Stony Brook University Hospital Accepting i-Pad Donations for Telehealth Distancing Measures Members of the community have been reaching out and asking how they can help the healthcare professionals and those afflicted with COVID-19 pandemic. One very important way: we need an influx of iPads to keep our inpatients connected to their providers and their families. Anyone who has an iPad that is not being used, please consider donating to Stony Brook University Hospital. We will repurpose the donated device to provide telecommunication for our patients to connect
with our medical staff. We are looking for about one hundred devices of a supported iPad model. Before donation, the device should be cleaned, reset (click here for instructions), and placed in a zip lock bag if possible with a viable power chord. It takes a team effort to convert these devices into a secure patient friendly solution. We will do our best to make your gift count and give someone comfort during these remarkable times. The donations of medical supplies and comfort care items such as gum, lip balm, tissues and
snacks have been pouring in and we appreciate the community’s response. We’ve also received many video messages of support and are sharing those throughout the hospital. Please keep them coming! Park Avenue Student’s Artwork Honors A Female Pioneer Jenny Cividanes, a fifth grader at Park Avenue Memorial Elementary School in the Amityville Union Free School District, was a winner in the Women’s History Month Art Contest hosted by New York State Assemblywoman Kimberly Jean-Pierre. The contest was open to fifth grade students in the Town of Babylon. Jenny
drew a picture of Katherine Johnson, a mathematician who calculated and analyzed flight paths for spacecraft, including journeys to the moon. In 2015, she received the Presidential Medal of Freedom from President Barack Obama. She died earlier this year at the age of 101. Jenny said she was very inspired by Katherine
E-Sports Team Goes Live Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School’s e-sports club gives students the chance to compete against players near and far in a virtual setting. While the club just launched in early March, the e-sports team has a new classroom that was transformed into their online gaming headquarters. Run by Copiague Middle School teacher Stephen DiGiorgio, high school students have the opportunity to join the club. Ten new gaming computer setups were installed thanks to the help of the district’s director of technology Kelly Urraro. In addition to the computer setups, a room was renovated in the back of Mr. DiGiorgio’s classroom and transformed into a gaming room or e-sports
room. “It is an impressive sight to say the least,” said Mr. DiGiorgio. “It is not a big room by any means, but the amount of technology that is crammed in there is nothing short of amazing.” After the equipment was set up and ready to go, the team was registered to compete against other schools in league competition called PlayVs. “This is an incredible league that has close ties with game developers and even big name media outlets like ESPN,” DiGiorgio said. “PlayVs has three games they offer leagues for right now: League of Legends, Rocket League and Smite. Currently, I have one League of Legends team (five players per team) and three Rocket League
teams (three players per team). The league plans to add the very popular Fortnite to competitions next year. I know there are hundreds of kids at Copiague who would go above and beyond to compete in their favorite game.” Unfortunately, the Copiague team was only able to compete for two weeks, but during that short time one of the Rocket League teams was experiencing great success by going undefeated in all of their scheduled matches (3-0). “My other teams are still learning the ins and outs of competitive play, but one thing is for sure: these kids are excited about doing what they love on a competitive level,” DiGiorgio said.

Essential Staff Providing Care For Animals On Campus Amid Coronavirus (Covid19) Pandemic North Shore Animal League America’s Adoption Center is currently conducting adoption by appointment only. Our Adoption Team is contacting pre-approved adopters with a scheduled day and time to complete their adoption. The health and wellbeing of NSALA staff, volunteers, adopters, and the community remains our priority at this time. We currently have over 40 dogs of various ages and sizes on campus, as well as more than 100 felines, from kittens to older cats, all looking for loving homes. As always, the animals on the NSALA Port Washington campus are being well-cared for by our devoted staff. In addition to finding homes for more than 110 canines, some of whom were from our recent Mill Dog rescue (we saved 100 dogs and puppies from deplorable
conditions with some going to our area shelter partners,) we have also placed more than 30 animals into foster homes. During this time, the Alex Lewyt Veterinary Medical Center will remain open to see sick patients and emergency cases only. While we are doing adoptions by appointment, NSALA’s Adoption Center is temporarily closed to the general public in accordance with New York State Governor Andrew Cuomo’s statewide directives and to control the number of people in the Adoption Center at any one time. Pet owners can rest easy that there is no reason to believe that dogs or cats in the United States might be a source of infection for the new coronavirus disease — COVID-19 — or cause its spread according to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) in Atlanta, Georgia. And so far, according to the CDC, there have been no reports of pets becoming sick with COVID-19. This coronavirus appears to be primarily transmitted from human to human. As a pet owner, you may have heard of canine coronavirus, an intestinal infection in dogs, especially puppies, and feline coronavirus, which can cause feline infectious peritonitis (FIP). These types of coronaviruses have been around for quite some time and are not associated with the current outbreak. To protect yourself, your family, and possibly even
your pets, from this new coronavirus, you should follow these precautions: • Frequently wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water (use hand sanitizer with more than 60 percent alcohol if you can’t wash) • Avoid close contact with people who are sick—stay at least three feet away • Cover your mouth/ nose with a tissue when you cough or sneeze, then throw away the used tissues and wash your hands • Stay at home if you are sick • Sanitize often-used surfaces in your home and office If you do become sick with COVID-19, how then should you care for your pet? The CDC recommends that you restrict contact with pets and other animals just as you would with people. Ask another member of your
household to care for your pets while you are sick. If you must do it yourself, wash your hands before and after you interact and wear a facemask. In a small bowl, combine the pecans, brown sugar and cinnamon. Set aside. Sift the flour, baking soda, baking powder, and nutmeg through a fine-mesh strainer into a medium bowl. In the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with the paddle attachment, beat together the butter and sugar on low speed until light and fluffy, 2 to 3 minutes. Add the eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition. Scrape down the sides of the bowl with a spatula, then add the roasted bananas, sour cream and vanilla. Beat until incorporated. With the mixer running on low speed, spoon in the flour mixture and mix until just combined. Pour the batter into the prepared pan and smooth the top with a spatula. Sprinkle evenly with the pecan topping. Bake for 40 to 45 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean with a few crumbs attached. Let cool for 10 minutes before slicing and serving.

Many people choose to be cremated nowadays because of personal preference, or because it is less expensive, or for other personal or family reasons. These are all acceptable reasons, and the only reason cremation would not be permissible for a Catholic would be if it were being done as a way of making a public statement about not believing in the resurrection of the body, which is one of the tenets of our faith. Although cremation is permitted, the Church does have the clear preference that, whenever possible, cremation should take place after the Funeral Mass, so that the body of the deceased can be at the Mass. This is important because a human being is a body-soul unity, and therefore the body is an integral part of our personhood. It is the physical body that encounters grace through the physical signs of the sacraments: the body that was washed in Baptism, anointed in Confirmation, and nourished in the Eucharist should be present for the Funeral Mass. Nevertheless, if for some reason cremation does occur before the Funeral Mass, it is permissible to bring the cremated remains into church and have them at the Mass. Notice the term that is used: “cremated remains.” The Church asks that we use this term instead of the term “cremains”, as the Church feels that “cremated remains” is more dignified as a reference to the mortal remains of the Christian body.

An aspect of cremation that is often misunderstood is that the final disposition of the cremated remains must be exactly the same as for a body. Cremated remains must be buried in the ground in a cemetery, be entombed in a niche in a mausoleum or some other appropriate structure in a cemetery, or be buried at sea. It is not permissible for Catholics to keep the cremated remains at home, nor is it permissible to sprinkle the ashes (in the ocean or over a field, for example), nor may the ashes be divided up and placed into jewelry (I’m not kidding about that... it’s actually an option in the funeral industry). The Catholic Church teaches that the same reverence and dignity that is given to a dead body must also be given to the cremated remains. As he stepped up to the free throw line in the fourth quarter, Amityville Memorial High School basketball player Myles Goddard took a glimpse into the stands, where he saw his mother and her handmade sign. It was a countdown to his 1,000th career point as a member of the varsity squad, and the number on the sign read “01.” Myles sank his shot and cemented his placed in Warriors history. Myles entered the Suffolk County overall title game against Brentwood 17 points short of the milestone and finished the game with 19. As a junior, he will have another full year to keep adding to his already impressive points total. “It felt good, but it felt better after because in the moment, I was focused on
the winning the game,” he said. Amityville, the Suffolk Class A champion, defeated Class B champion Brentwood, 80-72. He started playing basketball when he was 5 years old and joined his first organized league a few years later, playing with the CYO at St. Martin of Tour Church. In eighth grade, Myles was on the middle school basketball team and was elevated to varsity as a freshman. Myles credits his success to a strong work ethic, as well as the support of his family, friends, coaches and teammates. He explained that he constantly strives for improvement and that keeps him focused during practices. When watching basketball on television, he is studying the game. After
high school, Myles hopes to play at the collegiate level for a Division I school, and has aspirations of making it to the pros. More important than his individual point total is the success of the team, he said. Myles was a member of the 2018 Warriors that won the state basketball title, and he hopes to bring the trophy back to Amityville before he graduates. “Myles is an incredible student-athlete,” said Evan Farkas, director of athletics, physical education and health. “He’s a hard worker and he’s a leader not only on the court but in school. He’s a role model for our other athletes. We congratulate Myles on his 1,000th point as he did it in one of the biggest moments of his career.”
