When It Can Be Smart To Hire A Painting Pro Few things can revitalize a home more readily than a fresh coat of paint. Thanks in part to the affordability of paint and its ease of application, painting is something that even novice DIYers can typically handle. According to the marketing advice guru Brandon Gaille, it is estimated that residential interior paint only lasts around three years before it needs to be updated. Exterior paint can fade, chip and peel due to various environmental factors. As a result, many homes can likely use a fresh coat of paint in at least one room. As DIY-friendly as painting can be, when attempting to paint the interior or exterior of their homes, homeowners may learn that some painting projects are best left to the professionals. Painting requires skill, patience and a knowledge of how various

paints — including finishes for particular applications — will hold up. Novice painters may do more harm than good by dripping paint on expensive carpeting or floors or fail to recognize the nuances that indicate a spoton painting job. Professional painters have spent hours upon hours learning the ropes of what works — and what does not. Painters often understand that painstaking preparatory work is crucial to getting pristine finished results. Walls and ceilings must be properly repaired and prepared even before a base coat is applied. Professional painters also have an eye for details. And because professional painters make a business out of doing interior and exterior surfaces, they understand which techniques can improve efficiency. That means a professional job can

typically be completed much more quickly than a DIY project. Even though some people think they’ll save money by painting their own homes, that’s not necessarily true. Professionals already have all the equipment necessary, unlike novices who may need to make repeated and potentially costly trips to the hardware store for supplies. Safety can be a large motivator for turning painting over to a pro. Navigating exterior areas or tall interior ceilings can be challenging and may require scaffolding or tall ladders DIYers do not have. Risk of falls or other injuries increase with lack of experience. Painting can give a home a facelift, and oftentimes it is smart to turn the work over to professionals to ensure the job is done just right.

Catholic Health Services Offers Tips to Reduce COVID-19 Anxiety As coronavirus continues to impact Long Islanders, growing health concerns along with the constant barrage of news is raising people’s anxiety. Catholic Health Services’s (CHS) mental health professionals offer ways we can reduce our stress during this time of uncertainty. This includes eating healthy, exercise, adequate sleep, virtually connecting with friends and family and reducing exposure to news and social media. “The constant flow of information related to coronavirus can become overwhelming,” said Catholic Health Services Chairman of Behavioral Health Ronald Brenner, MD. “It’s important to take a break and step away from media reports and the constant scrolling through social channels.” Anxiety is a normal response to a stressful situation and can inspire adaptive behavior in many situations. However, when facing mounting uncertainty, the brain can go into an anxiety spiral and cause atypical reactions. Knowing the body’s physical reactions to the different types of anxiety is important. Typical stress reactions

can include temporary difficulty concentrating, irritability, fatigue, stomachache and difficulty sleeping. Atypical reactions can manifest in persistent and/or excessive worry that prevents you from completing daily tasks, changes to energy levels, eating patterns and/or prolonged and overwhelming worry. Dr. Brenner strongly suggests that anyone experiencing unusual or atypical reactions that won’t subside in a short period of time seek professional mental health assistance. To reduce coronavirusrelated anxiety, there are several steps individuals can take. These include: • Find meaningful tasks and roles within your support network to channel your anxiety • Create spaces that are not focused on coronavirus. This could include a social media thread on other topics, or watching movies • Savor small positive moments, amplify positive stories and stay optimistic • Practice mindfulness when managing anxiety such as performing exercises and deep breathing. to speak to a mental health professional, CHS offers a host of services including Telepsychiatry, which improves access to psychiatric services for emergency department (ED) patients, particularly after normal office hours. They have actively been serving those in need on Long Island for over 70 years!

Fundraising is also a very significant part of UCP, as it is with just about any other nonprofit organization. However, United Cerebral Palsy of Long Island is one of the most fiscally responsible agencies on our island because 92 cents of every dollar they receive goes back into their programs and services.

This organization, despite their name, helps individuals with a wide range of disabilities. In fact, over 65 percent of those they serve today do not have cerebral palsy. In addition to helping those with cerebral plasy, they currently are serving those with:

Law On Who Controls Your Funeral

When we lived in much simpler times, the immediate family decided who controlled the funeral service. The order of who controlled the funeral was the following: First and foremost it was the spouse who decided on the method of final disposition, cremation, burial, church service, etc. If there was no spouse, it was the children over 18 of the deceased who decided and usually they agreed with each other, if the individual was not married the parents made the decisions, if no parents the brothers and sisters and last on the list were aunts, uncles or cousins. If there weren’t any living relatives or executors of the will, the Public Administrator made the decision. The Law has changed, NYS Public Health Law 4201(2) provides for the designation in a written instrument of a person who shall control the disposition of the remains of a deceased person. Under Public Health Law 4201(3) the written instrument must be signed and dated by the decedent and the agent and properly witnessed. Now, understand I am not a lawyer, but my understanding of this law is that with the proper form, an individual can appoint someone other than his or her spouse to have control over their final disposition. For instance, a person who never divorced can appoint a significant other to control their final disposition. A person who lives with a domestic partner can appoint that person rather than his or her family to have control of the final disposition. A person who has married for a second time can appoint his or her children as agents for their funeral. If it is your intent to have someone other than your immediate next of kin to have control of your final disposition or if you want a specific child, parent or sibling to be in absolute control of your funeral, speak to an attorney and fill out the necessary paperwork. Then I would suggest taking it to an attorney for review. Keep in mind that giving someone control of your final disposition may very well include giving them financial obligation of paying for the funeral expenses.
