We are fortunate that we have been able to budget properly over the last few years and our programs are still intact.” Gavey continued her speech to discuss the need for increased state and federal funding in order to maintain its educational programs. During her “State of the District” address, Dr. Bannon focused on the district’s multitude of positive accomplishments and provided an update on the district’s ongoing capital project. She also

mentioned the district’s 2018-2019 budget process and the need for increased state funding. “In a perfect world, there would be adequate and equitable funding for public education,” she said. “Funding that is predictable, transparent and sustainable. So that we can plan for the long term, rather than year to year.” The summit also featured student musical performances, spotlights on various creative student programs and projects and an introduction of the Class of 2018 top 10 students. Additionally, New York State Sen. John Brooks, Brendan Cunningham, Chief of Staff for New York State Assemblywoman Kimberly Jean-Pierre, and Town of Babylon Supervisor Richard Schaffer were in attendance.

Anniversary in the Works Supervisor Rich Schaffer along with Babylon Town Board, various town commissioners and the mayors of Amityville, Babylon and Lindenhurst Villages came together on the steps of Babylon Town Hall on March 14th to announce the formation of a committee to plan the celebration of the town’s milestone 150th anniversary approaching in March of 2022. The group

then stood on the steps of Town Hall to recreate a photo taken exactly one hundred years ago by Babylon leaders in 1918. “Honoring the past and helping our residents understand the story of our town are important responsibilities for the government,” said Supervisor Schaffer. “Whether it be on the national, state or local level, the composition

of the government is reﬂective of its citizens. I hope that our residents enjoy what we have in store for this anniversary as much as the people in this photo will,” he added. Supervisor Schaffer says the committee will be led by a combination of volunteers from the community and Town of Babylon staff, especially Town Historian Mary Cascone and

My Spring Awakening I have never seen the play which bears my title, nor am I especially familiar with its subject matter; however, I feel it an appropriate moniker on this, March 21st, as I begin to put my thoughts together for the column you are reading. To start, I have been curious for some time as to why the dates for the first “official” days of each of our four seasons seem to ﬂuctuate year to year when, back in school, the calendar remained fairly standard. The Summer and Winter Solstices fell on June 21st and December 21st, respectively; and the Vernal and Autumnal Equinoxes occurred on March 21st and September 23rd, without fail. Now, it seems most have been pushed up by an entire day, throwing my entire elementary school curriculum into question.

Upon doing a bit of research, it seems this variance is due to a combination of factors; namely, that the earth’s elliptical orbit is gradually changing year after year, causing a slight difference in when the planet reaches its 90-degree intervals around the sun, signaling the change of season. Additionally, the concept that days of Equinox result in the precisely equal separation of day and night is also not quite accurate. This, apparently, is due to atmospheric conditions which lead to “refraction,” leading us to believe we are seeing the sun slightly prior to its rise and a bit past its set.

Laundry room renovation ideas T o former apartment dwellers or those who have never enjoyed the benefit of a dedicated laundry area, even the smallest washer and dryer space can seem like a luxury. The benefits of dedicated laundry rooms abound. However, disorganized laundry rooms can nullify such benefits. Depending on the needs and preferences of each homeowner, laundry room designs can be customized for convenience.

Employ vertical space

Floor space may be at a premium in a laundry room, especially for those who want to devote as much space as possible to bulk-size washer and dryer units. Therefore, utilizing wall space is key. Preparing garden beds for spring and beyond

ardening enthusiasts may have been thinking about their landscape plans throughout the winter, eager to once again get their hands dirty with soil. Whether a home gardener is making preparations for edible crops or beautiful ﬂowers, he or she must take time to make the soil amenable to planting. To establish hearty, durable plants, gardeners can focus on three main areas: addressing soil composition, cultivating and adding nutrients.

the soil. Mother Earth News suggests working on garden soil when the soil is damp but never wet; otherwise, garden soil can become messy and clumpy. Use a digging fork or shovel to lightly turn the soil when it’s mostly dry. Gentle tillings also can open up the soil to incorporate the nutritional amendments and relieve compaction that likely occurred from freezing temps and snow pressure. Tilling also helps with drainage and oxygen delivery to roots. The DIY Network suggests turning over soil at a depth of 12 inches to work the soil — about the length of a shovel spade. However, the resource Earth Easy says that existing garden beds have a complex soil ecosystem and simply top-dressing with compost or manure can be enough preparation for planting. Gardeners can experiment with the methods that work best for their gardens.

Soil Composition

Many gardeners prefer growing a variety of plants in their gardens. Such an approach requires taking inventory of the type of soil in one’s garden and making the necessary modiﬁcations so that the types of vegetables, herbs, shrubs or ﬂowers that will be planted can grow in strongly. In fact, the most important step to developing good roots is preparing the soil. Take a sample of the soil and examine it to see what is present. If the soil is too full of clay, too sandy, too dense or too loose, that can lead to problems where plants cannot grow in strong. Work with a garden center to add the right soil amendments to make a rich soil. This may include organic compost or manure, which will also add nutrients to the soil.

Cultivating the soil can involve different steps. Removal of weeds, errant rocks, roots and other items will help prepare

Nutrition

Testing the pH and the levels of certain nutrients in the soil, namely nitrogen, phosphorous and potassium, will give gardeners an idea of other soil additions that may be needed. Soils with a pH below 6.2 often can beneﬁt from the addition of lime several weeks before planting. Soil tests will determine just how much fertilizer to add to the soil. Complete fertilizers will have equal amounts of nitrogen, phosphorous and potassium. Individual fertilizers can amend the soil with only these nutritional elements that are needed. Top-dressing empty beds with a layer of mulch or compost can prevent weed growth and preserve moisture until it is time to plant. If existing shrubs or plants are in garden beds, use more care so as not to disturb roots or dig too deeply. Preparing garden beds takes some effort initially, but can be well worth the work when plants ﬂourish throughout the growing season.

A proactive approach that prevents weed growth is easier and less frustrating than dealing with weeds after they have sprouted. That means addressing weeds before they release seeds, and not waiting so long that the damage is already done. According to the home and landscape experts with This Old House, spraying herbicide for weeds in June and July can address weeds before seeds are set. Tilling and installing a new lawn in late August or the beginning of September can help the lawn establish itself before the ﬁrst frosts arrive, all the while avoiding weed growth. The weed control experts at Roundup also suggest a springtime application of weed killer if this is the desired route. Early treatment can prevent weed roots from spreading too far in the soil, which can reduce the chances that weed remnants will be left behind to grow at a later time. Pouring boiling water on weeds or pulling them by hand is more effective when roots are young and have not yet spread. The UK-based company Lawnsmith also suggests a mid-spring weed killer application. This ensures that all weeds that have surfaced are addressed and that none are missed by weeding too early. The Idaho-based Town & Country Gardens suggests lawn and garden enthusiasts wait to tackle weeds. By waiting and applying weed treatments in the fall, when dandelions and other weeds are absorbing food and nutrients in larger quantities to survive winter, homeowners can rid their lawns and gardens of weeds efﬁciently. Weeds are a nuisance and an eyesore in lawns and gardens. Choosing the right time to treat them can ensure they don’t adversely affect lush landscapes and thriving gardens.

Poets’ Corner

Rafael Castro, a resident of Copiague, died March 12th, 2018 at Good Samaritan Hospital, West Islip. He was 91 years old. He was born on September 23rd, 1926 to Rafael and Clara (Schneider) Castro. Mr. Castro served his country with distinction during World War II from 1945 to 1946. He later worked for Grumman Aerospace as a Proto Mechanic. Rafael was a longtime active member of the Odd Fellows and the Amityville Masonic Lodge. A funeral service was conducted at the funeral home after services by the Oddfellows and the Masons. Interment was in LI National Cemetery with Military Honors. Survivors include his wife, Gloria, his son Robert (Debra), his grandchildren Peter Castro and Jacqueline Soraire (Herman), his sisters Nilda Castro, Louisa Castro and Luvy Castro, his brothers Alex, Frank and Elpidio. He was predeceased by his brother George Bayer. Arrangements were under the direction of Powell Funeral Home, Inc., Amityville.

SCOPE Honorees Five members of the Amityville Union Free School District community were honored at the SCOPE Education Services 17th annual School District Awards Dinner on March 19th. Board of Education Vice President Laura McVeety Pawlewicz received the School Board Service award. She is a graduate of Amityville Memorial High School and the mother of two boys who presently attend Amityville schools. Ms. Pawlewicz was recognized because of her commitment to providing for the academic, social and emotional needs of every student in the district. Assistant Administrator for Pupil Personnel Services Sandra Parmentier was presented with the Administrator Service Award. She worked in the district for 20 years, beginning as special education teacher. In her

role as an administrator, Ms. Parmentier has been instrumental in spearheading many district special education initiatives including the district’s TEACCH program for students with autism. JoAnne Rubin, a special education teacher at Northeast Elementary School, received the Teacher Service award. In her 30 years in Amityville, she has become known as a master teacher who skillfully harnesses best practices in pedagogy and behavior management to help her students reach their academic and social goals. She takes personal ownership for every child’s learning, a task that goes well beyond the workday. Fran Gastman, confidential secretary to the assistant superintendent for curriculum and instruction, was presented with the Support Staff Service award. She began

her career in Amityville 14 years ago at the high school before moving to the central administration office in 2017. Ms. Gastman organizes and supports multiple projects relating to personnel, the curriculum office and state requirements. Dina Shingleton Rosenberg, who has a daughter in sixth grade and a son in first grade, received the Community Service Award. She has been an active member of the Amityville Parent Teacher Council holding leadership titles of building representative, secretary and vice president, and is currently the treasurer. Mrs. Shingleton Rosenberg has led fundraising efforts for educational opportunities such as author visits, parent resource fairs and family fun nights.

Finally, the onsite classroom will used for partnerships with local school districts and community groups to foster a love and understanding of responsible pet ownership among the community’s young people.
