Late Kindergarten Registration Late kindergarten registration for the Copiague School District will be held at the district administrative office located in the Copiague Middle School from April 1-3 from 8:30-11:30 a.m. and 1-3 p.m., by appointment only. Appointments can be made using the online system on the district’s website at www.copiague. k12.ny.us. The registration page can be found under the Students and Families tab – Transportation & Registration – Registration

Information. Children who have turned age 5 on or before Dec. 1, 2020 are eligible to attend school in September 2020. Registration packets are available on the district website or can be picked up at the district’s administrative office, 2650 Great Neck Road, Copiague, New York. Registration requirements include proof of the child’s age, residence within the boundaries of the Copiague School District, and immunizations against polio, measles, rubella

(German measles), mumps, diphtheria and hepatitis B. Additional information on immunizations should be requested from your child’s physician. Showing Off Their Roots During Black History Celebration This year’s theme for the Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School Black History Month celebration on Feb. 27 was “Strong Roots, Amazing Achievement.” The event showcased the many talents of the student body and featured performances by the middle school and high school step teams as well as musical selections by the Madrigal Choir and jazz band. The celebration was hosted by Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School students Sevon Brown, Lanyah Ford and Jonah Ramos, who were introduced to the audience

with “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air” theme song. The Madrigal Choir presented three musical selections, including “Lift Every Voice and Sing,” “Cameroon Processional” and “Oh Happy Day” with solos by Sevon Brown and Sydney Forbes. The Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School and the Copiague Middle School step teams themed their performance “Step Up and Vote.” The jazz bands played two selections, “Low Ride” and “What Is Hip.” “Young Hearts” was performed by Zyliek Jackson, Bianca Joseph and Bridgette

Mendoza. Donovan Harris sang “My Strength” and Naroli Cabrera belted out a Beyoncé medley of “Nile” and “Freedom.” Members of the Drama Club performed a dramatic interpretation centered around Harlem. To close out the show, students, staff and administrators took to the stage to show off the African American fashions through the years. All proceeds from the Black History Month celebration benefit the security department’s scholarship fund.

FOURTH GRADERS CREATE 100 DAY BUCKET LIST - Fourth graders at Great Neck Road Elementary School in the Copiague School District spent the 100th day of school engaged in literacy lessons based on the number 100. Using their laptops, the students made a 100 day bucket list of all the things they want to do before they turn 100 years old. Bringing its membership total to 24, Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School held its voice to voice leadership induction ceremony for the 2020 cohort on Feb. 14 in the school’s library. Ten female students were inducted during the ceremony, presented by Walter G. O’ Connell Copiague High School Assistant Principal Tamika Eason. As each new members’ name was called, they were presented with a certificate and a string of

pearls, which were placed around their neck by a current member. The goal of the organization is to help young females find their inner strength and power. The mission of the initiative is to motivate and empower one another through teamwork and conversation. It was developed to provide opportunities for young women to gain awareness of their individual and collection skills, experiences and

professional goals. The following students were inducted into the voice to voice leadership: Kiran Ahmad, Tessa Bartoli, Jayleen Garcia, Yessica Hernandez-Garcia, Steycie Louis, Myra MendozaRodriguez, Zuri Milliner, Blanca Reyes, Cathrine Sakin and Brianna Sammy. The new inductees recited the leadership pledge and joined with existing members in circle to close out the ceremony.

Amityville Pair Earn Statewide Honors

Amityville Memorial High School’s DECA team attended the 2020 State Career Conference, Feb. 26-28 in Rochester and two students earned high marks in their events. The Distributive Education Clubs of America is a youth organization that prepares emerging leaders and entrepreneurs in business management and administration, finance,

hospitality and marketing in high schools around the world. Amityville students participated in the regional competition on Jan. 8 at Suffolk County Community College. At the state level, senior Amelia Tisk placed in top 10 on test performance in the Principles of Hospitality and Tourism category. Sophomore Mikhail Ankudovych finished top

10 on the test and top 10 overall in Principles of Business Management and Administration category. DECA students prepared for and attended the conferences under the direction of adviser Jennifer Schweigert, a business teacher at Amityville Memorial High School.

Book Lovers Of All Ages Celebrate Literature Kindergartners love their books at Northeast Elementary School in the Amityville Union Free School District, so it was quite a treat for them to be visited by guest readers throughout Love a Book Week from March 2-6. Librarian Tina Smith said she planned Love a Book Week to coincide with Read Across America Day and Dr. Seuss’s birthday on March 2. Special guests stopped by classrooms all week to read to students including board of education trustees, administrators, community members and students from the National Junior Honor

Society chapter at Edmund W. Miles Middle School. Before the Honor Society members read to pre-K and kindergarten students, they took part in a short workshop with Ms. Smith to learn how to read to children. Strategies they learned included how to introduce the author and illustrator, when to stop and ask questions, and how to reflect on the story after reading. She said that these techniques help children make stronger connections to a book and improve their reading comprehension. “I love that members of the Amityville community wanted to

be here,” Ms. Smith said. “You don’t have to be a teacher to read to children. Everybody has something to offer when they’re reading.” Ninth grader Wilnory Bouzy said that the children were very respectful while she was reading and asked very good questions. She talked with the youngsters about different story elements including the main idea and setting. Ashlyn Rodriguez, who read the Dr. Seuss book, “Oh the Thinks You Can Think,” said she had a fun time interacting with the youngsters. “They were so in love with learning,” she said.

He continued to push throughout the third period and gained a goahead takedown with 38 seconds left. “Going into the match, we had a game plan that we felt comfortable with,” said Copiague’s varsity wrestling coach Anthony Cipriano. “Understanding and respecting the wrestling skills that his opponent had, we wanted to focus on the strengths that Malik had that we felt would get him the victory. Malik did a great job sticking to that plan, ultimately earning the top spot. Understanding what was in front of him, Malik became focused and serious by the middle of the season. With hard work, he put himself in the right spot to move forward and become the 220-pound New York state champion.” Leftenant improved to 40-5 and became the second state champion in school history. Copiague’s only state champion came in 1993 when junior Liston Brown won the 119-pound weight class. “We are so proud of Malik and congratulate him on his amazing accomplishment,” said Copiague’s athletic director William Bennett. “He proved to be the toughest competitor out there. He wrestled like a true champ all the way through. Even at the times he was down in points, he overcame adversity and found ways to win. That is the mark of a champion.”
