To celebrate the athletic accomplishments of its students, Copiague School District held its Winter Sports Awards Dinner on March 7th at Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School. Sponsored by the Booster Club, student-athletes in boys bowling, girls bowling, girls basketball, boys basketball, step team, wrestling, boys track, girls track and cheerleading, were recognized for their dedication to their sports by coaches, Copiague School District administrators and members of the Board of Education. Throughout the night, coaches praised the student-athletes for their success and distributed individual awards, including the Coaches’ Award, Most Improved and the MVP award, to worthy receipients. Nine Golden Eagle awards were presented to students from each team with the highest cumulative grade point average. This year, Melanie Garcia (girls bowling), Amorelle Penick (step team), Jonathan Gudel (boys bowling), Marvin Pineda Lobo (wrestling), Ashley Hudson (girls basketball), Jenna Langan (cheerleading), Jackson Bright (boys basketball), Mikayla Angel (girls track) and Peter Milillo (boys track) were recipients of the Golden Eagle awards.

Mystery Mondays featured schoolwide announcements in which students had to guess either a mystery reader or the message of a mystery poem. Parents and their children came together on PARP Reading Night for various literacy activities, such as writing the ending to a story and drawing pictures based on their favorite books. Students throughout the school are keeping track of their independent reading time at home. Each week, the children with the most minutes receive prizes such as books, bookmarks and pencils. Principal Robyn Santiago said that the books being given away were based on student input so they would receive titles that

The American Heart Association will kick off the month-long campaign on National Walking Day, April 5th, to encourage people to move more by increasing their physical activity. The campaign is broken down into weekly themes. Week one focuses on walking and the basic tools you need to get started. Life, as we know it, doesn’t always go according to plan. Sometimes, the most carefully orchestrated days can go awry in the blink of an eye, through no fault of our own. How we react, and recover – or don’t, as the case may be – says a lot about our character, or lack thereof. The fact is, more days than not will fall into this category. Seldom do schedules run like clockwork; rare are there uninterrupted intervals of peace and tranquility. Life doesn’t stop for anyone, and you had best hang on for the ride. Speaking of rides, and unexpected detours if you will, I recently took my car – my six-year old “Celeste” – for her annual checkup at the dealership. Over three hours, and nearly $500, later, I left with new rear brakes, an oil change, assorted minor

maintenance and a clean bill of health – for now. One day later, a co-worker said, “Didn’t you just get your car serviced?” Um…yeah? “Brake light is out.” And here I was so excited to no longer have a monthly car payment to contend with. Sigh. Take a deep breath; it calms the mind… so they say. On that note, I am happy to report to many inquiring readers that I have found a new yoga studio at which to continue my practice; new locale, anyway – same teacher, same familiar faces, same positive vibes. It’s amazing what those 75 minutes can do for the soul, even after the most pressing of days. There is something truly healing about those inhales and exhales, even while the mind races through its endless loop of thoughts. We could all benefit from

slowing down the pace a bit, mentally and physically. What has rushing ever accomplished that more careful consideration and contemplation couldn’t have improved upon? Even my baby betta, Spud, seems to have realized this, as he purposefully swims to and fro in his tiny bowl, stopping every so often – about once every five minutes, on average – to carefully inspect the thermometer I recently installed. Maybe he can read? Even his eating habits are methodical, as he carefully chooses each crumb, gobbling them up in – I kid you not – size order. And here I thought I was a bit OCD. Like human, like pet. And with that, the clock has tolled on deadline. And so, In Step readers, I bid you a fond adieu. ‘Til next week. Make it a good one.

Celebrating Community On March 18th, the Copiague School District hosted its annual Community Summit. The goal of the summit is to provide members of the community and elected officials an inside look into what is occurring within the district. This year’s theme, STEM In Our Schools, focused on the areas of science, technology, engineering and math. “The summit gives us an opportunity to share some of the things the board has been doing, discuss some of the issues we face in the

upcoming budget and to celebrate the success that we have had,” said Board of Education President Brian J. Sales. During her State of the District, Superintendent of Schools Dr. Kathleen Bannon highlighted the many accomplishments of the students and staff, provided an update on the district’s capital projects and discussed the district’s finances. “Over the last several years, we have stayed under the New York State tax cap and our tax increases have averaged less than 2.4 percent

per year. We continue to contain our costs and we have been conservatively budgeting so that we can maintain the programs and services we currently have. If we were to receive an increase in state aid, we would add to and expand our offerings, which would positively benefit our students,” said noted. Jennifer Kohn, of Huntington Station in Suffolk’s 18th District, was nominated by County Attorney Dennis Brown. Now a senior assistant county attorney, she has been working in the county for nearly 30 years. The Northeastern Law School graduate is the only current employee to hold a master’s degree in environmental law. Their classroom is filled with hundreds of books in the new leveled library, which are used

for both book clubs and independent reading. Students can find literature at their level. A core mission of the Columbia Teachers College program is to create communities of readers and writers. Katie Rosario, an eighth-grade teacher, said she now does more small-group instruction to support students based on their individual needs. The trapezoid desks can be formed into shapes to support these small groups, or arranged in a large circle for a full class discussion. “My classroom also has comfortable beanbags and other seating options, along with lamps to give kids that living room feel,” she said “I love reading in my cozy spot, so why not try and create that for our students? Both the new desks and the new program has increased student engagement and motivation to learn.”

Leakage of urine is not normal but is very common in women. In most cases the problem can be improved. There are a number of reasons why women may have problems with their bladder control but the two most prevalent types are stress incontinence and urge incontinence. Stress incontinence is when some loss of urine takes place at the same moment as the cough, laugh or exercise. It is related to the increased abdominal pressure which puts excess pressure on the bladder. It is common in women in the years after childbirth but may also be a problem for cigarette smokers, people with asthma and chronic constipation. It may also be hereditary. The repeated straining movement of the cough or pushing to have a bowel movement weakens the connective tissues. Treatment options include pelvic floor exercises to try and strengthen the muscles of the pelvic floor, biofeedback and surgery. When the leakage is substantial surgery is usually the best course of action. Surgery for stress incontinence has been greatly improved in the last few years with the development of slings. In the past, the surgery required abdominal incisions with a hospital stay and prolonged recovery. Today the procedures have become ambulatory with quick recovery and very good success rates. The sling refers to a piece of material

(the mesh) that is placed under the urethra to support it like a hammock. The purpose is to prevent the urethra from excess descent with the increased abdominal pressure. Mesh has been used successfully for a number of years internationally with approximately 80-90% satisfaction rates. Potential complications of mesh are well known. It needs to be thoroughly under the vaginal tissues so it does not erode into the vagina. Erosions have occurred even years after the placement of the sling. These problems are treatable. Women who suffer from embarrassing leakage need not suffer in silence. Great success and thousands of satisfied women have had their lives improved after surgical repair. The urge type incontinence refers to the inability to get to the toilet on time when the urge to void begins. There are many causes for this type of incontinence. It may vary from one incontinent episode a day to multiple accidents, daytime and nighttime frequency. The leakage tends to be of larger amounts as the bladder starts to empty despite trying to stop it. This type of leakage is not not treatable with surgery like the stress type. Decreasing the amount of coffee, tea, colas, alcohol and spicy food may help to some degree. Voiding more frequently, prior to the urge may prevent the accident. Medications are often used. The purpose of

the medication is to prevent the bladder from contracting too quickly to allow more time to get to the toilet. It may also decrease the frequency. Medications are not always helpful, and in many cases, the side effects may be troubling. When medications are not helpful or cannot be

tolerated, other options include Botox injections in the bladder and neuromodulation. It is important to know that the majority of women with urinary leakage problems may be helped if not cured. There is no reason to suffer in silence. Pharmacies have entire incontinence
