‘Tis the time of year when all become Irish for a day, in the honorary sense anyway, and partake in the various St. Patrick’s Day celebrations held across Long Island and New York City. The funny thing is – well, perhaps more ironic than outright humorous – is that when my family and I traveled to Ireland several years ago, we were somewhat surprised to learn that those native to the Emerald Isle do not commemorate the occasion in even remotely the same manner as we do. In fact, the holiday takes on a far more religious tone, filled with pilgrimages to mountaintops to honor St. Patrick himself; a far cry from the drinking and parades which wind through most main streets on this side of the pond.
Speaking of Ireland, and travel, I certainly wish to do more of it, both here and abroad. Before our family trip, I had never been on a plane in my 30 years on this earth; nor, of course, had I bothered to apply for a passport. Old-fashioned road trips across the good old U.S. of A had never held much appeal due to my, shall we say, occasional tendency toward motion sickness during any car ride surpassing two or so hours. And so, at this point, my travels have extended ever so slightly north and south of New York, about halfway down the east coast – no further. And my passport, while it proudly sports that one stamp from Ireland, has remained packed away ever since. Unacceptable, I know. And with that, a new season is on the horizon, although whether Mother Nature will
cooperate remains to be seen. March has always been a notoriously fickle month, what with the remnants of winter storms to contend with, spring rains hovering overhead and blossoms waiting to burst forth from the trees. It is a time of beginnings, of growth, of shaking off the chill of the last several months to head out and feel the warmth of the sun as we explore the great outdoors. No need to pack a suitcase – just hop in the car and go, in any direction, and enjoy the beauty on this long island that we call home. So, as you head out in your green attire this week, take a deep breath of fresh air and start planning some fun activities to see you through to summer. Spring may be a gateway to the season of sun and surf and sand, but it is pretty spectacular in its own right. Enjoy it.

The fun continued at night, and this time their parents were able to join in the excitement. At various learning stations, children sorted colored goldfish, found rhyming words and made Cat in the Hat inspired hats. There was also a group game of word bingo and a demonstration of educational iPad apps. “There were a lot of literacy and math games,” said
Principal Dr. Pauline Collins. “The activities at each center reinforced the learning that takes place in school and allows the parents to see these activities so they can help their children at home.” Throughout the week, guest readers including administrators, board of education members and members of the middle school’s National Junior Honor Society visited classrooms to serve as guest readers.

A Call to Action Holocaust survivor Werner Reich visited Amityville Memorial High School on March 7th to not only speak about one of the biggest atrocities in history, but to relay a message to students about character. Mr. Reich met with 10th-graders, who study European history as part of the social studies curriculum. His PowerPoint presentation included photographs, maps and cartoons, which illustrated his story about being arrested, held in a
concentration camp and finally liberated at 17 years old. The 90-year-old Suffolk County resident and author used his story to spread an anti-bullying message. He said an act of oppression has four groups of people: the victim, the bully, the good people who do nothing and the good people who do something. He encouraged students to be the latter by standing up for others who are being treated unfairly. His advice to them was, “Don’t wait for others. Be the first to
act.” Dawn Mizrachi, chairwoman of the high school social studies department, said that there are very few Holocaust survivors still alive, and it was a rewarding experience for students to hear from Mr. Reich and to ask him questions. She explained that they not only received a history lesson from someone who lived it, but learned how to apply that knowledge to their own lives.

February was Black History Month and students at Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School recognized the event with songs, dance performances and poetry during a Black History Month celebration in the auditorium on February 28th. “Honoring the Past, Inspiring the Future” was
the theme for this year’s event. Led by Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School students Cameren Jackson and Sarah St. Jean, the celebration kicked off with a performance of “Lift Every Voice and Sing” by the Madrigal Choir. Dance performance by the Copiague Lady Step team and Hip Hop Club reflected on the music
from the past and the present. The jazz band performed a song by Duke Ellington and poems celebrating black history were presented throughout the celebration. All proceeds from the Black History Month celebration are donated to the security department scholarship fund.

Seussical Learning The works of children’s author Dr. Seuss were celebrated at Northwest Elementary School in the Amityville Union Free School District on March 2nd with read alouds, crafts and writing activities. The students joined their peers from around the country to mark Read Across America Day on what would have been the renowned writer’s 113th birthday. Second-grade teacher Dana Herz welcomed guest readers, including staff
members and parents and grandparents of students. The children completed activity sheets about their favorite Dr. Seuss book they heard that day. They also made their own “Cat in the Hat” inspired hats and created filmstrip biographies about Dr. Seuss. “Dr. Seuss was a pioneer in children’s reading,” Ms. Herz said. “It’s a great day for the students to see that reading can be fun, and to inspire them to become
better readers.” Children in Hilda Brown’s first-grade bilingual class read “The Cat in the Hat,” then watched a portion of the animated movie, and compared the two. Second-graders in Olimpia Karounos’ class made their own green slime using cornstarch, water and food coloring after reading “Bartholomew and the Oobleck.”
