The Art League of Long Island’s ninth annual “Go APE” Advanced Placement Student Exhibition features 2-D and 3-D works by 122 students from 37 Long Island High Schools. This is an opportunity for what may be the first of many times these promising young art students will show their work in a professional gallery setting. The exhibit is on view in the League’s Jeanie Tengelsen Gallery through March 13th. Long Ago & Far Away By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Time continues to march on, and those moments we so casually took for granted along the way become nothing more than a distant memory, relegated to the nostalgia pile, to be savored in the imagination only. The difference, though, is that these ﬂashbacks are increasingly from not so long ago, mere years, rather than decades… yet they seem a lifetime away, just out of reach. It’s the little things, too, the laughs shared, the stories told, the impromptu gatherings, the gifts exchanged, the memories made. Whether with family members, friends, co-workers, even the occasional stranger, every moment is part of something

larger, a curve in the path – your path – of life. Every decision made, or not made; each chance encounter or outlined goal – all leads to the point we are currently at, for better or worse. How amazing to be able to foresee the consequences of our actions; but then, our choices would be far simpler, wouldn’t they? Gone would be the mystery, the spontaneity, the happy accidents that tend to occur along the way when you simply close your eyes and just let life take you by the hand. There are those who believe in destiny; and there are those who refuse to think we don’t have as much input in our affairs as any otherworldly force. Which is right? Who’s to say. The only indisputable fact is that everything does

happen for a reason. People come into our lives, or go, as the case may be; and we are better for it. Every chance meeting is a lesson in disguise, to be determined at a later date. In the meantime, we go on, as does time. Our world grows smaller as circumstances change our daily dynamics, and we are forced to adjust, whether we care to or not. The memories fade, and their significance wanes in the face of more urgent, pressing matters. But we should never forget… the people, the places, the roads taken – all have led to here and now. And one day, not so very far away, this, too, will be but a snapshot in the giant album of life. We had best preserve it from now.

PARP Kickoff As a kick off for their Parents As Reading Partners (PARP) monthlong event, students at Park Avenue Memorial Elementary School in the Amityville Union Free School District received a visit from Newsday editor and self-published author Sandra H. Miller. During the visit, Miller explained how her life experiences were her inspiration for writing “Saplings and Sisters.”

Written in a poetic structure, she read the story aloud as the students followed along on the projector screen and yelled out the rhyming words. After the reading, Miller shared examples of life lessons that are evident throughout the story and offered students some creative writing techniques. “It’s [the story] a compilation of experiences and wishes for a legacy of

kids to learn to nourish each other and the planet,” said Miller. For the entire month of March, parents are encouraged to read with their children and help them achieve new reading goals at home. Students will log the total amount of minutes they read each night and the most dedicated readers will receive a prize.

Drawing Awareness During the February 29th Copiague Board of Education meeting, students Brianna Donovan, Gim Gousse, Madison Sims and Deashia Swan were recognized by the board for their winning entries in the annual Knights of Columbus Substance Abuse Art Poster Contest. Additionally, Kevin Rodriguez was honored

for receiving honorable mention in the contest. In front of family and friends, former Grand Knight Bob Waidler and Grand Knight Michael Pagano from the Our Lady of the Assumption Council of the Knights of Columbus presented each student with an award certificate of participation and a gift certificate provided by

the Knights. On hand to congratulate the students were Superintendent of Schools Dr. Kathleen Bannon, board members, Coordinator of Fine Arts Jennifer Pierre-Louis and art teachers Maria Ostrofsky and Travis White. The students’ artwork will now move on to the state-level competition.

The 6th Annual Drug and Alcohol Poster Contest 1st Place Winners were recently honored - five students from different age categories. The truth is: poetry is all around us. It’s in the sun, as it rises over the horizon. It’s in the moon, as it shines through the clouds. It’s in the way the light reﬂects off her eyes. It’s in the clouds, the trees, a weary morning’s coffee. Chaotic and beautiful in fashion, but yes, poetry surrounds us. It just waits to be found.

To celebrate Black History Month, kindergarten students at Northeast School in the Amityville Union Free School District hosted a special musical performance for family members and peers. For the celebration, each class collectively

dressed in the same color to represent colors of the rainbow. Under the direction of music teacher Nicole Altamura, students sang a variety of songs that represented unity, culture and historical figures in black history. Featured songs included “Sing about Martin,” arranged by

PAMES Performance pieces to honor the culture, traditions and legacy of historical figures in black history. The celebration began on a high note with students Orchid Delaleu, Samantha Molina and Raychel Preza singing their rendition of James Weldon Johnson’s “Lift Every Voice and Sing.” Throughout the show, students educated the audience about historical landmarks founded by and in honor of men and women in black history. Dance Group and Step Group performed an array of routines under the choreography of Dee Coghiel and Danielle Coles. Emceed by student Mikhail Ankudovych, the evening also featured a vocal performance by PAMES alumna Shaakirah Nazim-Harris. February 24th. The theme of the night was Reader’s Theater where families practiced and performed humorous skits. Used as props for their performance, students created sock puppets with

In an effort to promote Internet safety and address the topic of cyberbullying, students at Amityville’s Park Avenue Memorial Elementary School participated in an interactive assembly titled “NetSmartz” led by Deputy Sheriff Jacob Gross from the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Department. During the presentation,

students heard an ageappropriate message about ways to be safe on the Internet and the importance of treating others with respect. Students watched an educational video that identified four rules of online safety: tell a trusted adult if you see something that makes you uncomfortable,
