You may think you know where you will be one year from today. Think again. Wherever you are right now; the people who are around you, the places you frequent, your relationship status, financial status, health status... even the area in which you reside are all outward projections of your inner world and your current stage of development. In the blink of an eye you could find yourself doing a slow circle turnabout as you wonder, “Whoa! How did I get here? My world has done a sudden 180.” It’s as if you have taken a quantum leap, but that leap has actually been a long time in the making. It is a result of your personal life cycles. I know what you are thinking. “That’s an interesting thought, but a year from now my life will most likely be pretty much the same.” That could be, but let me ask you this... Think about the year you met your spouse, the year you unexpectedly changed career paths or fate might have brought you to a new city (maybe fate brought you to Long Island, NY from someplace else), the

year you found out you were going to be a parent for the first time. I could list a hundred more examples. Who knew as the clock struck 12 midnight on New Year’s Day of that year, that those life changing events would be coming your way. Life holds so many mysteries for us to unfold; sometimes pleasant and sometimes not so pleasant. What I have come to know is that no matter what you are going through, there are always goodies waiting around a new corner. I can honestly say, I have never gone through a personal trial without something magical coming out of it; a special person, a new opportunity, an important revelation. I have also come to know that life looks most messy before things fall into place. At that point, all you can say is, “Wow!,” and “Thank you.” We go through cycles of rest, growth and then reaping rewards. We know we are in a cycle of rest when life seems status quo, the needle doesn’t move very much and we are just going about our business with no significant

ripples. Life seems fairly effortless and predictable in this cycle. It may even seem a bit boring at times, and you long for a little spice. We know we are in a growth cycle when hard times come, life feels chaotic and overwhelming, we “just can’t seem to catch a break,” and we experience heavy and painful emotions. It is in our growth cycles where we do the most significant work and our soul achieves further expansion. This expansion prepares us for our next reward cycle. When we pass the tests we are given during our growth cycles, we will then (often, when we least expect it) come into a new reward cycle. A reward cycle is recognizable to us because this is when we experience the goodies of life. Someone special comes into our path, doors seem to open up, a dream comes true, and life starts to feel great again. Suddenly, perspective is achieved. Any discomfort seems worth it, because it delivered us to a place of being able to receive the gift(s) we are now being given.

Place the mixture in a serving bowl, and stir thoroughly. 5. Cover and refrigerate for an hour or until serving time. 6. Remove from refrigerator and uncover. 7. Add salt and pepper to taste. 8. Place gazpacho into serving dishes. 9. Garnish with remaining cucumbers and cilantro and a piece of lime and 1 t. of avocado. Enjoy! Copiague School District’s Superintendent of Schools Dr. Kathleen Bannon was selected as an honoree at the Town of Babylon’s National Women’s History month celebration on March 25. At the 30th annual

Roofing Solutions To Environmental Concerns (NAPSI)—More and more Americans are calling the nation’s cities home. According to 2010 Census data, an estimated 80.7 percent of Americans now live in urban areas—up from 79 percent in 2000. Not only does this urban population increasingly tax the country’s infrastructure, but it is also having an effect—both directly and indirectly—on the environment. The Heat Is On The urban heat island (UHI) effect is a phenomenon in which metropolitan areas are typically warmer than nearby rural areas mainly due to the large areas of paved surfaces and buildings that capture the sun’s energy, hold it and

slowly radiate the heat back out into the air. The concentration of heat in these densely populated regions creates additional health risks for residents due to heat exposure and the enhanced formation of air pollutants, especially ozone. Rooftops, roads and parking lots comprise a large percentage of the man-made surface area in urban areas. When analyzing effective UHI mitigation strategies, scientists at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory determined that widespread deployment of “cool roofs” and “cool pavements” would decrease urban temperatures, which in turn could offset some or

all of the projected future warming trends. According to the U.S. Department of Energy, a cool roof is one that has been designed to reflect more sunlight and absorb less heat than a standard roof. Beyond the building itself, cool roofs can also benefit the environment by: • Reducing local air temperatures; • Lowering peak electricity demand, which can help prevent power outages; and • Reducing power plant emissions, including carbon dioxide, sulfur dioxide, nitrogen oxides and mercury. In order to help protect the environment and meet increasingly stringent

ordinances calling for cool roof technology, 3M developed Cool Roofing Granules. These granules are used in shingles that can be energy efficient, solar reflective and economically friendly. This technology can reduce urban heating as well as lower energy consumption in climates with year-round cooling needs. In addition, many of the shingles that contain 3M Cool Granules meet Energy Star requirements, making them the premier choice for green building. Further, the granules are available in a wide variety of rich colors that can create the perfect shingle color blend. The Eradication of Smog Another problem in

urban areas is smog pollution, caused by a buildup of nitrogen oxides in the air. An estimated four in 10 Americans currently live in counties with unhealthy levels of particle pollution. To combat this growing concern, 3M recently launched Smog-reducing Granules, which help remove smog pollution using roofing shingles. Integrated throughout a shingle’s surface, the granules are designed with a specialized photocatalytic coating applied to the base mineral. As sunlight hits the shingles, radicals are generated, transforming nitrogen oxide gases into water-soluble ions, thereby improving air quality. “3M is leading the way

with roofing technology solutions for improving environmental impacts on human health and welfare,” said Frank Klink, Ph.D., senior laboratory manager, 3M. “The roofing granules are a first for residential asphalt shingles. Business Olympics Goes Mobile 15 judges including board of education members, administrators and local business owners. Team Vivacity, Team Mobifuel and Team P.U.S.H. each presented their ideas during a 10-minute pitch. The judges had an opportunity for a question and answer period following the presentation. Each team created a

commercial along with supporting marketing and promotional materials. The winning team was Team Vivacity for their mobile spa business. Team members were Aleksandra Bugajczyk, Kriyal Patel, Iris Romero, Abigail Romero and Owen Rosenberg. All of the teams will share more than $3,000 in prizes.

Their mission is to provide a low cost solution to the growing problem of waterfront pollution through public awareness, community action and your participation. S.P.L.A.S.H. stands for Stop Polluting, Littering and Save Harbors.

Products used to wash boat hull sand decks often contain toxic ingredients such as chlorine, phosphates and ammonia. Degreasers dry the natural oils fish need for their gills to take in oxygen. For boats that are in the water, use cleaning methods that prevent or contain the release of pollutants to surface waters. Below are a few actions you can take: 1) When possible, remove the boat from the water and perform cleaning where debris can be captured and properly disposed. 2) Use fresh water to clean your boat after every use. 3) Use environmentally friendly cleaning methods and products. Here are a list of a few alternatives to toxic products: Elbow Grease, Hydogen Peroxide, Baking Soda, Salt, Apple Cider Vinegar, Baby Oil.

This organization holds Beach, Bay and Waterway Clean-Ups and operates several other projects such as Street Storm Drains, Ocean-Bay Water Exchange, No Wake Zones, Clean Marina Program, Youth Education Programs and more. They have successfully rescued 2,498,267 pounds of trash from our waters! Also, asside from collecting trash they also have had an amazing impact on the amount of sewage being dumped in our bays. To reduce the flow of trash into our bays, they have collaborated on the funding and installation of more than 4,000 street storm drain inserts in Nassau County. Operation S.P.L.A.S.H. works diligently to partner with industry businesses, non-profits, government agencies and academic institution’s striving to promote comprehensive understanding of local

Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School held its fourth annual Voice to Voice empowerment session in the school’s library on March 27. The goal of the initiative is to motivate and empower one another through teamwork and conversation. It was developed to provide opportunities for young women to gain awareness of their individual and collective skills, experiences and professional goals. Walter G. Eason welcomed the attendees and introduced the school’s women’s Madrigal Choir, under the direction of Gina Occhiogrosso, who performed “Rise Up.” The theme of this year’s event was resilience as showcased through the guest speaker and the reflective activities. This year’s guest speaker was Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School speech and language teacher Valarie Williams. Ms. Williams shared her life story and spoke about how resiliency has helped her persevere through

Session on Resiliency some trying life lessons. “My goal is to enlighten, encourage and inspire you with my story,” she said. “I’m sharing my story to show you all that you can overcome every obstacle in your way. You have the power to live your life with resiliency.” After a brief question and answer session, the students worked in teams and reflected on the lessons learned. SPRING INTO LEARNING - Spring has sprung at Deauville Gardens East Elementary School in the Copiague School District and third graders are hard at work honing their literacy and mathematical skills this April. Students in Ms. Masure’s class are working on fraction fun by creating a bulletin board using fraction flowers. Ms. Newman’s class also created a bulletin board to show off their poetic prowess and Ms. Nicolini’s class used board games as a fun way to practice their math skills.
