their classmates to participate in the campaign. Deauville Gardens West students could volunteer to collect individually to contribute to their class’ fundraising efforts. The top fundraising class earned a prize.

You temporarily lose control of your plans and goals in your life because you simply cannot imagine life without your partner. You lose control of your ability to sleep through the night. You become so overwhelmed you lose your sense of focus and can only focus on the simplest of deeds and tasks for extremely brief amounts of time. You get bombarded with requests for this paper or that form. Everybody needs something from you now. Your whole life seems to be out of control. And it is. You could not control what happened to your spouse. You cannot control the loss of income. Nor can you control requests from people. But you can control your response to all these problems. Take time. Do not make any hasty decisions. Do not let anyone pressure you into another life changing decision until you regain your sense of control over your life. You should take at least one year to decide to move out of your house. Focus on the small tasks. Get through one day at a time. Accept help from those who sincerely offer you help. When you cannot cope with all the details, sit down; close your eyes and rest. You will regain control of your life, but it will take time and it does become extremly frustrating at times. But little by little, you will regain control of all aspects of your life. Your life will be different but once again, it will be your life. Take Me Out To The Ballgame!

Don’t Forget the Tomatoes I have recently taken to food shopping more frequently, with the intention of picking up “just a few things” during each visit to the grocery store, eliminating the need for a cart and - theoretically - such a large expense in one shot. The cost, well, it depends on the particular outing and what items are on the menu. The cart… let’s just say I have yet to master the art of consolidating my purchases to one of those convenient little hand baskets they provide by the front entrance. Case in point: on my last trip to one of my favorite food stores, I meandered through the aisles selecting a bit of this and that. At about the halfway point, as I was nearing the deli counter, I noticed that my basket was nearly overﬂowing. The gentleman taking my cold cut order seemed to note the same fact simultaneously,

remarking, Are you gonna carry all that?? I’m going to try, I replied with a smile, while bracing my basket on the edge of the shelving in front of me. My order complete, I continued on my way into the next section of the store, surveying the shelves to determine how many more items I could possibly carry. As I contemplated, I felt a tap on the shoulder. I turned to find a man standing with my cold cuts, those just purchased several steps back, in hand, apparently having fetched them from the ﬂoor behind me. Whoops. On to the produce section, where I attempted to juggle tomatoes while picking out cucumbers. And there they went, rolling down the aisle, nearly taking out a young mother and her child. Mom, it’s a little red ball!

the girl squealed, taking off after the tomato. Oh my, I’m so sorry! I hurriedly gathered up the rogue produce and headed to checkout, resigned to the fact that I simply could not carry one more thing. There, I was met with a similarly bewildered look from the cashier, who watched as I piled my merchandise onto the conveyer belt, one item at a time. Do you have bags? she asked. Why yes, yes I do, three in fact. She chuckled, Three bags and no cart? Yes, I replied sheepishly. Yes, I recognize the irony in that. After my total was calculated {not quite as inexpensive as planned}, the cashier said Here’s a tip: even if you think you’re only running in for a gallon of milk, take a cart. Always. Take a cart. One day, I’ll learn.

On June 6, 1870, Thomas Welwood and Charles S. Schlier founded the City of Breslau, named for the town where Schlier was born, Breslau, Germany. (Wellwood Avenue is incorrectly spelled because of a clerk’s error in the 1870’s.) In addition to residential real estate, Welwood and Schlier encouraged the growth of local manufacturing, especially sewing notions.

The village name was changed to Lindenhurst in 1890 in an effort to quell some of the negative publicity caused by a bitter legal dispute between Welwood and Schlier. The name Lindenhurst was derived by the fact that many German settlers planted Linden seeds, which lined the streets of the bucolic community.
