had a Blue Nose Pit bull and a cat rescued from a carbon monoxide call. The adolescent mask barely fit the dog (too small) and we had to stuff rags around the mask for the cat to ensure he was receiving enough air because the mask was too big.” Thankfully, both pets survived, but it was clear that the department needed a better solution to deliver oxygen to family pets. So when he learned about Canine Company’s campaign to outfit first responders with oxygen masks designed for pets, he contacted the company. The donated masks are designed for the shape of an animal’s snout. Each set includes masks in three sizes to fit a wide range of pets – from small mammals like rabbits to giant breed dogs. According to Canine Company, donated masks were used by first responders to save more than 18 pets – including six dogs, 11 cats and a rabbit – last year. “At Canine Company, our mission is to help families keep their pets healthy, safe and happy at home,” says Renee Coughlin of Canine Company. “We do that with the products and services we offer, and through our pet masks donation campaign. Over the past 10 years, we’ve provided masks to more than 500 fire departments and rescue squads in the communities where we do business. And we look

Gibson was a key member and all-star athlete as part of the Copiague girls 2009 New York State Championship basketball team. During her time in the district, she became a 2000-plus point scorer and earned All-County, AllLong Island and All-State honors. She went on to play basketball at Assumption College, where she was named freshman player of
the year and became the second all-time leading scorer. For the past six years, Gibson has continued to develop her passion for the sport and desire to impact young female athletes in a positive way. She has launched her basketball training business and serves as a basketball official.

This Vegetarian Reuben Sandwich is a fun take on the traditional Jewish-style favorite, but swaps out fatty corned beef for stir-fried veggies!

Math on Their Minds How do you get students excited and engaged during math lessons? Just ask Copiague Middle School because the excitement is palpable in each and every classroom. Lessons incorporate hands-on learning, realworld scenarios, games and technology. For example, sixth-graders in Kirsten Ostrofsky’s class recently completed a statistics lesson – learning fractions, percentages and decimals – using Skittles. Seventh-graders in Cara
Horigan’s class were learning unit rates and participated in a scavenger hunt around the classroom to test their knowledge. Students in Paul Kounadis’ class had to figure out exponents and bases using different colored dice. In Richard Radziewicz’s class, students were using scientific notation to calculate the approximate distant of different planets in the solar system. In addition to these classroom lessons, Copiague Middle School
students have the opportunity to get involved in after-school activities. Math researchers are preparing and practicing their presentations for the math research papers they have written and will present at an AllCounty competition in the beginning of March. The Math Club/Team is open to all students, where they can go to have fun with math while others practice for upcoming math team competitions.

he human body and its immune system excels at fighting foreign invaders like bacteria and viruses. Signaling chemicals called interleukins tell cells whether they are needed to fight illness or they should wait in the wings. While these immune defenders are doing their jobs, soreness, fatigue and swelling can occur — the natural side effects of an immune system response — but will soon dissipate.
However, many people deal with immune systems that are consistently revved up, even when no invaders are present. This is the problem with many chronic diseases and immune system dysfunction. Unfortunately, the inflammation that is a hallmark of immune defense becomes a daily problem that may result in chronic pain and other complications. What many people may not realize is that the foods that they are putting into their bodies may exacerbate inflammatory responses, while others may help keep inflammation at bay.
As beneficial as some foods can be, it’s important to note that individuals are unique and certain foods may produce a particular response in some but not in others. Systematically isolating certain foods can help paint a picture of foods that can be problematic. But generally speaking, refined carbohydrates, sugar-sweetened beverages, fried foods, and processed meats may increase inflammation, advises Harvard Health Publishing. Conversely, certain foods and beverages that have been identified as reducing inflammation for many people. These include: tomatoes, olive oil, green leafy vegetables and cruciferous vegetables; nuts, like almonds and walnuts; fatty fish, berries, avocados, green tea, peppers, grapes, turmeric and dark chocolate. Such statistics are disconcerting, but they can serve as a wake-up call that compels people to prioritize their heart health. Fortunately, heart disease is often preventable, and people can employ various strategies to reduce their risk. If you smoke, stop smoking right now. One of the best things to do to protect the heart is to stop smoking. The Heart Foundation indicates that smoking reduces oxygen in the blood and damages blood vessel walls. here are new workout programs popping up in fitness centers around the U.S. that are allowing fitness-minded individuals to test their mettle. Recently, one of the more popular fitness regimens is HIIT, and it’s probably available at a fitness center near you.

Explore Benefits of HIIT Fitness T In essence, a lower intensity workout as “rest.” The workout will alternate between the working and recovery periods.
HIIT is an acronym for High Intensity Interval Training. The American College of Sports Medicine says HIIT held steady among the top fitness trends for 2017 and 2018. The crux of HIIT workout routines are sustained, intense exercise followed by active recovery periods. WebMD says that HIIT can be used with any type of popular cardio workout, including rowing, jumping rope, speed walking, stair climbing, and more. Many gyms also build programs around HIIT that may include “boot camp” type workouts that utilize equipment or exercises using people’s own body weight to burn calories. A typical HIIT training session lasts about 30 minutes. Workouts are performed at 80 to 90 percent of a person’s maximal heart rate, which is the number of times the heart will beat in a minute without overexerting itself. Recovery periods are not entirely rest. They tend to be shorter than active periods, and come in at around 40 to 50 percent of the maximal heart rate.
HIIT workouts can be effective at boosting your metabolism and helping people burn calories faster. They also help to develop physical endurance. The science behind the workouts has to do with EPOC, or excess post-exercise oxygen consumption. The fitness lifestyle resource Daily Burn says that HIIT will help burn more fat and calories than regular steady workouts because EPOC\0x2008 is an oxygen shortage in the body that occurs during the intense portions of the HIIT workouts.
During recovery, the body will ask for more oxygen, creating an after burn and a metabolic disturbance. The fitness guide, Fitness Blender, states that the intense training will result in the body burning calories at a higher rate for up to 48 to 72 hours after exercising. This means that the benefits of HIIT training continue even while you are, say, relaxing on the couch watching your favorite Netflix show later on that day. This type of workout regimen is especially good for those in relatively good shape, who need to drop a large amount of weight relatively quickly. For example, a new mother looking to drop
her baby weight. People may see greater results by doing HIIT workouts three times a week for half of the duration than they would if they were performing more typical workouts more frequently. For those whose schedules are already jam-packed, HIIT can be a more efficient way of exercising. HIIT requires a strong baseline fitness lev-
el, so beginners or those who have been out of the gym for some time are urged to start slowly. Also, since HIIT causes high demand on the heart and respiratory systems, it is essential to discuss the regimen with a doctor to find out if HIIT is a smart choice depending on your personal medical history. The National Sleep Foundation recently updated its sleep recommendations per age group to include categories “may be appropriate” and “not recommended.” This includes a range of hours that may be adequate for certain adults. Adults between the ages of 26 and 65 are advised to get seven to nine hours of sleep per evening. However, six hours or 10 hours also may be acceptable. People over the age of 65 need roughly seven to eight hours of sleep each night, though between five and six hours also may be fine. Knights of Columbus Honors Students Thirteen Copiague School District students were recognized at the February 11th board of education meeting by members of the Knights of Columbus in the organization annual poster and essay contests. The poster contest, now in its ninth year, had a record number of entries at 104 from Copiague student-artists. The goal of the contest is to raise awareness about drug
and alcohol abuse. The winners, who received certificates and prizes were: Deauville Gardens West: Carolina Acosta-Rivera and Sandavi McCants; Susan E. Wiley: Ivanna Gonzalez Rodriguez; Deauville Gardens East: Kiarisleidy Baez Fabian; Great Neck Road: Jazlyn Batista, Justin Martinez Canas and Rayana Gooden; Copiague Middle School: Jayden Risch, Joseph Risch and Eliud Bonilla.
Three Copiague Middle School eighthgrade students were presented with certificates and prizes for their essay contest entries. The contest is in its third year and essays are focused on religious freedom. Paulo Gonzalez was the first-place winner. Diana Carbajal placed second and Ari Chervony was named the third-place winner.

For the Love of Language Copiague School District’s foreign language department is thriving thanks to classes structures that are allowing students to reach their full potential as language learners. Beginning in seventh grade, students have the option to take Spanish or Italian as a foreign language. According to Michelle Passeggiata, director of ENL and world languages, students are engaged in real-world learning geared toward college and career
readiness. “The goal is for these students to be able to function using these languages in a real setting,” she said. Native language speakers and heritage speakers, those who understand the language but do not necessarily read or write it, are put in the same classroom setting. Together, they hone their reading and writing skills. The Advanced Placement Spanish class, for example, uses speaking/interpersonal communication. The class
is designed to develop a high level of Spanish vocabulary. Students have debates, and lessons are focused on social themes and world issues. In the World Affairs in Foreign Films class, students explore different foreign films and learn about the history of the particular country. They study social issues, languages and holidays and then participate in related cultural activities.

Does anything else even need to be said? Animals bring us so much joy, unconditional love, centeredness and clarity. Growing up, my parents were “not animal people” as they would often remind me at the mere mention of wanting a dog. I never experienced the joy and responsibility of having a pet when I was growing up. As a result, it just wasn’t on my radar as a kid, or even in my early twenties. At the age of twenty-nine, I found myself newly single, living in New York City and yearning for something or someone to care for other than myself. Without overthinking it, I adopted a two month old Shih Ztu and brought him home. With no idea of how to take care of a dog, I stumbled into a pet shop where I was loaded down with puppy food, vitamins, wee wee pads, a bed, a brush, food/water bowls and just about every other accoutrement you can think of. I can remember the first time I let this pup run loose in my tiny studio apartment. He was a ball of energy; a little white pouf ball of love as he snuggled up close in my
lap. I named him Francis Albert after Frank Sinatra, of course, which later incarnated to Frankie. Frankie was my first official family member. Not the family I was born into, but the family I would create on my own. He was there before my marriage and before my son. At one point in time, it was just me and Frankieboy. When my son was born, we hemmed and hawed about how Frankie may react to a new baby in the house. Would he behave? Would we have to worry? From the moment we brought our son home from the hospital, Frankie took on the role of pseudo-nanny (yes, like in Peter Pan); watching over the crib, alerting us when the baby was crying, and gently laying down next to our newborn son when he took his naps. It was astonishing; even more so, since Frankie-boy was not exactly known for exemplary behavior. In fact, he flunked out of dog obedience school. True story. As my son grew, it was so much fun to watch the two of them play together and bond. Rolling in the grass, playing ball or fetch, and
running around the house or the yard. It would always bring a smile to my face. Now, at fourteen, Frankie is getting on in years as my son is getting stronger and stronger and hitting his stride. I know there will come a time when Frankie is no longer with us, and it is hard to imagine. We still keep him running for exercise and we love him up as much as we can. I will always be grateful to him for teaching me how to care for another living being back when it was just me and him. These days, there is another dog in the fold, our Pitbull mix, Boris. To see this little Shih Ztu and large Pitbull get on together is a riot. They vacillate between rivalry and playfulness. Add my two favorite horses, Kingston in Melville, New York, and Lucky the beautiful Arabian, in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, into the mix and I just can’t imagine a life without animals around me. I am so glad that my son is growing up experiencing the joy that animals bring.

If you work or volunteer at a shelter and have a special dog that you believe would be a good match for a Veteran in need, you can submit a short video and biography of the dog to Paws of War through their website! They will then consider your rescued dog for their program once they have received all the information you can provide. All dogs that will be considered must be rescued/ shelter dogs, social, healthy, eager to please, good with other dogs and good with people.
You can also donate to Paws of War to help them carry out their mission. Individuals can donate on their website or by mail. There is truly no donation amount that is too small. They would not be able to carry out their mission of helping both ends of the leash without the generosity of their supporters. All donations are taxdeductible.
This organization relies heavily on devoted volunteers to continue providing their services. With such a small staff, Paws of War depends on the generosity of volunteers to support their fundraising efforts, to provide support to veterans and to help out with their dogs. Paws of War is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that trains and places shelter dogs to serve and provide independence to our U.S. military Veterans who suffer from the emotional effects of war. In turn, each V e t e r a n can experience the therapeutic and unconditional love that only a companion animal can bring! Since 2014, Paws of War has supported over 100 Veterans with service dogs rescued from kill shelters.
