Quite the undertaking, and perhaps only for my own self-satisfaction, but a worthy effort nonetheless. events (I got to interview Don Mattingly??) and… well, a host of columns that can only be categorized as “other,” those musings that delve into the philosophical, my own analysis of life as we know it. A bit uneven? Surely. Representative of my frame of mind at any given moment during the course of the last 10-going-on-11 years? Absolutely. And isn’t that what it’s all about? The opportunity to capture a moment in time, by any means, and transmit it to the public, through any medium, is a priceless one. How lucky I am to have had the chance to do so. 555 times. I thought I was just going to clean the closet. I had put off doing it because I knew it would be hard. The rest of the work of boxing up the “stuff” was finished. Only her closet remained. It was filled with her clothes, shoes, hats, purses…the things that defined my mother to the world. Everything was hung neatly, categorized by seasons, some placed together into “outfits”, everything neat and pressed and ready to wear. Everything smelled like her, looked like her…this was her personal space. It had been several months since her death and I thought I was doing pretty well. And I was, until I opened that closet. I wasn’t ready for the pain. Grief swept over me like a tidal wave and knocked me to my knees. My mother was gone. She was really dead.

Last Hope Animal Rescue. “This was the beginning of our commitment to take several Daviess dogs a month. By 2014, we were working with three Kentucky and one Virginia shelter on a regular basis. In 2014, and again in 2015, we placed over one hundred dogs from these shelters. Our Petco Foundation grant will enable Last Hope to rescue more Southern dogs, and also restore their health before finding them loving homes. Some are special needs dogs like Daisy a Black and Tan Coonhound who needed an eye removed due to glaucoma, and Henry a Redbone Coonhound

abandoned, starved or even shot when not deemed worthwhile hunting dogs. With the help of shelters like Last Hope on Long Island, partner shelters like Daviess County in Kentucky have dramatically been able to improve adoptions and lower the number of animals put to sleep. In 2008, 90 percent of the dogs and cats at Daviess were euthanized. Now the dog figure is much lower, less than 10 percent. “In 2009, Daviess County approached us about saving a hound named Valentine they had nursed back to health,” said Linda Stuurman, president of

partnership with several shelters and transport networks in Kentucky and Virginia, where Last Hope renews hope for discarded dogs that otherwise do not stand a chance. Since 1981, Last Hope has been striving to improve the quality of life for homeless pets, and to provide community outreach services and spay/ neuter initiatives for feral cats. Last Hope placed 260 dogs and 575 cats in loving, responsible homes in 2015. This generous Petco Foundation grant will help Last Hope with transport and veterinary costs of adoptable Southern dogs. In rural states, Beagles and other hounds are routinely

As a culmination to their writing unit, students in Dana Herz’s secondgrade class at Northwest School in the Amityville Union Free School District hosted a publishing party on March 11th. To begin the unit, each student was tasked with selecting a topic for

his or her story. With their own interests in mind, the young authors chose to write about themes including blocks, snowflakes, the Apple Company and the United States presidents. During the writing process, students learned to revise and edit their work.

Additionally, the secondgraders printed pictures to illustrate information they wrote on each page. Following two months of hard work, students had the opportunity to share their stories with family members, faculty, staff and administrators during the publishing party event.
