Amityville Memorial High School sophomores Jared Davis and Alexa Victor were selected to receive the Students Building Bridges Award from the Jewish Community Relations Council of Long Island. They were nominated by social studies Chairwoman

Dawn Mizrachi, their Advanced Placement world history teacher. The award recognizes students for their efforts in bridging the community, teaching tolerance and completing services that aim to advocate change and improve lives of others.

Jared and Alexa will be publicly honored at Suffolk County’s Yom Hashoah Holocaust Remembrance Day program on Thursday, May 3rd, at Suffolk County Community College. They will each receive a citation from an elected official and a certificate from JCRC-LI.

18th Annual

City Strolls Springtime in New York. These words bring to mind many fond memories of days spent adventuring through Central Park and traversing the city streets from the upper west side all the way down to the Brooklyn Bridge and back again. It’s true what they say that you can literally spend an entire day in just a few square blocks and still not manage to see even a fraction of what that neighborhood has to offer. While I have resided within a mere hour’s drive of Manhattan for the entirety of my life, I am ashamed to say there are countless landmarks and tourist attractions I have yet to take the opportunity to appreciate. In recent years, I have traversed miles of city blocks on foot with one particularly adventurous friend for various shenanigans, some of which

have been documented in past columns - my futile attempt to cross as many of these “bucket list” items off of said list. From trying to time our return trip over the BK bridge to photograph sunset {while toting nearly an entire leftover pizza from Grimaldi’s} … to finding a “shortcut” through the Park that somehow managed to add about five miles to the journey … to winding up on the steps of Lincoln Center thoroughly out of breath, shoes in hand (documented in one of aforementioned past columns), just in the knick of time for the ballet … the stories are endless and, in retrospect, quite funny. And yet, there remain so many more nooks and crannies left to explore, museum exhibits to browse, restaurants to sample, culture to take in. Of course, there are

activities to indulge in during any season in New York; it’s just, the thought of exploring them seems particularly inviting in the spring. Perhaps this month, maybe next. Path to be determined. {And, inevitably, rerouted. Several times.} I have often thought how nice it would be to reside right there, at the center of it all. But, as with most things, it seems the daily routine is what ultimately wears on people and strips away the novelty of living in one of the greatest cities in the world. Visiting, however often - or seldom - it might be, keeps the perspective fresh and full of untapped adventure and excitement. So does randomly wandering the city streets with a good friend {and a spare pair of slippers} in tow. Happy trails!

Friends of Karen is a nonprofit organization that supports critically-ill children and their families. This year, they are celebrating their 40th anniversary; four decades of bringing help, hope and support to over 15,000 children and their families in the tri-state area. In 1978, Friends of Karen began with one family, one child, Karen MacInnes; and one inspired woman, Sheila Petersen, who wanted to sustain her close friends through the devastating illness of their daughter. Today, Friends of Karen serves hundreds of families by providing emotional, financial and advocacy support to children with life-threatening illnesses, and to their families in order to help keep them stable, functioning and able to cope, at no cost. To apply for help, a parent or guardian of the ill child must call the organization and speak to a member of their Family Support Team. Language Learners Each inductee received a certificate and a medal. Teachers Elisa Castro and Sandra Whitney introduced the 43 Spanish language students who were selected for membership, joining 10 students from Brooke Prestano’s French classes. Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School business students vied for a chance to be named the winner in this year’s Business Olympics on March 29th. Four teams of students competed in this year’s “Shark Tank” themed event in front of a panel of more than 15 judges including board of education members,

administrators and local business owners. Team Vis, Team STOMP, Team Medrano and Team Flypack each presented their ideas during a 10-minute pitch. The judges had an opportunity for a question and answer period following the presentation during a networking session. Each team created a

Honoring Deonte New York State wrestling champion Deonte Wilson has brought great pride to his school and community with his athletic prowess and kind heart, and he was fittingly honored during a special ceremony at Amityville Memorial High School. The Town of Babylon declared March 29th Deonte Wilson Day and Supervisor Richard Schaffer presented him with a proclamation. Deonte was joined by his family, coaches, high school and district administrators, and board of education trustees, who all attended to personally congratulate the senior. Among the words and phrases used to describe him: “determination,” “amazing young man” and “role model.” One of the top ranked high school wrestlers in the United States, Deonte was the state

wrestling champion in the 285-pound weight class and became a three-time All-American Wrestler as he finished second in the country at the wrestling nationals on March 25. He plans to continue wrestling in college and is currently in the process of selecting a school. “It feels pretty good when people call you one of the best in the nation,” Deonte said. “Knowing I accomplished so much, it means something to me and to the community.” Deonte, a member of the varsity team since eighth grade, said he wouldn’t have been able to make his dream come true without the support from his coaches and family. After winning the state title, he called his mother to wish her a happy birthday before sharing his news. He also discussed the importance of having a strong work ethic and

maintaining good grades. In addition to wrestling, he plays football in the fall and runs for the track team in the spring. “Aside from being an outstanding athlete, he’s the kindest, most caring person you would ever want to meet,” Principal Maria Andreotti said. “Deonte represents the best of what we have to offer as a school and as a district.” Speakers at the ceremony included Director of Athletics, Physical Education and Health Evan Farkas, head wrestling coach Greg McCoy and volunteer assistant coach Billy Maisel. “He’s worked extremely hard toward this goal and has put in so much work when it comes to his sport,” said coach McCoy. “He has reignited the Amityville wrestling program.”

How many times have you heard someone say “if only I had done things differently”, “if only he would have lived longer”. The world is full of “could haves” and “should haves”; but the reality is that we cannot change what has already taken place, we can only deal with what has taken place. Unfortunately, people die, tragedies happen and people young and old become very ill and do not recover. We cannot change these events, but we can change how we react and deal with these events. We mourn and grieve. We get depressed and angry. If we lose sight of the light at the end of the tunnel, we become overwhelmed by what would have been instead of coping and dealing with what is. Life is not easy and it is definitely not always fair. Our goal in dealing with all the trouble in life is to try to make the world around us the world it should be. By that I mean, we help ourselves by helping others. We feel better when we make others feel better. We can’t change the past nor can we change the present, but we can strive to change the future. Checking Out Colleges Amityville Memorial High School students explored their futures during the annual spring college fair on March 29th. Representatives were in attendance from more than 100 colleges and universities on Long Island, in the city, upstate and throughout the Northeast.

Attendees could also learn about opportunities in the military and law enforcement. Students traveled throughout the gymnasium and were able to ask questions about academic programs, athletics and extracurricular activities, scholarship opportunities,

on-campus housing and more. For underclassman, the college fair gave them a chance to understand admissions requirements, while seniors could learn about the next steps in the application process.

DISTINGUISHED STATUS - The Kiwanis Club of Amityville earned the status of “distinguished” for the 2016–2017 year.
