I suppose it’s fitting that Long Island should be blanketed by white once more before finally (hopefully) giving way to the first blossoms. It’s funny, no matter how many seasons we are fortunate to enjoy here in the northeast, there are always those detractors who seem dissatisfied with the variety of weather. The seasons are too long, too hot, too cold, whatever. Imagine if we all lived in an area of extreme

fluctuations, from 100º days to 8 feet of snow at a clip. I think I speak for everyone when I say, no thank you. Of the four seasons, I would have to say spring is my favorite. It’s the perfect combination of sun and flowers and that lovely light breeze that keeps everything just right. Summer is still right over the horizon, winter is firmly in the rearview mirror and nature is in full flourishing mode. What more could you ask for? Well, other than a few more feet of snow to play in – but I assume even the biggest fans of winter outdoor activities have probably had their fill by now. Plus, for those of us interested in the “spring cleaning” aspect of things, it’s

the ideal time to reorganize – closets, junk drawers, piles of paperwork, life as a whole… to take stock and give everything a good, old-fashioned refresh. It’s amazing the cobwebs you find when you take a moment to stop and take inventory, mentally and otherwise. So, to all, enjoy the season. All of them. Each one is only three months long, just enough to savor the nuances without becoming too encumbered by the flaws. Sure, April will most likely bring the usual array of showers; but remember, May, in all its glory, is just around the corner. Everyone has a preference. Regardless, we should all make a point of enjoying each and every day.

Musicians Heard Across Country Two student musicians at Edmund W. Miles Middle School represented the Amityville School District with pride when they were invited to join elite ensembles from other schools this winter. Patrick Abate, an eighthgrader, played saxophone as a member of the 2014-2015 SCMEA All-County Middle School Instrumental

Jazz Ensemble when the organization held its SCMEA Day of Jazz at Centereach High School in February. Selection to this ensemble was highly competitive, with musicians from all across Suffolk County vying for a spot in the ensemble. On January 16th, eighth-grader James Carey represented the school

district at the 2015 SCMEA Day of Horn event held at Northport High School. Carey joined a league of French Horn players from all over Suffolk County that participated in the event, which featured workshops, rehearsals and a performance in a “Massed Horn Ensemble.”

Without the Mesopotamians, many of the things we use on a daily basis would not exist. One of the many inventions of the Mesopotamians was the creation of the wheel. The wheel was invented around 3500 B.C.E. The Sumerians used the wheels so that they could construct wheeled carts. By doing so, they were able to create extremely efficient ways of transporting goods. Clearly, the wheel plays a significant role in our society today. Without the wheel, cars, trains and even airplanes could not function. The wheel helped the Sumerians tremendously thousands of years ago, and it continues to help us today. Another major invention of the Mesopotamians was the creation of iron metallurgy. By 3000 B.C.E., the Mesopotamians attempted

Continuing on Mr. Sales’ theme, Mr. Leunig presented the State of the Copiague School District, in which he discussed the challenges currently facing the District. “Educationally, we are on very solid footing; fiscally, we are on shifting sand,” he said. “We need the help of our legislators to get us on much firmer fiscal ground so that we can continue to offer our children these programs. To get there, we need the restoration of the remaining GEA funds, which for Copiague is $1.7 million. But then, we need enough state aid each year so that we have a sustainable revenue stream that helps offset the limiting factors of the tax cap.”

Following the theme “Great Schools Make Great Communities: Working Together For A Brighter Future,” the Copiague School District hosted its annual Community Summit Breakfast on March 7th. Welcoming more than 275 community members, as well as local legislators, the Copiague Board of Education and administration delivered a state of the district report, focusing on the district’s finances, aging infrastructure, millions of lost state aid, while simultaneously highlighting student successes. “The breakfast is an opportunity for the legislators to hear the concerns of our community, as well as for the District to thank them for their past support,”

During the summit, audience members were introduced to the Class of 2015 top 10 and enjoyed performances by Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School’s jazz band and madrigal choir, Great Neck Road Elementary School’s sign language club and Susan E. Wiley Elementary School’s dance club. They also watched an “in their own words” multimedia presentation featuring students discussing what they value in their education. To conclude the morning program, attendees participated in a school community input activity to elicit input and support for a capital improvement project. The information gathered will assist the Board in tailoring the project for the community. Legislators in attendance at the summit, in order of speaking appearance, included Town of Babylon Deputy Supervisor Tony Martinez, Presiding Officer of the Suffolk County Legislature DuWayne Gregory, New York State Assemblywoman Kimberly Jean-Pierre and New York State Sen. Bringing birthday joy to children and families in need, members of the third-grade student government at Deauville Garden West Elementary School in the Copiague School District filled goody bags with party gifts and supplies to help homeless children celebrate their birthday. Birthday Wishes is a non-profit organization that helps bring the magic of a birthday party to thousands of homeless children in shelters or transitional living facilities each year. Previous

fundraising efforts by the student government provided the birthday supplies and presents needed for the goody bags.
