relocated easily enough, you know, in case there happens to be anything good on Animal Planet. And my plant, I can’t say enough about its lengthy silk leaves, which create the perfect spot to curl up on and nap at any time of the day or night. No more frayed fins for this betta! This plant is smooth sailing, allowing me to ﬂit to and fro and wedge myself in between its fronds without doing any further damage to my lovely physique. These days, the Human tends to feed me twice a day, once before she leaves for work in the morning and again when she returns home in the evening – just a few ﬂakes each time (I do have to maintain my figure after all). I am having a bit of trouble navigating around the filter though, as it tends to blow my precious meal clear across the tank just as I have it within my grasp. What a workout!

Every few years, members of the Copiague Board of Education spend a day traveling through the district, visiting select classrooms to observe students engaged in lessons and activities, during a special Board Day at School. To begin, board members and administrators observed student arrival procedures at Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High

IT’S TIME TO GO OUT!

On March 8th, 11th- and 12th-graders at Amityville Memorial High School received a visit from racial segregation activist and member of the 1960s civil rights Greensboro 4 group, Mr. Joseph McNeil. After being refused service in 1960 at the fiveand-dime store Woolworth, Mr. McNeil, along with three of his college

friends, participated in a series of nonviolent sit-in protests in Greensboro, North Carolina, forming the Greensboro 4. This protest led to Woolworth removing its policy of racial segregation in the southern United States and was an instrumental action in the civil rights movement. During the visit,

students watched a portion of the PBS television station documentary on the Greensboro 4, which consisted of historical footage, interviews and reenactments. For the remainder of the visit, they listened to Mr. McNeil speak about his life experiences and asked questions.

Evolution Explored The library at Edmund W. Miles Middle School in the Amityville Union Free School District was transformed into a space for scientific discovery as eighth- and ninth-graders performed DNA analysis lab experiments using samples provided by the Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory. Over the course of twodays, students participated in DNA fingerprinting and executed comparative analysis to examine the skull of hominids. To begin, students learned about forensic DNA fingerprinting and genetic diagnosis. For the experiment, they prepared a sample of their own DNA from cells obtained by saline mouthwash. The automated technique of polymerase chain

reaction was used to amplify the DNA fragments and was analyzed by performing agarose gel electrophoresis. Students were able to trace their evolutionary track through mitochondrial DNA. The following day, the library was converted into New York City’s Museum of National History laboratory as the young scientists used fossil evidence and DNA analysis to understand human evolution. Students measured the brain cases and features of different hominids to determine how closely they are related to humans. They also observed the earliest stone tool technologies to determine how early ancestors hunted and survived in their environment.

Activist Visits

Students were able to determine the type of food source each hominid consumed, how they walked, bipedal or quadrupedal, bone structure and comparative evolutionary growth. They constructed an evolutionary tree to illustrate their findings. “Students were able to objectively evaluate human evolution from a personal perspective using their own DNA and tracking like a forensic scientist,” said science chairperson Deborah Charles. “To gather data by actually touching, measuring and evaluating replicas of fossils more than four million years ago provides the basis for scientific analysis.”

film genre, the play follows the story of Frederick Frankenstein, pronounced “Fronkensteen,” after he inherits a castle in Transylvania containing characters Igor, Inga and Frau Blucher. Upon discovering the secret entrance to his grandfather’s laboratory, Frederick decides to carry on the family experiments and creates a monster of his own.

Community Connection Continuing their tradition of hosting local community members and politicians for a Saturday morning breakfast and state of the schools, the Copiague School District Board of Education and administration held their annual Community Summit, “Our School, Our Community: A Strong Connection,” on March 5th. “The summit is an opportunity for us to celebrate the success we’ve had, discuss some of the issues we face in the upcoming budget and collaborate on ways we can make things better,” said Board of Education President Brian J. Sales. During his speech, Sales focused on educational funding and thanked New York State Assemblywoman Kimberly Jean-Pierre and New York State Sen. Michael Venditto for their efforts in supporting Copiague, including the additional funds they’ve secured for district

students and programs. He also discussed the various ways in which the board is connecting with Copiague’s students, including attending Board Day at school and hosting high school students in roundtable discussions. Overseeing her first summit as superintendent of schools, Dr. Kathleen Bannon focused her “State of the District” address on the multitude of positive academic, athletic and technological accomplishments happening within the walls of Copiague. “I have stood up on opening day and said my philosophy, and everyone’s philosophy here, is ‘if it’s good for kids, it’s good.’ We are very proud that we are focused and moving in that direction.” Dr. Bannon also discussed the district’s financial future, as well as the need for an increase in state funding in order to maintain its current educational programs.

“What we need is an increase in state aid, which can be accomplished by unfreezing the Foundation Aid formula,” she said. The summit also featured student musical performances, spotlights on elementary, middle and high school clubs and an introduction of the Class of 2016 top 10 students. To conclude the morning program, attendees participated in a school community input activity to elicit feedback on ways the district can best promote its programs to the community. In addition to Assemblywoman JeanPierre and Sen. Venditto, legislators in attendance at the summit included Town of Babylon Supervisor Richard Schaffer, Deputy Supervisor Tony Martinez and Councilman Thomas Donnelly and Presiding Officer of the Suffolk County Legislature DuWayne Gregory.
