or the 11th consecutive year, students in Copiague Middle School’s Builders Club rallied together to raise money for the Makea-Wish Foundation to benefit a sick child in the Suffolk County area. This year, each member of the Builders Club sold 40 hand-made holiday ornaments, crafted by ill children with their story printed on the reverse side. Students raised more than $850. Of course, there are a million factors that could possibly contribute to such sudden alterations in behavior; but, if you’re like me, you immediately look for the root of the problem. Is it my fault? Did I do something, say something, unknowingly

cause some perceived slight…what? Chances are, it’s something else entirely. (Read: Everything is not always about you!) The thing is, when you’re in a foul frame of mind, it’s difficult to see beyond the black cloud. Best everyone stay out of your way until the storm has passed, as you can’t be held accountable for your tone, whether impatient, annoyed, indifferent… in short, anything but friendly. Negativity breeds more negativity, and those who dare to cross paths with those in such a state are just asking for trouble. And so the cycle continues. Day after day of trying to dodge the slings and arrows of those who

would bring you down to their level, if you let them. It’s an effort, to be sure, to block out and continue on your merry way. But what other choice do we have? There comes a point when you need to avoid being sucked into the cycle. I often envy those who seem to exude nothing but positive vibes, who appear to be in a constant state of contentment. Is it genuine? How do they achieve such a mentality and, better yet, maintain it continuously? I suppose, even if it is merely a means of keeping up appearances, such a skill should be applauded. Fake it ‘til you make it, as they say. Perhaps they should hold a class on that.

The American Heart Association is seeking volunteers for the Home Is Where The Heart Is Designer Showhouse, which is open Tuesdays through Sundays from April 17th until May 31st. The Showhouse is located at 393 Oyster Bay Road in Mill Neck. Help is needed to staff the beautifully decorated rooms and to greet visitors. The shifts are 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. or 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., Tuesdays through Fridays and 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. or 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays. Survivor Visits A Hungarian citizen who survived Hitler’s concentration camps paid a visit to students at Edmund W. Miles Middle School not to share his experience of the past, but to warn kids of the dangers posed in the present. Stephen Berger was a 16 year-old high school boy living in German-allied Hungary with his mother, father and younger sister when Hitler caught wind of a conspiracy among Hungarian leaders to withdraw the country’s support for Germany. As a result, Hitler invaded Hungary in March of 1944 and set up a temporary ghetto for Jewish Hungarians. Berger and his family were sent to the ghetto before they were shipped off in a cattle car with their Hungarian neighbors to be divided among the concentration camps in Austria and Germany.

It was Berger’s quick thinking and skilled background that saved his and his family’s life. Rather than sending his mother and sister off to Auschwitz, Berger was permitted by the SS to take them with him to work as slave labor in a Vienna factory. Eventually the Russian army broke through German lines and liberated Vienna in April of 1945. Berger hid his mother and sister in a laundry cubicle in the basement of an apartment building where residents were waiting out the street fighting. Berger tried to assimilate among the apartment building residents, fearful that one of them might turn him over to the SS. In a final stroke of luck, the SS soldier just about to check everyone’s identification in the building, was shot by a Russian soldier before he could enter. Berger, his mother and sister walked

back to Hungary from Vienna, where they were eventually reunited with his father. His mother’s parents, along with 27 other members of his family, died during the Holocaust. Now at age 87, Berger tells his story to young adults in an attempt to make them aware of the dangerous ideologies that can lead to another genocide in the future. “History is so important,” Berger told the rapt audience of students at Edmund W. Miles. “The next generation of victims are those who neglect to study their history and don’t heed the warnings.” Berger’s visit was coordinated by social studies teacher Frank O’Brien. After his presentation in the library, Berger answered questions from students and took time to meet with them individually.

Community Clean-Up To welcome the spring season, students in the Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School’s SOUL Environmental Club recently took part in Suffolk County’s Adopta-Highway program, cleaning the area in front of their high school – spanning Dixon Avenue from Great Neck Road to Sunrise Highway.

Under the advisement of Joseph Mannix, members of the club are responsible for organizing monthly cleanups along the street and sidewalk. According to Mannix, the club became the first high school in Suffolk County to Adopt-a-Highway last year and hopes to inspire other schools across Long Island and the country to

participate in a similar program. “The kids feel that they have a direct control over the pollution in their neighborhood and community,” said Mannix. “Anyone can get involved with this and I think it’s a great thing that makes an immediate impact on the environment we live in.”

She worked for more than fifteen years for private enterprises such as Ernst & Young, The News Corporation and Canon. Soles For Souls For the fourth consecutive year, students in Copiague Middle School’s Builders Club, under the advisement of Maria Ostrofsky, collected and donated lightly worn shoes to benefit the homeless and less fortunate in the New York

City area. Working in conjunction with the Give Your Sole non-for-profit organization, more than 25 members of the Builders Club worked together to properly bag pairs of shoes for men, women and children. Donated by

students and members of the community, students collected more than 100 pairs of shoes. Each bag contained 20 pairs of shoes that were picked up and brought to the Bowery Mission in Manhattan.

Making Wishes Come True The Edmund W. Miles Middle School chapter of the National Junior Honor Society (NJHS) was asked to participate in the Coins for Wishes challenge by the Make A Wish Foundation. During the month of March, they raised money for two boys from Suffolk County suffering from a

serious illness. Each NJHS member was assigned to a homeroom and each Friday, they visited the homerooms to collect the Make A Wish boxes. The students counted the money and then returned the boxes to the homeroom teachers. When the campaign

was over, the students were invited to meet the children for whom they raised the money. A send off ceremony was held at the TD Bank in Lake Ronkonkoma. Edmund W. Miles came in second place in the challenge, raising a total of $1,880.60.

Fund-Razor In an effort to raise money for childhood cancer research, students Curtis Doxey, Jared Haynes, and Angelo Lupinacci from Deauville Gardens East Elementary School in the Copiague School District recently participated in local St. Baldrick’s events where they raised money by shaving their heads for the

Edmund W. Miles Middle School was a recent stop for the traveling education program FMA Live!, an interactive hip-hop influenced crash course in physics. Created with collaboration between Honeywell Hometown Solutions and NASA, the popular show visited the middle school on April 1st to teach Sir Isaac Newton’s laws of motion in a fun and memorable way. The show, titled “Forces in Motion” featured three live actors using hip-hop lyrics and dance to teach the laws of physics while also demonstrating those

laws with humor and hands-on experiments. Select students at Edmund W. Miles were volunteered to take the stage and participate in various physical demonstrations, such as jumping onto a Velcro wall wearing a special suit and kicking a massive soccer ball to illustrate the affect of mass on velocity. Teachers at the middle school also got involved as social studies teacher Frank O’Brien and English teacher John Katsigiorgis battled it out in Sumo wrestling suits. Special Education teacher Allyson Kretz also volunteered to

have applesauce dumped on her head as a lesson, in part, on gravity. FMA Live travels all over the country and has brought their STEMinspired lessons to more than 400,000 students. The program aims to inspire students to learn and possibly pursue a career in science, math, engineering and technology. The team collaboratively raised more

than $15,000 to benefit childhood cancer research. “It is not often students at this age embrace an activity such as this outside of school,” said Deauville Gardens East Principal Joseph Buccello. “They raised a lot of money for a great cause.”

We mourn and grieve. We get depressed and angry. If we lose sight of the light at the end of the tunnel, we become overwhelmed by what would have been instead of coping and dealing with what is. Life is not easy and it is definitely not always fair. Our goal in dealing with all the trouble in life is to try to make the world around us the world it should be. By that I mean, we help ourselves by helping others. We feel better when we make others feel better. We can’t change the past nor can we change the present, but we can strive to change the future. We can all strive to make the world a better place, not only for ourselves but for our children and our children’s children.

The Amityville Memorial High School Drama Club put on a weekend performance of the classic Broadway show “Little Shop of Horrors” March 20th-22nd in the high school auditorium. Starring Andrew Abate as Seymore, Aidan McGlone and Meghan Jacobsen as Audrey and Ruben Fernandez as the cranky Mr. Mushnick, along with an ensemble cast of street urchins and townsfolk, the performance dazzled audiences with a sharp set

and talented singers. The off-beat hit show about a down-and-out young man living on skid row and his flesh-eating plant, was originally a low-budget film produced in 1960 and once again in 1986, starring Rick Moranis and Steve Martin as the dentist. The Amityville drama production was directed by Melissa Asbell, with help from Assistant Director Gerald Asbell. Other stars of the show included Deborah Bichotte,

Alisha Alexandre, Quanisha Alexandre, Amanda Boegle, Melissa Beresoff, Lawrence Haave, Shiloh Bennett, Kyle Hobson, Jahleel Butler, Kiara Kearse and Patrick Abate, along with little stars Kira Lee and Tiffany Asbell. Transit Safety The Suffolk Region PTA, in collaboration with the New York School Bus Contractors Association and the Suffolk County Chapter of the New York Association for Pupil Transportation, recently held a special session on child school bus safety.
