explore their specific visual interests. “The students have a real interest in these classes,” Mr. Carbo said. “There are crucial skills they’re learning by using technology creatively. It’s not even the future anymore, it’s the present. This is where the jobs are.” He described himself as a “facilitator” who believes students learn best when they can work hands-on with technology. Mr. Carbo explained that in addition to learning practical skills, his courses allow students to develop their problemsolving and critical thinking abilities. “There is no greater moment for me as a teacher then when I see a student excel beyond expectations,” he added. Through his hobbies as a filmmaker and musician, Mr. Carbo keeps abreast of the latest trends and most

current technology. He also attends conferences and trade shows, and this year Amityville was the only school to have students attend the ASSET Conference, which featured the latest in educational software and hardware. In addition to his classes, he is the stage crew adviser and audio visual coordinator. Mr. Carbo was nominated for the award by Carole Polney, Amityville’s assistant superintendent for technology and administrative services, and the president of ASSET. She noted his dedication to students inside the classroom and after-school hours, and said his school counts on him as the “goto-guy” for technology needs. “Mr. Carbo is a team player and visionary teacher,” Ms. Polney said. “He not only keeps up his professional growth

regarding technology, but he’s also sure to expose Amityville students to some of the newest technologies.

From Amity to Albany Continued From 9 were then chosen to join a delegation of 40 students to represent Long Island in Albany from March 25th-27th. The delegation heard from representatives from New York State Education Department, as well as keynote speaker Edgardo Miranda-Rodriguez, the creator of a female Puerto Rican superhero cartoon character. The students also broke out into groups about using the arts to express their views on political and social issues. Emily and Sandra worked on mural and songwriting projects. There was a mock assembly at the Capitol building. Students researched four bills that were particularly relevant to the Latino community and debated them on the assembly floor. Emily and Sandra,

Less than one week into the new season, and I came down with a cold. Not just any cold, mind you – the epitome of chest colds, complete with congestion, sinus pressure and one of those irritating, incessant sort of tickles in the back of the throat that seem to kick into high gear right around bedtime. All winter, and not a sniffle. That, I believe, is what they call irony. So, too, is the fact that those who have been looking forward to spring with such anticipation are already bemoaning the pouring rain we’ve been experiencing over the last week or so. April showers

bring May flowers, do they not? At least that’s how the old saying goes. Of course, some flowers have already blossomed thanks to the unseasonably warm temperatures scattered throughout March and, as such, have gone back to hibernating for the duration. More irony, indeed. No worries, there are certainly plenty of flowers to be had over the next several months, along with green grass and flourishing trees and… pollen and sap and weeds and mold spores… There’s nothing like the great outdoors. Just be sure to stock up on tissues and allergy pills before you venture out. And maybe an umbrella,

for good measure. Spring is a perfect representation of life as a whole. It’s filled with much anticipation of better days, often precluded by clouds and unseasonable changes in temperature, or moods, if you will. And still, there are those who would just as soon skip right over it into summer, assuming that sunshine and surf and sand equal happiness; when really, the unknown is never guaranteed to be better than the present. And that, dear readers, is the essence of it all. Appreciate today and all the sniffles and sunbursts it may bring; stop and pick a flower, splash in a puddle, enjoy the moment. It’s the only one you’ve got.

Exemplary Pair Amityville Memorial High School has announced the valedictorian and salutatorian of the Class of 2017. Esteban Idrovo Ponce has achieved the top ranking with a weighted grade point average of 112.13, and Lawrence Haave earned the second spot in the class with a GPA of 106.45. Esteban, who plans to major in physics in college, is parliamentarian of the National Honor Society, vice president of the National World Language Honor Society, president of the Key Club and treasurer of the Drama Club. He has also been an active member of student government, the Debate Club, the Puerto Rican Hispanic Youth

Leadership Institute, Mathletes and the track and field team while serving as a tutor and a volunteer with the Amityville Fire Department. (the mesh) that is placed under the urethra to support it like a hammock. The purpose is to prevent the urethra from excess descent with the increased abdominal pressure. Mesh has been used successfully for a number of years internationally with approximately 80-90% satisfaction rates. Potential complications of mesh are well known. It needs to be thoroughly under the vaginal tissues so it does not erode into the vagina. Erosions have occurred even years after the placement of the sling. These problems are treatable. Women who suffer from embarrassing leakage need not suffer in silence. Great success and thousands of satisfied women have had their lives improved after surgical repair. The urge type incontinence refers to the inability to get to the toilet on time when the urge to void begins. There are many causes for this type of incontinence. It may vary from one incontinent episode a day to multiple accidents, daytime and nighttime frequency. The leakage tends to be of larger amounts as the bladder starts to empty despite trying to stop it. This type of leakage is not not treatable with surgery like the stress type. Decreasing the amount of coffee, tea, colas, alcohol and spicy food may help to some degree. Voiding more frequently, prior to the urge may prevent the accident. Medications are often used. The purpose of

There are a number of reasons why women may have problems with their bladder control but the two most prevalent types are stress incontinence and urge incontinence. Stress incontinence is when some loss of urine takes place at the same moment as the cough, laugh or exercise. It is common in women in the years after childbirth but may also be a problem for cigarette smokers, people with asthma and chronic constipation. It may also be hereditary. The repeated straining movement of the cough or pushing to have a bowel movement weakens the connective tissues. Treatment options include pelvic floor exercises to try and strengthen the muscles of the pelvic floor, biofeedback and surgery. When the leakage is substantial surgery is usually the best course of action. Surgery for stress incontinence has been greatly improved in the last few years with the development of slings. In the past, the surgery required abdominal incisions with a hospital stay and prolonged recovery. Today the procedures have become ambulatory with quick recovery and very good success rates. The sling refers to a piece of material
