TRYING TO TRAP A LEPRECHAUN - Members of the student council at Susan E. Wiley Elementary School in the Copiague School District showed off their ingenuity and creativity as they designed leprechaun traps right in time for St. Patrick’s Day. Twelve unique traps in an array of different materials – designed to attract the leprechauns – were created by the student council members. On March 17, the council met to show off all of their traps and explain how they work. The students then voted on their favorite trap to catch the leprechaun. RIVERA NAMED AWARD WINNER - Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School junior Joanna Rivera has been chosen for the New York State Retired School Administrators and Supervisors Award. She was nominated by school counselor Colleen Darge. The opioid epidemic has highlighted that all ages, socio-economic backgrounds, and all communities can be profoundly vulnerable to addiction. YES Community Counseling Center has been providing both addiction treatment and prevention services for the past three decades with the understanding that the needs of each individual is uniquely different and therefore, treatment must also be individualized and utilize a variety of approaches.

YES Community Counseling Center’s addiction treatment services are comprehensive and approaches are based upon the developmental stage and readiness of each individual. Under the supervision of the agency’s Medical Director, specializes in evidence based services which are available for adolescents, young adults, adults and family members, including: •Adolescent Family Program (AFP) •Young Adult groups •Impaired driver evaluations and treatment •Moral Reconation Therapy for those who are legally involved (MRT) •Recovery groups •Trauma focused therapies •Parent and signiﬁcant other support groups •Educational groups

It is also understood that most often, family members are deeply affected by addiction and require support and well as an understanding the complexities of the disease and how to support a loved one through their recovery. Early education about addiction is critical along with early interventions that build individual, family and community protective factors to reduce the likelihood of young people resorting to substances to cope with life’s challenges. In light of marijuana legalization, it is so important that parents learn the detrimental effects of all substances on the developing brain. In addition to prevention services within the local schools and community, YES CCC offers early intervention

Copiague School District Honors Winter Student-Athletes Honoring the hard work of its student-athletes both on and off the field, athletes at Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School on March 8. Sponsored Copiague School District held its annual winter sports awards for its varsity by the Copiague Booster Club, the awards recognize their athletic and academic accomplishments. Coaches, central office administrators and Copiague School District’s Board of Education members congratulated athletes from girls bowling, boys bowling, girls basketball, girls winter track, boys basketball, boys winter track and wrestling teams. Coaches called athletes up front to be recognized and celebrated both their individual and team achievements during the season. They also distributed individual awards, including the Coaches’ Award, Most Improved and the MVP award, to worthy receipients. Seven Golden Eagle awards were presented to students from each team with the highest cumulative grade point average. The Long Island Chapter of Trout Unlimited will be conducting two clinics on “Basic Fly Casting”, one on Saturday, April 2nd at Connetquot River State Park Preserve in Oakdale and one on Saturday, April 9th at Caleb Smith State Park Preserve in Smithtown. The clinics will be held rain or shine, from 10:00AM – 1:00PM, and are open to everyone 16 years and older. If you own fly fishing equipment, bring it with you, but it is not required to attend. Clinic topics will include basic casting instructions, equipment needs and selection, conservation, and safety techniques. Reservations are required and accepted beginning two

weeks prior to each clinic. There is no registration fee, however, there will be an $8.00 vehicle use fee in effect. The Long Island State Park Region also operates Nissequogue River Fly Fishing School at Caleb Smith State Park Preserve. Past winners of the scholarships have enhanced their teaching by sampling the resources available to Harvard students: meeting with faculty; visiting research laboratories, rare book archives, and specialty museums; and enjoying visual and performance art. The scholarships are funded by contributions from Harvard alumni living on Long Island. This year’s Distinguished Teacher Award winners were nominated by current Harvard undergraduates and then selected by Harvard Club of Long Island board members. They teach algebra, biology, chemistry, English, history, language arts, and psychology. The winners teach in Copiague, Freeport, Lawrence, Port Jefferson, Syosset, and Three Villages public school districts and St. Mary’s Elementary School in Manhasset. Past recipients from the Copiague School District of the Harvard Club of Long Island’s Distinguished Teacher Awards include Renée Locker (2020) and John Young (2010).

Matthew Miles of Copiague High School has been named a “Distinguished Teacher of 2022” by the Harvard Club of Long Island. “This award honors middle and high school teachers who have profoundly influenced their students’ lives,” explained Dr. Judith Esterquest, Chair of the Distinguished Teacher Selection Committee. “Dedicated teachers like Mr. Miles inspire Long Island students to excel, to become passionate about learning, and to recognize the value of hard work. These teachers devote countless hours to creating better futures for our children.” Mr. Miles will be honored at a virtual awards ceremony on April 2, along with seven other teachers from across Long Island. Delivering the keynote will be Harvard Professor of Psychology Fiery Cushman, who studies how people make moral decisions. Mr. Miles, an English teacher at Copiague High School, has been teaching in NY for 32 years, 28 of which have been in the Copiague School District. He currently teaches AP Language and Composition, College Prep, and English 2. He also coaches JV Field Hockey and is the Assistant Varsity Lacrosse coach. Mr. Miles graduated from Stony Brook University with a degree in Secondary English Education and received a master’s degree in Liberal Studies from Stony Brook University. Education is his family’s profession. (NAPSI)-A recent online survey by Toluna/ Greenfield Online, Inc. found that while most consumers try to protect their identity, many admitted to risky behavior that could put them at risk for ID theft. To help educate and protect consumers, world-renowned fraud prevention expert Frank Abagnale offers these tips: • Shop smart: Limit the credit cards you carry. •Keep receipts and check your statements: Examine every charge on your statement before paying. Your receipts provide a great crossreference check and guard against suspicious activity. You have 30 days from the date of your statement to notify your financial institution of any discrepancies; otherwise, you can be liable for any purchases. • Protect your computer when online shopping:

Make sure your security patch and anti-virus software are updated regularly. Consider technology to protect against potential viruses. • Watch where you shop online: Look for the lock icon on the site’s browser status bar, a sign that that site is safe. If you have never heard of a website before, see if it has security precautions in place and isn’t a fake site set up by identity thieves. •Don’t write checks: Give cash or gift cards. The information on a check—name, signature, address—can be used to steal identity. •Strengthen passwords: Use passwords with at least eight characters, including a combination of letters, numbers and symbols that are easy for you to remember but difficult for predators to guess. • Watch your wallet: Be careful at parties,

restaurants, fitness clubs, shopping carts and your car. • Don’t take the bait on phishing scams: Also, beware of shoulder surfing (when a thief looks over your shoulder while you’re at an ATM, either directly or via a camera). • Stop mail and newspaper delivery when you’ll be away from home. • Consider an identity theft protection service: One low-cost solution monitors the online criminal underground where identities are bought and sold and instantly alerts you if your Social Security number or up to 10 credit card or debit card numbers are posted by thieves. The service also scans online directories and search engines, prime sources for spammers and thieves, letting you know where your information is available, and provides advice on how to remove it.
