The Copiague Eagle Engine Company Volunteer Fire Department will host their twenty-first annual Comedy Night Dinner & Fundraiser on Saturday, March 14th, with America’s top headlining comedians. Hosting the show is the incomparable Last Comic Standing finalist, Kerri Louise. Highenergy, commanding and versatile, Louise can

entertain any audience with her warmth and razor-edge wit. Her television appearances include Comics Unleashed, The Montel Show, NBC’s Access Hollywood, The Apprentice, ABC’s The View, Comedy Central, VH-1 and 20/20. The feature act is fastrising comedian/actor and New York native, Chris Roach who has brought his unique and self deprecating sense of humor to some of the biggest and best known stages such as The Borgata in Atlantic City and Caroline’s on Broadway. Known for some of his work on television commercials, Roach has also appeared on Comedy Central, The Michael J. Fox Show, and had a recurring role as Rodney the loveable mental patient on the soap opera One Life to Live. Headlining the show is Chuck Nice, an eighteenyear veteran of stand up comedy with a rich

history in television and radio. For eight years he provided comic relief to the Radio Chick Show, bringing the funny to New York’s radio airwaves. Nice has been equally busy making a name for himself on the small screen as the host of Buy Like A Mega Millionaire on HGTV, can be seen regularly on the Today Show, has guest hosted Joy Behar’s Say Anything and co-hosted The View. Chuck maintains his radio presence as the co-host of Star Talk Radio with Dr. Neil Degrasse Tyson where he provides humorous commentary on one his favorite subjects-science. 500. It’s a pretty big number. Nearly ten years’ worth of weekly columns under the moniker “In Step,” a title suggested by my dear friend, co-worker and “agent” of sorts, since passed, Peter Schleifer. It was meant to be a take off on my - at that point - 13 years of dancing and the idea that, somehow, I could find a way to engage our weekly readership with my random ramblings and musings on life. It sounded like a pretty tall order then, and remains so, but having had a passion for writing since the days of poetry units and short story exercises in elementary school, I felt I was up for the challenge. To be given the opportunity to write for a living, to do something I loved and reach an audience… well, that’s pretty special any way you slice it.

The topics may have been varied, the styles quite diverse, but at the root of it all was that feeling that this was something I could do. Sure, there have been weeks when coming up with an original idea, any idea, was somewhat tedious. Scanning through the archive, there have been plenty of recycled concepts, even a few exact reruns of “classics.” (Classics? Really? Who do you think you are, Ed Lowe?) But through it all, that same passion has always remained. This is why I studied journalism. This was the reason for my career choice, in spite of all those detractors who warned that

it was impossible to make a living in this field. Ultimately, though, it was exactly that “reality” that served as added inspiration for me to go after my dreams. After all, who’s to say what’s profitable, what’s a guarantee for success? And what is success, if you’re not doing something you love? Ten years. 500 columns. Such a long time; such a lofty milestone. So much has changed since July of 2005, much of which has been reflected in those columns. They serve as a public diary of sorts, documenting the highs and lows, and a showcase for my efforts to somehow encapsulate them into words. Thank you to all those readers who have supported me along the way. Here’s to more memories and milestones!

Faith McCombs, an eighth-grade student at Copiague Middle School, was selected by Stony Brook University School of Social Work to participate in the 28th Annual Youth Academy “Counseling & Treating People of Colour: An International Perspective” Leadership Conference held last December. Nominated by her mother, McCombs along with other 10-17 yearold students traveled to New Orleans, Louisiana to attend the peer leadership conference from December 7th-10th. Counting With Meaning As part of a 100th day of school counting activity, kindergarten students at Copiague’s Deauville Gardens West Elementary School collected and donated 100 canned food items to a local food pantry. With their hand-made 100th day of school hats, kindergarteners lined

Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone announced the launch of “Faces of the Race,” a campaign to highlight runners registered for the inaugural Suffolk County Marathon & Half Marathon in Support of Veterans on September 13th. “Many of these runners have compelling stories, have overcome adversity or personal challenges to compete,” Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone said. “Some are running to honor members of the military or people lost in the September 11th terror attacks. Others are signed up for this first Suffolk marathon so they can be a part of history. the Boston marathon. The marathon has a distinctly planned route that was designed to showcase and drive tourism toward downtowns along the Great South Bay. The race, which is a Boston Marathon qualifier, will begin and end at Heckscher State Park in East Islip with a Taste of Long Island wine and food festival to end race festivities. Suffolk County has partnered with New York State to host this inaugural event. For some race participants, the Suffolk marathon is their first full marathon, while other registrants have been competing in marathons, tough mudder races and triathlons for years. With a thrilling program that featured dance, step and drumming, Park Avenue Memorial Elementary School, in the Amityville School District, observed Black History Month on February 24th. Beginning with a stunning performance of the steel drums from Caribbean drum band “Steel Impressions,” the audience gathered in Park Avenue’s auditorium

heard from students about famous black dancers and choreographers and watched the 21st Century Dance Group perform an array of routines under the choreography of Dee Coghiel and Danielle Coles. The evening also featured a vocal performance from student Jackeline Andino and closed with an audience-participation step session led by Kenneth Williams.

Sixth-grade teacher Nakia Williams emceed the event. Special guest, Suffolk County Legislature Presiding Officer DuWayne Gregory, was in attendance for the vibrant and informative evening. That day, he recorded a 4.39 second 40-yard dash, which ranked among the 20 fastest receivers in the 2014 NFL draft. The Dallas Cowboys signed L’Damian as an undrafted free agent after the draft. He is currently a wide receiver on the Miami Dolphins. L’Damian sees his story as one of an unimaginable opportunity rather than heartbreak. With his determination and great attitude, L’Damian became an NFL player, but more importantly supported his family. The moral of his life story is not only to be thankful for what you have, but also to stay positive and keep moving forward. If L’Damian can overcome such difficult obstacles, you can too. He believes without these difficult experiences, he wouldn’t be the person he is today. L’Damian plans to keep working hard, learn new things, and stay true to himself.

Kindergarten students at Northeast School, in the Amityville School District, got a hands-on lesson about the heart and how to keep it healthy on February 25th. With the help of Dr. Veronica Henry, a nurse and the chief diversity officer at Farmingdale State College, students in Andrew Babington’s class the event with opening remarks about the importance of Black History Month. He introduced singers in teacher Melissa Asbell’s class who sang “Lift Every Voice and Sing.” He also introduced a full cast of students who researched and composed biographical readings about prominent African-American figures in history. From President Barack Obama and Rosa Parks, to Harriet Tubman and George Washington Carver, the presenting

students added to the flavor of their readings by dressing up like their assigned historical figure. The audience was also treated to a step and dance routine from Amityville High School students in the 21st Century Dance Group and the Interact Club under teacher Brenda King.
