O’Connell Copiague High School demonstrated their theatrical talents when they brought to the stage the exuberant and colorful musical production of “Godspell.” Set in modern day New York City, “Godspell,” created by John-Michael Tebelak, follows a group of people who help the character “Jesus Christ”

Composed by Stephen Schwartz, the musical displays an eclectic blend of songs ranging in style from pop to vaudeville is employed as the story of Jesus’s life dances across the stage. In the end, Jesus’s messages of kindness, tolerance and love are vibrantly brought to life. The musical was directed

by Gina Occhiogrosso and included support from Assistant Director Michelle Budion, Choreographer Sylvia Walsh and many other skilled individuals. The cumulated efforts of faculty, staff and students resulted in an exceptional musical performance. “The students had a great time dong the show,” said Occhiogrosso. “It turned out to be a blast for all of us and we were really excited to put the show on for community.”

Coalition, explained the laws and regulations that support resident-centered care and how one can care for someone with dementia without drugs. Members of ADRC’s Legal Advisory Committee presented a special session titled “Planning for Long-Term Care through the Various Stages of Alzheimer’s Disease - Saving the family Home.” During the keynote discussion, Ms. Smith and Mr. Gasby shared with the audience the challenges they faced when Ms. Smith was diagnosed with earlyonset Alzheimer’s disease. They talked about the first time he noticed she had the disease, how it affected their marriage and how they are attempting to get elected officials to provide more federal funding for research, as well as funding for programs and services to help support the many

local families who are coping with a diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease. In addition, because of the high incidence rate of Alzheimer’s disease in the African-American population, Mr. Gasby stressed the need for more participation in clinical trials. After the keynote, guests enjoyed more breakout sessions, an ice cream social, and a plenary session featuring motivational speaker Jim Ryan. expectantly. And then there’s the chewing. The adorable motion he makes when consuming his special Betta flakes is nothing short of precious. Who knew fish had teeth! Aside from his daily meal, Buddy seems content to swim endless laps around his prized plant decoration, occasionally knocking it from the gravel in his mad exuberance. Once exhausted, he generally settles under one of the branches for a little floating shut-eye – with eyes wide open of course. That usually only lasts until the instant he spies me, as even the slightest

prospect of food ends any siesta. Sure, he may not be as entertaining as a puppy or kitten or some other furry critter, but Buddy provides his own unique level of amusement from beyond the bowl. I think he’s adjusted quite well to life as a member of my household. Of course, that may be said for anyone who feeds him but… I still say Buddy and I have developed a special bond. Here’s hoping for many more milestones celebrated with my new fishy friend – and many more meals consumed together!

Recognized For Coaching For the past 16 years, Copiague School District teacher and coach Carole Olsen has demonstrated her dedication and commitment to the enrichment of the women’s basketball program at Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School. On March 19th, following a successful 2014-2015 season, Olsen was the received the Suffolk County Women’s Basketball Coaches Association (SCWBCA) award for coaching excellence and League 3 Coach of the Year.

Selected by the executive board of the SCWBCA based on recommendations from league representatives and coaches, Olsen fit the criteria as an individual who has had a positive impact on women’s basketball in Suffolk County. League 3 coaches also recognized Olsen for the extraordinary talent and passion she possesses for coaching. In addition to a successful 2015 athletic season, the Copiague girls Varsity basketball team won three sportsmanship awards, another criteria for

each award. “The girls worked really hard and their improvement was tremendous. I am so proud of all of them,” said Olsen.

Christopher E. Bolt, the carrier’s commanding officer. “Our team is filled with highly qualified young adults – in many cases, 19 and 20 years old – and they’re out here launching and recovering aircraft, running a complex propulsion system safely, serving as air traffic controllers, operating sophisticated

electronics, and keeping this floating city alive and functioning. Their work ethic, enthusiasm, and esprit de corps are second to none. If you pick up a newspaper in any city and examine what other 19- and 20-year-olds are doing, there is no comparison to the level of responsibility our Sailors hold. That caliber of Sailor is what has earned us the title of America’s Flagship.” USS Ronald Reagan is also a self-sustaining, mobile airport and, like each of the Navy’s aircraft carriers, is designed for a 50-year service life. While underway, the ship carries more than 70 jets, helicopters and other aircraft, all of which take off from and land on the carrier’s 4.5-acre flight deck. Four powerful catapults launch aircraft off the bow of the ship. After lowering a tail hook that protrudes from the rear of the aircraft,

jets and aircraft land by snagging a steel cable called an arresting wire. After an extended maintenance period spent pier side in San Diego, USS Ronald Reagan is preparing for its move to Japan, as part of the first ever three-hull aircraft carrier crew and hull swap. It will replace USS George Washington in Japan and become part of the U.S. 7th Fleet forward-deployed naval forces (FDNF) in Yokosuka, Japan. As part of this rebalance strategy to increase the Navy’s presence in the Pacific Fleet, USS Theodore Roosevelt will move from Norfolk, Va., to San Diego. In 2008, George Washington was the first nuclear-powered aircraft carrier sent to Japan as part of the FDNF. Maintaining a FDNF capability supports the United States’ commitment to the defense of Japan and the

A 2011 Amityville Memorial High School graduate and Amityville, New York, native is serving on one of the world’s largest warships, the U.S. Navy aircraft carrier USS Ronald Reagan. Petty Officer 3rd Class Tashera Jones is a logistics specialist aboard the San Diegobased ship, a Nimitz-class nuclear-powered aircraft carrier and one of only ten operational aircraft carriers in the Navy today. “I am responsible for ordering and delivering parts for the aircraft on

time so the squadron remains on schedule,” said Jones Named in honor of former President Ronald Reagan, the carrier is longer than 3 football fields, at nearly 1,100 feet long. The ship is 252 feet wide and weighs more than 100,000 tons. Two nuclear reactors can push the ship through the water at nearly 35 mph. As a sailor with numerous responsibilities, Jones said she is proud to serve her country aboard an aircraft carrier. “I enjoy the diversity on an aircraft carrier. It is such a large ship you are meeting new people all the time,” said Jones. Jones also said she is very proud of the work she is doing as part of USS Ronald Reagan’s nearly 3,000-member crew, helping protect America on the world’s oceans.
