For close to 15 years, Copiague Middle School’s Builders Club participates in an annual tradition of visiting local seniors on Valentine’s Day. On February 14th, along with their adviser Maria Ostrofsky, the students

traveled to the Tanner Park Senior Center for their yearly celebration. The Builders Club members connected with the local seniors by spending quality time with one another. During their visit, students created

personalized Valentine’s Day cards for the seniors and hand-delivered the cards along with a rose. The seniors and students spent time together on the dance ﬂoor, learning the moves to some of their favorite songs.

Musings on March In like a lion… so blow the winds of March, and with them, promises of springtime blossoms nurtured by the warmth of the sun. But until then, we must contend with the last of winter’s storms, cold and rainy as they may be. Seems to be a metaphor for life as a whole, this month of transition which ushers us out of the doldrums of our hibernation into newfound energy and possibility. Of course, change is not necessarily seasonal, nor is it always dictated by Mother Nature, but the symbolism holds true nonetheless. Being of Irish descent, one of the more notable milestones has always been St. Patrick’s Day; however, upon visiting the Emerald Isle several years back, I was

intrigued to learn that the date holds little significance for those who reside across the Atlantic. The celebration which ensues on the main streets of many cities in America is, in fact, unique to the great U.S. of A. While spring officially arrives in just about two weeks, I have always associated the beginning of the season with the arrival of the Easter bunny and all the pastel decor it brings. Once April gets underway, it’s a fast track to warmer days ahead, afternoons spent soaking up the sun on the beach and summer concerts under the stars. But I digress. March, the month of tumult and turmoil, fading out into the serenity of spring. So it ﬂows, and with

it we too are carried on the breeze as it beckons better things ahead. In the words of a quote I recently came across, We do not fear the unknown. We fear what we think we know about the unknown. A wise sentiment indeed. If only we could manage to harness these apprehensions and redirect them into positive motivation and drive to move forward, we would all be in much better position to succeed. Easier said than done, as with most things; but still, worth the effort in changing our mentality. Perhaps in the spring. ’Til then, stay warm and dry and enjoy these last few weeks of winter. And then, out like a lamb… to brighter days just over the horizon.

Welcome Friends of Greater Port Jefferson, Inc., DBA Welcome Friends

The Welcome Friends soup kitchens have provided hot, nutritious meals five days every week for over 27 years. The volunteer staff has increased to more than 200 remarkable members, and the guests typically number between 50 to sometimes more than 70 each night. Welcome Friends operates with a 100% volunteer staffed organization, assuring contributors that their donations are used exclusively for the preparation and serving of meals. The volunteers form an outstanding team that addresses hunger and works to expand relationships with individual supporters, local food markets, farm stands, religious institutions, community leaders and local village government. They begin the day early, picking up and delivering food donations. The food is then stored, sorted and prepared for the chefs. Volunteers set up, serve and clean after mealtimes. After almost three decades serving the greater Port Jefferson area, the leaders

and volunteers of Port Jefferson’s Soup Kitchen announced their decision to become an independent not-for-profit corporation, named “Welcome Friends.” The operation has become selfsustaining with a solid foundation of local community support. As they enter this exciting phase, the new corporation will serve our neighbors in the same caring tradition that has been the hallmark of these soup kitchens. Welcome Friends has independently met the challenge to become selfsustaining to ensure that guests need not fear the loss of meals. Under the leadership of the Executive Committee and Kitchen Coordinators, volunteers create a sense of community for neighbors affected by hunger and poverty by serving them with dignity and respect in a safe welcoming environment. Welcome Friends is currently in need of the following volunteer positions: Cooks, Assistant Cooks/ Food Prep and Pick Up/Delivery and a Grant Writer! I was finally able to stop coughing and he looked up at me - still down on one knee because I had forgotten to answer him! I finally realized and said, “Yes, 100 million times, YES!” He got up and we kissed and I was crying tears of pure joy! I realized he had painstakingly hand-picked out hundreds of marshmallows over weeks and weeks to give me the absolute sweetest, thoughtful engagement I could have ever imagined. It may not have been picture-perfect for everyone, but it couldn’t have been more perfect for us. Celebrating 10 Years This year marks a full decade since SchoolBusiness Partnerships of Long Island, Inc. (SBPLI) began presenting FIRST® LEGO® League Jr. to students across the region. What began as a small (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) STEMfocused initiative for students age six to 10 has now grown into a powerhouse program aimed at igniting the creativity of children on nearly 100 teams. Each year, FIRST reveals a new and exciting challenge, dubbed this year as AQUA ADVENTURESM, for which students will have to do research and present their findings at one of three FIRST LEGO League Expos. During this year’s Expos, which are slated to take

place Saturday, March 3rd at Mineola High School and Sunday, March 4th, at Longwood High School, students are asked to navigate the uncharted waters of the Earth’s most important resource. Specifically, they were tasked with discovering from where everyday water resources come, and what happens on its way to consumers. After carefully selecting one way in which they use water and learning as much as possible about the process the water takes to get to that point, the students then work to develop a solution that improves upon the system. “We are so excited to celebrate 10 years of presenting FIRST LEGO League Jr. to students across the Island,” says Rick Ramhap, Program
