If life has taught any of us a fairly universal lesson, it is that there are plenty of things beyond our control, just as many things within our grasp; and, as good or bad as a situation may seem at a particular moment, it is apt to change in the blink of an eye. This is why it’s so incredibly important to hold on to the moments of peace and prosperity, fleeting as they may be, while always driving forward to overcome the obstacles which present themselves. If you run over a few lemons in the process; well, that’s what sometimes leads to the sweetest batches of lemonade.

clarinet in the school band, and conducted Amityville’s marching band at the Newsday Marching Band Festival. With an interest in writing and helping others, she has written several books about teenagers overcoming adversity. Trevony volunteers in the transport department at Stony Brook University Hospital and Jerinna interns at Cold Spring Harbor National Laboratories studying the decision-making process of rats. Both tutor other students at the Amityville Public Library and have taken courses at Farmingdale State College through the Smart Scholars program.

The Welcome Friends soup kitchens have provided hot, nutritious meals five days every week for over 27 years. The volunteer staff has increased to more than 200 remarkable members, and the guests typically number between 50 to sometimes more than 70 each night. Welcome Friends operates with a 100% volunteer staffed organization, assuring contributors that their donations are used exclusively for the preparation and serving of meals. The volunteers together form an outstanding team that addresses hunger and works to expand relationships with individual supporters, local food markets, farm stands, religious institutions, community leaders, local village government and other agencies. After almost three decades serving the greater Port Jefferson area, the leaders and volunteers of Port Jefferson’s Soup announced their decision to become an independent notfor-profit corporation named “Welcome Friends.” The operation has become self-sustaining, with a solid foundation of local community support. Welcome Friends is currently in need
of the following volunteer positions: Cooks, Assistant Cooks/ Food Prep and Pick Up/Delivery and a Grant Writer. Black History Celebration Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School recognized Black History Month with a celebration on February 28th that showcased the many talents of the student body. Performances featured the dance and step team as well as musical selections by the Madrigal Choir and jazz band. The celebration, themed “Honoring the Past, Inspiring the Future,” was hosted by Walter G.
O’Connell Copiague High School students Kyree Scott and Tiare Gordon. The Madrigal Choir presented three musical selections, including “Lift Every Voice and Sing.” The dance ensemble’s performance was followed by the Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School and the Copiague Middle School step teams. The Drama Club presented powerful and inspiration quotes from famous
African-Americans past and present. For the final performance of the show, Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School senior Osazuwa Eghafona played the bass guitar while his brother joined him on stage on the trumpet for a musical selection. The Amityville athlete finished the 50-kilometer or 31-mile course in three hours, 24 minutes and 29 seconds, good for fourth overall in the national championship. Carrington competed with runners of all ages from across the country. However, New York athletes had a strong showing at the event, as the championships were once again hosted in Lloyd Harbor’s Caumsett State Park. Carrington finished top Long Islander within the field, and also placed in the masters division, for runners 40 years of age and older. Carrington, 45, was the second male master, finishing seven minutes behind third place runner Aaron Heath, 43, of Chappaqua, NY. The USATF 50K Road Championships was held in Caumsett State Park, co-hosted by the Greater Long Island Running Club, and features a 5K-loop course, making it an incredible race for spectators. Recruiting New Talent
The nationally-recognized marching band from Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School visited Copiague Middle School studentmusicians on March 2nd in effort to pique their interest in joining the band. The marching band, led by band director Eric Dobmeier, showed off some of their
instruments and musical selections to the middle school students. Marching band members spoke about some of their individual experiences. The musicians, along with members of the Color Guard, played part of their routine for the audience of young musicians. They also showed a video of their
performance in Syracuse last year. The band is beginning its recruiting process now before it starts rehearsals in May. The band practices during the summer months and culminates its season with a performance in Syracuse.
