Being a student in seventh grade and a victim of bullying, my definition for bullying is when somebody thinks you are weak, “odd” or strange and makes fun of you for being who you are simply because you are different than them. Bullying is a very serious subject. Many cases of bullying happen each day, and kids do not tell an adult so they can get help putting an end to it. I made this mistake. I did not initially tell an adult, and this lack of action only made it worse for me. If you are getting bullied, you need to tell somebody or

you could eventually become self-conscious and doubt yourself. You could lose selfesteem and believe that you are what the bully says you are and isolate yourself from your friends. You think to yourself when your friends invite you to hang out, “They are only going to turn their backs on me too. I should just stay away from them from now on so they do not bully me.” Your friends may sometimes be the only people to help in these situations. When I was bullied, it was for three years! One in ten people get bullied every day. If you notice somebody being bullied, you need to stand up for them and tell the bully, “Stop it! Leave them alone.” If you are continuing to see somebody being bullied, you need to get an adult

immediately. Sometimes you may think that people are just joking around, but their intentions are to just make fun of you without you actually realizing what they are doing to you. Bullying does not have to be just verbal; it can also be cyber bullying and also physical bullying. In my case, I was verbally bullied. The words hurt dreadfully, but one way of handling it was by talking to my family. This was my way of getting the point that I was being bullied out, and I was able to also communicate my feelings when I talked about my situation. My family guided me in techniques to handle the situation and how to put an end to the bullying. Bullying is a serious subject.

SCDS Executive Director Dr. Paul Markowitz said, “Students from SUNY Stony Brook School of Dental Medicine, SUNY Farmingdale Hygiene

Program, Academy at Bixhorn Technical Center Dental Assisting Program, and residents from St. Charles Hospital volunteered their time to provide oral care and hygiene instruction. Dentists and specialists from all over Suffolk County donated their time and expertise to service the pediatric community. We examined over 250 patients.” Dental Assisting Teacher Carol Donohue said, “My

students got the experience of working with and learning from the college students and interacting with the community.” Tamara Chery, a dental assisting student from Patchogue Medford UFSD, said she volunteered because, “It’s just a good thing to do.” She always wanted to do something with teeth. “I know that sounds funny but I was inspired by my general dentist.”

Copiague High School’s Business Education Teacher Linda Aims and the Junior Chamber of Commerce held a Walka-thon on February 11th to raise money for the Long Island Chapter of the Leukemia and Lymphoma society. 75 kids participated including members of Key Club, S.O.U.L., Girls Track team and other high school students. Close to $1,000 dollars was raised in honor of Copiague resident and Copiague Chamber Board Member Melissa Firmes, who last year was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia and this year underwent a stem cell transplant. Suffolk County Legislator Kevin J. McCaffrey recently joined with staff members of Long Island Cares in their satellite location in Lindenhurst. In addition to the staff updating Legislator McCaffrey on the latest accomplishments of Long Island Cares, they shared vital statistics related to hunger and food insecurity on Long Island, particularly in Suffolk County. In the aftermath of Super Storm Sandy, the residents of Suffolk County learned just how important it is to have thriving food banks in every community. The work that Long Island Cares performed in the

wake of the storm was not only admirable and tremendous in scope, but it truly serves as a model for what a food bank should be. Moving forward, Long Island Cares strives to expand its reach into the communities, bringing us as close as we can get to ending both hunger and food insecurity. Of particular concern is being prepared for future natural disasters, so that no one has to be hungry on top of experiencing other traumatic events. Additionally, the staff mentioned that the number of hungry children on Long Island is significant, but it is not unrealistic

to expect a solution if the food banks and various levels of governments join in their efforts. “We are very fortunate to have an organization such as Long Island Cares in Suffolk County, and certainly right here in Lindenhurst with their satellite office,” said McCaffrey. “While the numbers regarding hunger and food insecurity on Long Island are troubling, particularly with respect to children, I am very optimistic that the problem can be solved if groups like Long Island Cares and local government work together on a continual basis.”
